A west Valley family was rocked by tragedy when a 52-year-old man shot his significant other and then turned the gun on himself Wednesday morning.
The victim’s brother and one of the couple’s adult children were in the house near Camelback Road and 75th Avenue at the time of the murder-suicide, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
Thompson said Manuel Olivas, 52, got in a fight with his common law wife of nearly 30 years, Maryann Valenzuela Fernandez in a bedroom of the home about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Fernandez called to her brother for help. He ran to the bedroom and forced the locked door open as Olivas shot Fernandez, according to police.
Olivas allegedly threatened her brother with the gun and then shot himself. Both Olivas and Fernandez died at the home.
