Two assailants attempted to break down the door to the Priscilla Avenue residence early Sunday and apparently shot the victim when he came to investigate, according to Lieutenant Jack Fitzpatrick, commander of the Suffolk County Homicide Squad.
Lt. Fitzpatrick, who had been at the scene on Sunday morning, wouldn’t discuss a possible motive. He said there were several people inside the house—he would not say how many, or if all the occupants lived there—and they were awakened “by the sound of a door being broken down … A scuffle with two assailants led to the shooting of the victim.” An occupant of the house called 911, and when police arrived, Demitri Hampton, 21, was found lying just inside the front door of the residence, with a gunshot wound to the chest.
A Flanders man was killed early Sunday morning by armed men who broke into his home and shot him, Suffolk County Police said.
Demitri Hampton, 21, was found in his Priscilla Avenue home with a gunshot wound to his chest by Southampton Town Police responding to a 911 call reporting that armed men had broken into the house and shot a man. He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead.
The crime occurred about 3:15 a.m.
Gregarious and beloved Riverhead High School graduate Demitri Hampton had been living with extended family in Flanders when he was shot and killed early Sunday by “at least two” masked men who had broken into the home, Suffolk police said.
