A man has died in a shooting incident that occurred Tuesday evening in the area of CC Highway about seven miles west of West Plains. Howell County Coroner Tim Cherry identifies him as Brock Powell, 37.
The Howell County Sheriff’s Department is not releasing details at this time, but a report from the sheriff’s department shows that deputies were dispatched to 8489 CR 6890 at 8:35 p.m. “in reference to reports of a gunshot victim.” Officer Derek Hughston wrote, “Upon arrival one male subject was located within the residence that was deceased.”
Cherry said an autopsy to determine the official cause of death is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Cox South in Springfield. He said Powell, 37, of 8489 CR 6890 suffered at least one gunshot wound.
Howell County Sheriff Mike Shannon said no one is in custody in connection with the shooting and that the matter is under investigation. Asked if there is reason to believe that others are in danger, Shannon said at this time he does not believe there is cause for concern regarding the safety of the general public.
A fight at a home on Tuesday night led to a fatal shooting outside West Plains. Now investigators are trying to determine if it was a justifiable homicide.
An incident report from the Howell County Sheriff’s Department says the shooting was at the home of Marty Fox, 8409 County Road 6890. Fox called 9-1-1 about 8:30 p.m. to report he’d shot Brock Powell.
Fox told deputies that Powell showed up and at his home and started stabbing Fox. The incident report says, “As a result of the altercation, Powell suffered a fatal gunshot wound.”
