A property caretaker fatally shot a suspected burglar during a shootout early Thursday morning in north Harris County.
The shooting happened about 1 a.m. at 2128 Aldine Bender near Aldine Westfield, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the caretaker called 911 and said a suspect at the been shot. When deputies arrived, the caretaker told them he had heard glass breaking and then saw two men breaking into a mobile home on the property.
When the suspects saw the caretaker, deputies said, they ran away. But one of them dropped a pistol as they fled. The caretaker picked up the gun. That’s when the suspects turned around and at least one of them opened fire on the caretaker.
Deputies said the caretaker returned gunfire, fatally wounding one of the suspects. The wounded man died at the scene. The suspect left. It was unclear if he had been wounded. The caretaker was not hurt.
