Two law enforcement officers placed on administrative leave with pay while the State Bureau of Investigation investigates a fatal shooting in Alleghany County on Dec. 26 were identified on Monday.
They are Sparta Police Officer Tyler Choate and Alleghany Sheriff’s Department Deputy Steve Carrier. Names of the two officers weren’t given when the Alleghany Sheriff’s Department first shared details on the incident about 1 p.m. Dec. 27.
According to an Alleghany Sheriff’s Department press release, officers identified themselves when they responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the home of Mitchell Allen Street, 51, of Arnies Lane, and ordered Street to put down the high-powered rifle he was holding.
The release said officers shot Street when he refused to put the gun down and pointed it at them.
The news release didn’t say which officer or officers shot Street, where he was shot or how many times. The incident occurred about 7 p.m.
