A domestic disturbance in Farmington between a father and his adult son ended with the 43-year-old son shot and killed by police.

The victim is identified as Gregory Bendas, of 3 Butternut Dr., which is where the shooting took place.

Officers were called about 10:45 p.m. Thursday to the Butternut Drive home. They say when they got there the son confronted them in the street with a gun. An officer shot him and he died at the scene.

The father has not been identified and it’s not clear why he was at his son’s home.

The stepfather didn’t just lose his stepson that day. He also lost his wife, Bendas’ mother, after she passed away in Simsbury at McLean’s on Dec. 12, according to an obituary published in The New Britain Herald. The obituary calls him her “soulmate” and states that the two were married in 1980. The obituary also acknowledges that “her loving son,” Bendas, “passed away unexpectedly on the same day as his mom.”
