MANSFIELD — The 16-year-old boy who died after a Christmas Day shootout with Grand Prairie police was driving a stolen car and using a stolen gun, officials said Thursday.

Mansfield Lake Ridge High School student Peyton Cole Barbour — described by friends as cheerful and beloved — kicked off the manhunt after fleeing when an officer tried to pull him over early Wednesday morning.

Grand Prairie police spokesman Mark Beseda said the officer tried to initiate the stop near North Grand Peninsula Drive and England Parkway because it was around 4:30 a.m. and the vehicle seemed suspicious.

“Whatever [Barbour] was doing caught the officer’s attention, and that’s when they pulled up to him and he just took off,” Beseda said.

Beseda said the officer making the stop wasn’t aware Barbour was driving a stolen 1997 Honda, though he said that may explain why the teenager fled.

The brief chase ended when Barbour abandoned the car in the middle of a field and shot at the officer, who fired back. Neither was wounded, and Barbour escaped into a wooded area.

About 2 p.m., Barbour started shooting at officers again while cornered near East Seeton Road. He injured two officers before authorities surrounded and shot him.

Barbour was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he died. The two officers are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Police on Thursday were still trying to determine how Barbour obtained a Glock 9-mm pistol. The gun had been reported stolen in a home burglary.

Barbour fled on foot and shot at a pursuing officer, who returned fire. The teenager disappeared into the woods. Grand Prairie police set up a perimeter and searched the area for hours. About 2:00 p.m., officers found Barbour about a mile from the original traffic stop.
