A 52-year-old man died after a mishap with a flare gun on Christmas Day in his back yard at a home in Chambers County.

John David Cook Jr. died in the incident, which happened about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Oaks Grande Drive in the Baytown area, according to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Cook’s wife told investigators she woke up to her husband’s screams in the living room. His hands were severely injured and he had an open wound in his chest.

Deputies said Cook was flown by LIfeFlight medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann-The Texas Medical Center, where he later died.

Deputies said investigators later determined Cook had been working with a 37 mm flare device/gun on the patio. The expended flare casing was found in the grass near the porch.
