Donald Gist, the brother-in-law of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, was shot and killed Friday afternoon, according to a statement from Benjamin’s spokesman.
Gist was also the brother of Fifth Circuit Court Judge DeAndrea Benjamin.
The preliminary investigation indicates the shooting wasn’t a random act of violence, as the shooter and the male victim appear to have known each other, Charlotte police said.
Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene, police said.
The shooting happened at about 1:15 p.m., and outbound Beatties Ford Road at LaSalle Street was temporarily closed, police said.
