PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Pawtucket police have arrested a 20-year old man in Lewiston, Maine, for the Christmas Eve murder of Ryan Almeida, who was gunned down at the Galego Court housing complex.
The suspect, Daquan Watts, was arraigned on a charge of first-degree murder and conspiracy Thursday morning in Providence District Court. He did not enter a plea, as is customary at District Court arraignments.
According to a Pawtucket police affidavit signed by Detective Donti Rosciti, Almeida was fatally shot at 4:52 a.m. outside an apartment in the housing project. Rescue and police found him lying on the ground, and he was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.
Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that Daquan Watts, age 20, with a last known address of 26 Hollis Street, Providence, pleaded guilty today before Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause to first degree murder, discharge of a firearm death resulting, conspiracy to commit murder and carrying a pistol without a license.
Sentencing is scheduled for January 7, 2015.
Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that on December 24, 2013, Watts and Jose Lopez shot Ryan Almeida outside of an apartment complex in Pawtucket. Almeida died as a result of his injuries.
Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced today that a Providence County Superior Court jury found Jose “Gio” Lopez (age 18), with a last known address of 28 Joslin Street, Providence, guilty of the December 24, 2013 murder of Ryan Almeida. The jury found Lopez guilty of murder, discharging a firearm while in the commission of a crime of violence and conspiracy. Lopez was found not guilty of carrying a firearm without a license. The verdict was returned after approximately three hours of deliberations after a 12-day trial before Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause.
