Tempe police arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault on Sunday in connection with a fatal shooting during an apartment party, officials said.

Daniel Taylor is accused of firing multiple rounds at about 2a.m. Sunday in the patio area of a party in the 800 block of South River Drive, according to Sgt. Michael Pooley, a Tempe Police Department spokesman.

The shots killed Jeff Ward, 28, and sent a female guest at the party to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Pooley said.

Taylor had arrived at the party uninvited and was asked to leave, Pooley said.

A Tempe man who fired a gun into a house party late last year was sentenced to 31 years in prison Friday for murdering one person and wounding another.

Daniel Cody Taylor, 19, was sentenced in Maricopa County Superior Court by Judge Michael Kemp to 22 years for second-degree murder in the death of Jeff Ward and nine years for aggravated assault for shooting and wounding a woman at the party.

Tempe police said Taylor crashed a party Dec. 7 at an apartment complex near University Drive and Price Road but was told to leave because he was not dressed appropriately. After returning to the party in a different outfit, Taylor was informed that it was a private party and was asked to leave again.

Taylor came back the next morning and fired into the unit’s front patio, police said, killing Ward and wounding the woman.
