EAST CHICAGO | A 40-year-old East Chicago man who served time for a murder he committed in the city in the 1990s was shot and killed there early Friday.
James Currie, of the 3400 block of Guthrie Street, was pronounced dead at 6 a.m. Friday, the Lake County coroner’s office said.
The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds suffered in a homicide.
The fatal shooting occurred in the 3500 block of Block Avenue.
Lt. Marguerite Wilder, of the East Chicago Police Department, said Currie and his girlfriend were returning home from a night out around 3 a.m. when two men approached and started shooting.
Wilder said the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot location system alerted them to the gunfire as did numerous calls from residents.
Currie was fatally wounded. His girlfriend was not injured, Wilder said.
