New Haven police are investigating a homicide early Saturday morning.
According to police, 18-year-old Javier Martinez of New Haven was shot and killed near the intersection of Hemmingway Avenue and Russell Street.
Officers were called to the scene at 12:48 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls reporting shots in the area and a person lying in the roadway.
NEW HAVEN >> Javier Martinez, 18, had attended a renowned charter high school, interned in nationally competitive programs and was about a week away from purchasing a car with money he had earned at his job.
Colleges had reached out to him, asking that the high-achieving student apply.
By all accounts of family, friends and educators, he was a bright, hard-working and empathetic young man with a love for the environment and a desire to make the world a better place.
Martinez’s life was cut short Dec. 28 when he was shot multiple times. His body was found in the area of Hemingway Avenue and Russell Street shortly before 1 a.m.
