Killed – Jose Mendoza (Berwyn, IL)

Jose Mendoza1

Three suburban men were ordered held today after they were charged with committing a botched New Year’s Eve robbery that ended in the death of a Berwyn man.

Eddie Garcia, Salvador Alvarado and Jonathan Ivory each face first-degree murder and attempted robbery charges for the shooting death of 20-year-old Jose Mendoza, Assistant State’s Attorney Brooke Shupe said Sunday.

Ivory, 24, of Westchester, picked up Alvarado and Garcia on Dec. 31, she said.

The three smoked marijuana and talked about doing a robbery, according to Shupe.

Ivory drove the trio to the 2100 block of South Oak Park Avenue, near the Millennium Cutz barbershop, and dropped Garcia off, she said.

Garcia, 21, of Alsip, waited in a back alley for Mendoza, Shupe said, and attempted to rob him when he walked up at about 9:40 p.m.

A struggle, ensued, and Garcia shot Mendoza once in the chest, she said. He got no cash from Mendoza.

Mendoza, of the 2600 block of South East Avenue in Berwyn, was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m. on Dec. 31, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Garcia fled to the getaway car after the shooting, but dropped his phone, the handgun’s clip and one of his shoes in the process, all of which were recovered by police, Shupe said.

Killed – Fernando Winters (Milwaukee, WI)

male

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) – A Milwaukee father and son are charged in the murder of a man who refused to hand over $50 in a New Year’s Eve robbery attempt.

45-year-old Eric Hill was being held under a quarter-million dollar bond on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and attempted armed robbery. 25-year-old Deonte Hill is charged with felony murder, bail jumping, and illegally possessing a gun as a convicted felon. He’s under a $150,000 bond.

According to prosecutors, both Hills and 36-year-old Fernando Winters were at a northwest side hotel to collect money that a woman owed them. Eric Hill then allegedly tried robbing Winters of his $50 just outside the hotel. Prosecutors said Hill ended up shooting Winters twice, and never got his money.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — He’s one of two people (a father and son) charged in connection with the final homicide of 2013, and now, he’s been sentenced in the case against him.

46-year-old Eric Hill faced two felony charges in the case: first degree intentional homicide and armed robbery.

Eric Hill on Thursday, October 9th was sentenced to life in prison on the first degree intentional homicide (with credit for 275 days served). He will be eligible for extended supervision after 32 years (in 2046).

On the armed robbery charge, Eric Hill was sentenced to 12 years in prison and seven years of extended supervision, to be served concurrently.

A criminal complaint filed against these two says police were dispatched to the area of 72nd and W. Appleton Avenue on the evening of December 31st. There, they spoke with Fernando Winters, who told them he had been shot in the chest by someone he had never seen before following an attempted robbery as he was walking home.

Mass Shooting – Killed – Male Teen – David Carpenter-Kohler (Barberton, OH)

Ashley Carpenter2

Two men have been arrested in connection with the New Year’s Eve shooting deaths of a Barberton father and his two teenage children.

Michael Deon Hendon, 22, and Eric Donta Hendon, 30, both of Akron, were arrested Friday on three counts each of aggravated murder.

Additional charges, including a potential death penalty specification indictment, will be considered when the case is reviewed later this month by a Summit County grand jury.

The arrests came on the same day that John Kohler, the Barberton father whose home was targeted by armed robbers on New Year’s Eve, died of apparent gunshot wounds.

He was shot in the home invasion burglary that also claimed the life of his 18-year-old stepdaughter, Ashley Carpenter, and his son, David Kohler Carpenter, 14.

Kohler’s girlfriend, Ronda Blankenship, 38, survived the shooting and is recovering at an area hospital.

Autopsies this week showed that Ashley died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Her brother, David, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He also suffered defensive wounds to his arms, reports show. They were found together in a back bedroom.

The haunting 911 call from a Barberton woman paints a picture of the aftermath of a shooting New Year’s Eve that left her and her boyfriend wounded and his two teenage children dead.

“Help, help,” a wounded Ronda Blankenship pleads to a dispatcher in the conversation released Thursday by Southwest Summit Communications. “I’m bleeding everywhere … my boyfriend is here. I have two kids here … Help, help, help. Oh God.”

The teens were visiting their father, John Kohler, 42, at his 7th Street Northeast home on New Year’s Eve.

His girlfriend, Rhonda Blankenship, 38, was also shot, but survived.

A call for help was made around 6:50 p.m.

AKRON, Ohio — One of two brothers accused of killing three people and shooting a fourth during a home invasion robbery in Barberton is mentally unfit for the death penalty, a judge ruled on Monday.

Michael Hendon, 23, of Akron, still faces aggravated murder charges in the Dec. 31, 2013 attack. Summit County Judge Amy Corrigal Jones ruled that Hendon mental disabilities barred him from being executed under state and federal laws.

Hendon is scheduled for a court hearing Tuesday to determine how the case will proceed.

Hendon and his brother, Eric Hendon, 32, are accused of breaking into a 7th Street S.W. home in order to steal drugs and money, according to police.

Killed – Duraid Aziz Lossia (Farmington Hills, MI)

Duraid Aziz Lossia

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WXYZ) – Farmington Hills Police are investigating the murder of a party store owner in Farmington Hills.

It’s happened at Tom’s Party Store on Inkster Road, just north of 8 Mile.

Police were called to the scene about 12:30 pm Saturday. Witnesses had reported an armed robbery where the victim had been shot.

As an officer approached the scene he was flagged down by a witness who said the robbery and shooting occurred at the party store.

Once at the scene a witness told police he was walking into the party store at the same time that an African American man was walking out. The witness said that once he was inside the store he saw that the clerk had been shot.

Farmington Hills party store owner Duraid Lossia let customers who were short on cash have items and pay for them later and gave people down on their luck odd jobs to help them out.

Those are the kinds of good deeds many recalled during a candlelight vigil held in front of his store Sunday night, as police continue to search for his killer. Those who knew him said the 59-year-old Lossia loved helping people out.

Dozens of people showed up in the light rain to remember the man they knew as Dave. Some had known him for decades and held candles, told stories, cried, hugged or sang songs with others.

Killed – Mario Edward Garnett (Phoenix, AZ)

Mario Edward Garnett1

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com)–A nationwide manhunt ended Saturday when a bank robber, accused of shooting and killing a police officer in Tupelo, Mississippi, was killed during a shootout with police in Arizona.

Investigators say the suspect killed in Phoenix is the same man who shot and killed Sgt. Gale Stauffer Monday. Officer Joseph Maher was also injured in that shooting. The suspect was also caught on camera earlier Monday morning trying to rob a bank in Atlanta, GA.

“All of us hope that the conclusion of this investigation will bring some measure of comfort and peace,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge, Daniel McMullen.

In Tupelo, Mississippi, the FBI along with state and local law enforcement held a media conference, and Beth Stauffer, the widow of Officer Gale Stauffer, also made a statement thanking law enforcement for their work and the nation for their prayers and support.

The man suspected in a spree of bank robberies and the killing of a police officer in Tupelo, Miss., was sentenced in 2010 for threatening to kill President Obama and his predecessors, a federal law enforcement official told ABC News.

Authorities today identified the suspect, who was killed Saturday in a shootout with police outside a Phoenix, Ariz., bank, as Mario Edward Garnett, 40.

An indictment said that in August 2010 Garnett allegedly posted a message to the White House website, saying among other things: “if you order a strike on Iran, I’m going to come up there and blow your brains out on national TV. You scheming hypocrite … Netanyahu is a dead man. Damn Israel.”

Six days later, he allegedly posted another message, saying: “I’m going to settle some scores on behalf of Israel and America’s victims on behalf of those they continue to oppress. I’ll kill president and farmer alike. You are either worth something or you are chaff.”

Garnett was sentenced in June 2011 to eight months behind bars and three years supervised release for the threats against the president.

According to court documents, he was held for a month after his sentencing, but on July 26, 2011, he was let out on supervised released.

He was supposed to participate in a “program of mental health aftercare,” but he violated the conditions of supervised released, saying during a mental health session on Sept. 21, 2011, that his probation officer should be “put to death,” according to the document.

He repeatedly “rants and makes threats,” court documents said at the time.

A federal judge placed Garnett on home confinement with GPS monitoring for 120 days.

But in October 2011, a federal judge sentenced Garnett to 24 months in prison for violating his supervised release, and the judge said he “recommends a facility to evaluate and address the defendant’s mental health.”

Double Shooting – Killed – Xavier Arnold (Atlanta, GA)

Xavier Arnold

On Thursday night, Arnold, his girlfriend and another friend were on a bike trail in the Kirkwood community when shots were fired during the attempted robbery, Atlanta police said. The trio had planned to take pictures of graffiti on the trail when they were approached by two men, according to police.

Xavier Arnold, a 21-year-old U.S. Army soldier shot in the head Dec. 26, 2013, during an apparent robbery attempt, died, police said.

The suspects shot Arnold in the head and his friend in the leg as Arnold’s girlfriend watched, police said. Both men were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, but Arnold did not survive his injuries.

A female companion who was walking with the two men on a nearby trail, was not injured in the 5:30 p.m. incident, Sgt. Greg Lyon, an Atlanta Police Department spokesman, said.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A jury has found both defendants guilty in the trial of a then 14-year-old and 20-year-old accused of murdering an Army reservist.

Prosecutors said Xavier Arnold was shot and killed while walking along a bike trail in Kirkwood in 2013.

Wainwright was 14 and Qutravius Palmer was 20 when they attempted to rob Arnold, his girlfriend, Xenia Aims, and friend Ibrahim Sanusi.

When Arnold resisted, Wainwright shot him in the head and his friend in the leg.

A jury found both men guilty on 23 of the 24 counts they faced.

Wainwright and Palmer were sentenced Tuesday morning to three life sentences plus 15 years.
Aims testified in the trial, describing the day Arnold was killed.

Aims said Wainwright shot Arnold in the head and took off, with Palmer right behind him.

Killed – Tyler Gurien (Memphis, TN)

male

(WMC-TV) – Investigators arrested three suspects in a Thursday afternoon murder in the Coro Lake area, according to court records.

Mark Whitely, 24 , was booked Friday. He admitted he helped plan and execute a robbery at a house in which Tyler Gurien was shot and killed by another co-defendant.

Jonathan Bolden, 28, was arrested first, and Ryan Winston, 21, was also arrested.

All three suspects are charged with first-degree murder in perpetration of a robbery.

Police say Bolden, Whitely, and one other people went to Gurien’s house intending to rob him. While there, one of the individuals pulled out a shotgun and shot Gurien. Police say Bolden admitted his participation in the plan to rob Gurien.

Bolden is scheduled to be in court Monday morning.

Memphis police were called to the house Thursday afternoon after neighbors reportedly found a man’s body in a blood-covered basement.

According to police, this latest trouble began about 2 p.m. on Dec. 26 in the 4800 block of East Shore. Responding officers found Gurien in a puddle of blood in the basement of that house. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators determined that Whitely, Winston and Bolden were responsible for robbing Gurien, then killing him with a shotgun, police said. All three remain jailed.

Killed – James Torres (Bronx, NY)

James Torres1

Cops shot and killed an ex-con with a lengthy rap sheet Thursday morning in the Bronx after chasing him down for a gunpoint robbery at an ATM, cops and police sources said.

James Torres, 44, was killed in front of an apartment building on Davidson Ave. in Morris Heights around 4:04 a.m. after a scuffle with several cops, police said.

Torres had just stolen an iPhone and wallet from a 24-year-old man who was in a Chase Bank ATM vestibule on W. Burnside Ave., cops said.

The robbery victim quickly went outside and flagged down a marked police car.

The officers then drove around with the victim until he spotted Torres, broadcasting the wanted man’s description over the radio, a cops and a police source said.

One of the cops exited the patrol car and chased the robber on foot as Torres ran a Davidson Ave. building about a block away, the source said.

Several cops joined the chase as Torres, who entered a small enclosed area outside the building’s main entrance, began banging on the door, the source said.

A fight ensued between Torres and the cops. One of the cops fired his gun, striking Torres twice in the chest, cops said.

Torres was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died at 4:46 a.m. The cops were treated for tinnitus.

Killed – Pregnant Teen – Eva Casara (Chicago, IL)

Eva Casara2

CHICAGO – A third suspect in the Christmas Day murder of a pregnant Chicago teen has been charged after surrendering Monday, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Darius D. Marshall, 19, of Dolton, Ill., is due in court Thursday to face charges of murder and attempted armed robbery. His attorney, Stuart Goldberg, told the Sun-Times his client will plead not guilty.

Marshall turned himself in after his brothers, a 16-year-old boy and 21-year-old Diante Coakley, were charged with the murder of Eva Casara, 17, over the weekend. Prosecutors say Casara was shot in the back of the head during a botched robbery in which she was allegedly participating Dec. 25. She was reportedly 26 weeks pregnant with the child of the 16-year-old suspect, who was her boyfriend.

Prosecutors have said Casara plotted with her boyfriend, his brother Coakley and another unnamed brother to commit a robbery, reports the Sun-Times. They believe Coakley fired the fatal shot, though they say Casara wasn’t the intended target.

Casara was shot in the back of the head on Wednesday. Her body was found in a residential area in Dolton around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, but police believe the shooting occurred somewhere else. Casara was taken to the hospital, where doctors saved her baby but she died.

“We believe we found the actual location where this young lady was shot at,” Dolton Police Chief John Franklin said. “It was suspected (Wednesday) night that she was not actually shot at 1102, that she was placed there. And members of the Crime Task Force have found some shell casings in the 15200 South Dorchester where we believe the actual shooting did occur there.”

A man who walked in on a home invasion robbery at his residence fought with the intruder, took the gun away and shot and killed his attacker, Shreveport police said. The intended victim was shot in the leg before he got the gun away from his attacker, police said. His wounds were not life threatening, police said. Police today were searching for a second suspect, who fled after the robbery went awry. The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. at a house in the 5700 block of Sussex Street. Double Shooting – Killed – Police Officer – Kevin Gale Stauffer, Jr. (Tupelo, MS)

Kevin Gale Stauffer, Jr.

(Tupelo, MS) A Tupelo police officer has died and a second is in critical condition after a shooting Monday afternoon.

The officers were responding to a robbery at BancorpSouth’s Gloster Creek Village branch when they were shot.

The bank robbery call came in at about 3:15 p.m.

The two officers responded and confronted the suspects on south Gloster Street.

The FBI has expanded the search for the alleged bank robber who shot and killed a Tupelo, Miss., police officer two days before Christmas.

A nationwide dragnet is now in place for the suspected killer of officer Gale Stauffer, 38, who was gunned down Monday in a confrontation with bank robbers as the suspects made their getaway. Another officer, Joseph Maher, 26, was critically wounded in the incident.

UPDATE 5:36 pm from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Phoenix police identified the suspect as Mario Edward Garnett, 40, who is from the Midwest and served four years in the U.S. Army.

Law enforcement authorities believe the bank robber who shot two police officers in Tupelo, Miss. last week, killing one, is the same man later killed in another attempted bank robbery in Phoenix, Ariz., Saturday.

“We believe that this suspect is the same individual who is responsible for the attempted bank robbery in Atlanta, the robbery of the BancorpSouth in Tupelo, the shooting of Officer Joseph Maher, and the murder of Officer Gale Stauffer,” the Jackson, Miss., FBI bureau said in a statement late Saturday.

During the suspect’s getaway in Mississippi Monday, he was confronted at a railroad crossing by Officers Stauffer and Maher. Both were shot at close range. Stauffer, an Iraq War veteran of the Louisiana Army National Guard who had served with the Tupelo Police Department for eight years, died. Maher remains in serious condition.

Double Shooting – Killed – Michael Clower (Red Rock, AZ)

male

On Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at 6:25 a.m. an armed robbery occurred at the “M Passion Adult Boutique” in Picacho Peak. According to a Pinal County Sherriff’s office press release, two armed suspects entered the business and tied up the female employee in a back room. The female was able to escape and called 9-1-1 as the suspects were running out the back door. The safe from the business was taken by the suspects.

An “attempt to locate” was broadcasted to law enforcement agencies.

At 6:29 a.m. a PCSO deputy located an Audi passenger car in the area of the reported robbery leaving at a high rate of speed westbound on Interstate-10. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle by using his emergency lights and siren. The vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated in which the Audi reached speeds in excess of 120 mph.

At 6:37 a.m. the suspect vehicle exited onto northbound Highway 87. The suspect vehicle pulled into a dirt field and then the suspect vehicle and deputy’s vehicle collided.

Initial information is the two armed suspects exited the vehicle and shot at the deputy. The deputy returned fire and shot both suspects. One suspect died at the scene and the other suspect who was shot in the arm and leg attempted to run. The deputy was able to catch him and attempted to arrest him yet the suspect fought with him.

Eventually the suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital to be treated for his gunshot wounds.

The suspects, who authorities later identified as 32-year-old Michael Clower and 23-year-old Adam Chavez, exited the damaged vehicle and began firing at the officer. The deputy returned fire, killing Clower and striking Chavez in the arm and leg, according to a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Babeu said Chavez fought and struggled with the deputy during the arrest.

The deputy, who is a seven year veteran and member of the SWAT and Search and Rescue teams, appeared to have escaped the head-on collision without injuries, Babeu said.

Chavez was hospitalized but his condition was not available Monday evening.

Double Shooting – Wounded – Man (Red Rock, AZ)

Killed – Gonzalo Perez Garcia-Garcia (Highland Park, CA)

Gonzalo Perez Garcia-Garcia

Detectives sought the public’s help Tuesday in providing any information on possible suspects in the shooting death in Highland Park.

38-year-old Gonzalo Perez was killed after the shooting on Sunday night around 10:25 p.m. at a 7-11 convenience store located in the 5100 block of North Figueroa Street, according to LAPD Northeast Homicide Detectives.

When the officers arrived, they found Perez lying on the floor with what appeared to be a gunshot wound, investigators said.

Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics responded to the location and transported the victim to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment, according to authorities. Despite life-saving efforts, Perez died as a result of his injuries a short time later.

Investigators said Perez was working in the convenience store as suspects entered the location posing as customers. After the victim walked to the register to assist the suspects, the first suspect jumped over the counter and produced a handgun demanding money from the cash register, according to police.

On Wednesday, a 19-year-old Compton man was charged with special circumstance murder during a robbery and multiple other counts related to previous alleged robberies. Rasheen Childs, who has been on probation for two prior convictions, was due to be arraigned Jan. 21.

Killed – Jamey Spurlock (Albany, GA)

Jamey Spurlock1

Corporal Terrance Bryant and the Albany Police Department held a news conference Friday afternoon to ask for the public’s help in finding who is responsible for the death of 34-year-old Jamey Spurlock.

Spurlock was shot and killed Sunday, Dec. 22 around 8:30 p.m. in East Albany. Spurlock and his son had just left Spurlock’s fiancé’s house when he realized he had a flat tire on Silica Drive.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – The US Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force (FRFTF) has arrested an Albany, Georgia most wanted homicide suspect.

18-year old Demonta Price of Albany has been arrested on charges of first degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and violation of parole on an original conviction of armed robbery.

Authorities were looking for price after investigators say they determined that Price and his two brothers, 23-year old Demetrice Price and 20-year old Kovarious Price were involved in the brutal murder and robbery of Jamey Spurlock.

Albany Police Department investigators say on the night of December 22, 2013, 35-year old Jamey Spurlock was changing a tire on Silica Road when Price and his two brothers confronted Spurlock, shot him and killed him during a robbery. Spurlock had 3 children and a fiancé.

Both Demetrice and Kovarious Price are currently in custody in Albany, GA charged with Murder and Robbery. Demonta Price was named one of Albany’s Most Wanted and members of the US Marshals began searching for Price on January 6, 2014.

Killed – Alexis Hunter (Selma, AL)

Alexis Hunter1

During the hearing, Selma Police Department Sgt. Kendall Thomas described the scene as he arrived at the corner of Franklin Street and Memorial Avenue Saturday night around 10 p.m. Thomas said Alexis Hunter was lying on the curb, with her legs on Franklin Avenue and her torso on the grass.

“When I arrived, she was bleeding profusely from the head and was unconscious and unresponsive,” he said.

Alexis Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the head at close range by Jones, Thomas testified. Thomas testified in Monday’s hearing that he connected Jones as the shooter through multiple interviews with witnesses.

The incident began when a group of young men, including Larry Hunter and Jones, were talking near the intersection of Franklin Street and Memorial Avenue.

Larry Hunter told police Jones said, “I got to get this money. I’m broke. I need some money. The next person that comes through I got to get it,” according to Thomas.

A group of three teenage girls, including Alexis Hunter, walked past Selma High School on Franklin and were confronted by Jones, Thomas said.

Witness accounts vary on the exact details of the conversation between Jones and the girls, but all accounts confirm Jones reportedly pulled a gun from his waistband and fired one shot, striking Alexis Hunter in the head after asking for her phone.

The two remaining girls scattered after the gunshot, but were chased by the suspects and asked to hand over their phones. Both girls returned home.

Sunday will mark a year since 18-year-old Selma High student Alexis Hunter was shot and killed near her school, leaving her mother with a pain that’s hard to describe.

Since Joann Hunter learned that a Selma teen allegedly killed her daughter at the corner of Franklin Street and Memorial Avenue, she has tried to keep her daughter’s loving and kind spirit alive.

Murder suspects John Jones and Larry Hunter allegedly robbed a group of girls, including Alexis, for their cell phones during the incident on Dec. 21, 2013. The shooter was reportedly Larry.

Jones was indicted on capital murder at the time of the incident, and Larry received the same charge in early July.

The two are expected to appear in court for trial May 4, 2015.

Larry, who was 18 at the time of the incident, is facing either the death penalty or the life in jail without parole if convicted, District Attorney Michael Jackson said in July.

Because Jones was a minor at the time of the shooting, at 16 years old, he cannot face the death penalty, Jackson said.

Triple Shooting – Wounded – Man (Franklinton, LA)

male

FRANKLINTON, La. – Neighbors of a Franklinton woman who was found shot to death inside a burned-out trailer Friday morning say they are not surprised.

The victim’s son is now in custody, and two others were wounded after a quiet night on a Franklinton Street turned to mayhem.

“This is like too close,” said resident Nina Dillon. “This is in my mom’s backyard.”

Police say 20-year-old Christopher Dillon went down the street Thursday night and shot a neighbor in the arm as he tried to rob him.

Dillon then ran to the trailer he shared with his mother, 42-year-old Robin Dillon.

When he got back to the trailer, police rushed in, and Dillon emerged from a hallway carrying a gun. He fired at officer Chad Dorsett, striking him in the chest and the arm. The officer’s bulletproof vest protected him from serious injury.

Then the trailer caught fire, and as the flames raged, Dillon jumped out of a window, and was captured. After the fire, authorities went inside, and made a grisly discovery.

“When they entered, they found a body in the bed in the back bedroom,” said Washington Parish Chief Deputy Mike Haley.

Robin Dillon was dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities say the incident began around 10 p.m. Thursday night, when 20-year-old Christopher Dillon tried to rob his neighbor for cash, then shot him in the arm. That man is still recovering in a New Orleans hospital.

The second scene then started at the suspect’s home after he ran almost a football field away after the armed robbery and shooting down the street.

‘Police officers approached the residence, saw the door somewhat, not all the way closed, yelled for somebody to identify themselves, they went in and said they could smell gunpowder,’ said Louisiana State Police Master Trooper Greg Marchand, ‘They could see one hand and not the other, he said he was surrendering. As he made the corner of the hallway, he brandished a weapon, shot one time. It went through the trailer wall and hit an officer.’

Dillon was pulled from the burning home and arrested, but once the fire was out, the body of his mother, 44-year-old Robin Dillon, was discovered. The coroner’s office says she died from a single gunshot wound.

Franklinton Police say they had been called to the home several times for domestic issues between the mother and son. The Dillon’s family lives in Mississippi and Robin’s father told a neighbor she was his only child.

Killed – Police Officer – Cuauhtemoc Estrada (Bellwood, IL)

Cuauhtemoc Estrada1

Officials say they have multiple suspects in custody after a Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot and killed Friday night trying to stop an armed robbery in suburban Chicago.

Police and family say Cuauhtemoc Estrada was at a family holiday party at a Bellwood, Ill. VFW when he reportedly saw two men in ski masks trying to rob his daughter and her boyfriend at gunpoint in the parking lot around 7:30 p.m., the Tribune reports.

Estrada, 50, reached for his gun and was shot in the chest. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“He was an exceptional investigator, but an even better man who loved his family, his friends and his country,” Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said in a statement according to the Sun-Times. “Quite simply, he made this world a better place and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.”

Charges were filed early Monday against two suspects. Brandon Jackson and Gage Thornton, both 22, now face numerous counts, including first-degree murder charges. Police say they have good evidence against the two Bellwood men, but authorities would not share many details Monday. Prosecutors say Jackson was wearing a red hoodie and a ski mask at the time of the attack. Thornton allegedly wore a red jacket with blue sleeves.

Bellwood police say footprints in the snow led officers back to Jackson’s house. When the men were arrested — Jackson, who works at a moving company, was found with a black ski mask in the back pocket of his jeans. Police also found the distinctive jacket that Thornton, who works at a car wash, was allegedly wearing during the robbery. Detectives also say they recovered an empty gun box with cartridges missing.

Killed – Male Teen – Courtrell Jackson (Killeen, TX)

Courtrell Jackson

KILLEEN (December 26, 2013) Marcus Brown, 23, of Harker Heights, remained in the Bell County Jail Thursday charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver in connection with an incident in which a teenager was shot to death, according to online jail records.

His bond was set at $250,000.

The teenager, identified in an arrest warrant affidavit released Thursday as Courtrell Jackson, 15, died at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center after the shooting on Dec. 20.

Officers found him lying on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of Fox Creek Drive.

Jackson turned 15 on Dec. 8, the affidavit said.

Brown, who was arrested shortly after officers responded to the shooting call early in the evening on Dec. 20, told investigators he had agreed to sell marijuana to the teenager, the affidavit said.

Brown said he picked up Jackson and drove for a short period of time.

Then he said Jackson pulled a gun and attempted to rob him, according to the affidavit.

Jackson fired once and Brown, who had his own gun, fired back and hit the teenager, the affidavit said.

Jackson was able to escape from the vehicle after he was shot, but quickly collapsed on the sidewalk, police said.

Jackson was transported to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, where he was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke, according to a news release from the Killeen Police Department.

Officers responded to a call about a robbery and shooting around 2:00 a.m. at 105 Wesley St.

Captain Chris Atack said that when Carrboro Police arrived at the home, two people had sustained gunshot wounds.

David Lee Goodman, 27, of Durham, died on-scene, and the other person was transported to UNC Hospitals with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. Police have not released that person’s identity.

The brother of the injured man called police, saying that two intruders broke into the home, attempting to rob them, and that one of them shot his brother in the head, according to the 911 call. Atack confirmed the caller was the homeowner.

A Durham man shot and killed Dec. 20 at 105 Wesley St. in Carrboro was one of two attempting to rob the home at gunpoint.

Double Murder – Killed – Eric Davis (Chicago, IL)

Eric Davis1

CHICAGO (CBS) — Parishioners at St. Phillip Neri Church are mourning the death of a mentor and deacon.

Willie Cooper, 74, was found shot to death early this morning in the South Shore neighborhood.

Deacon Cooper was found in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds about 4:45 a.m. in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue, according to police news affairs.

Cooper worked at the Aries Bus Co., and was on his way to work, following his usual routine, according to his friend, Steve Herron.

He pulled up to pick up Herron, who also is Cooper’s co-worker.
That’s when Cooper was ambushed by a group of men and gunned down inside his car.

Herron told CBS 2’s Courtney Gousman that he was just about to walk out of his home and jump into the car when he heard gunshots.

In the most recent shooting, 74-year-old Willy Cooper, a deacon at St. Phillip Neri Church, was found fatally shot inside a vehicle in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue, CBS Chicago reports.

Tattooed across the throat of Mark A. Hall, one of two men accused of killing a deacon and a blues musician during botched robberies last December, is the phrase: “God 4 Gives I Don’t.”

On Sunday, it was Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois’ turn to be unforgiving. With a dismissive nod, Bourgeois ordered Hall held without bail as he awaits trial. His co-defendant, Devin Aldridge, was ordered held without bond on Saturday.

Hall and Aldridge, both 23, were charged with two counts each of first-degree murder for the early morning killings of deacon Willie Cooper and musician Eric “Guitar” Davis on Dec. 19, 2013, in the South Shore neighborhood, authorities said.

Cooper and Davis were shot to death within 40 minutes just blocks from each other, Assistant State’s Attorney Luz Toledo said in court.

In both cases, the men were in their vehicles waiting to pick up a friend, prosecutors said. Each tried to speed away to avoid getting robbed by Aldridge and Hall, prosecutors alleged. Instead, they both died in a hail of 9 mm bullets that were traced to the same handgun, according to prosecutors.

Cooper, 74, was shot at 4:44 a.m. in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue. Davis, 41, was sitting in his vehicle in the 6700 block of South East End about 5:20 a.m. when he was shot, police said.

Davis, of the 14200 block of South Eggleston in Riverdale, and Cooper, of the 6800 block of South Crandon, were dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Willie Cooper, 74, a retired CTA driver and deacon, was shot to death around 4:45 a.m., after he pulled up in the 7000 Block of South East End Avenue and was waiting to give a friend a ride to work.

Hall walked up to the drivers’ side. Aldridge walked up to the passengers’ side, and the two demanded money, Assistant State’s Attorney Luz Toledo said in court.

When Cooper began to drive away, Hall shot at him at least 10 times, striking him multiple times and killing him. The victims fled after Cooper crashed into a nearby fence and slumped over the wheel, Toledo said. Cooper suffered wounds to the shoulder, bicep, ear and elbow.

Around 5:20 a.m., in the 6700 block of South East End Avenue, the men approached Eric “Guitar” Davis, 43, who was also sitting in his parked car waiting to pick up a friend, when the men approached him on the driver’s side and demanded money.

When he tried to drive away, he was shot at multiple times and struck in the back, neck and his right inner palm, Toledo said in court. Davis was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago.

Killed – Marcel T. Buchanan (Kansas City, MO)

Marcel T. Buchanan

KANSAS CITY (AP) – A Kansas City man has been charged with killing another man during a handgun exchange.

The Jackson County prosecutor’s office announced Saturday night that 19-year-old Chan O. Brown faces one count each of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutors are requesting a bond of $250,000. It isn’t immediately clear if Brown has an attorney.

The probable cause statement says 25-year-old Marcel Buchanan was found dead earlier this month inside a parked vehicle. A witness told detectives he and Buchanan met Brown to exchange firearms. The witness said that after the trade, Brown pulled out another handgun and announced that he was going to rob them.

Court documents say a struggle ensued over the firearm, and Buchanan was shot. The witness later identified Brown from a police lineup.

Police officers were called to 62nd Street and South Benton Avenue about 4:30 p.m. on a reported shooting.

According to the New Orleans Police, an armored truck guard who was unloading money at a bank in New Orleans was fatally shot when three men approached him just before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Reports say the robbers took the money and drove off. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Hector Trochez of Kenner.

Police say Trochez was found beside a Loomis vehicle outside of the Chase Bank at South Carrollton and South Claiborne avenues.

NOPD says the suspects abandoned the first vehicle they were in at Adam and Green Streets and fled in a gray Hyundai with a partial plate of 141654.

NEW ORLEANS – At around 10:45 Wednesday morning, three men unleashed a hail of gunfire, ambushing and killing an armored truck guard as he unloaded cash in the parking lot of the Chase Bank at Carrollton and South Claiborne.

The armored truck stopped in the parking lot of the busy Uptown bank, followed by a gray Chevy Tahoe. Loomis armed guard Hector Trochez unloaded more than $265,000 and turned to wheel the currency into the building.

In a flash, three masked gunmen jumped from the Tahoe, shooting at Trochez without warning. He attempted to return fire, but his resistance abruptly ended when a shot from an assault rifle pierced his head. As the echoes of at least 15 gunshots reverberated in the air, the gunmen grabbed the bags of cash and sped away. Inside the armored vehicle, a 22-year-old guard sobbed in shock, while Trochez, her 45-year-old partner, lay dead on the asphalt behind the truck.

Police say an attempted robbery turned deadly when the victim pulled out a gun and opened fire on the suspect.

The incident happened around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Rising Sun and Wyoming Avenues in Philadelphia’s Feltonville section.

Nearly 40 shots were fired around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday when an armed man attempted to rob two men who were walking to their car. One robbery target grabbed his gun and a shootout ensued that saw 37 shots fired.

Police say two accomplices of the stickup man started shooting as well before fleeing.

Two weapons were recovered at the scene overnight, and late today police found a third handgun believed to have been used during the wild shootout.

The robbery victim, 26-year-old Khalif Murray, was critically wounded and remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The initial robber was mortally wounded, having been shot in the head, stomach and back. He is identified as 25-year-old Broderick Howard, who is known to police with pinches including firearms violations dating back to 2006.

A police source said today that the 25-year-old victim has a concealed-carry permit for the handgun used in the shootout, which was recovered at the scene, along with another handgun and 37 shell casings.

Killed – Billy Watson Strickland (Johnston County, NC)

Billy Watson Strickland

BENSON, N.C. — A Four Oaks man found along a Benson highway late Monday morning might have been trying to help the man authorities have charged in his death, Johnston County’s sheriff said Tuesday.

Sheriff Steve Bizzell said Anthony Edward Messer, 31, was an acquaintance of the son of Billy Watson Strickland, 62, who was found shot and robbed on the side of Hannah Creek Road.

Messer, 31, of 2095 Stewart Road in Four Oaks, was arrested Monday afternoon and faces charges of murder and robbery in the case.

A passing driver spotted the man, who he said was covered with abrasions and barely breathing, just before noon. The witness told WRAL News that a gun was found at the scene.

Killed – Dustin Friedland (Millburn, NJ)

Dustin Friedland

MILLBURN — The 30-year-old man who was shot and killed during a carjacking at The Mall at Short Hills on Sunday night apparently struggled with his attackers shortly before he was killed, law enforcement sources told The Star-Ledger today.

Dustin Friedland, an attorney from Hoboken, tried to fend off the two men who tried to carjack his 2012 silver Range Rover at gunpoint in the mall parking lot around 9:10 p.m. on Sunday, according to the two sources, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

Friedland was shot in the head during the altercation, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray, and he died at Morristown Memorial Medical Center at 11:45 p.m. His wife was with him at the time, but she was not injured, Murray said.

Friedland had opened the front door of the Range Rover for his wife, and was trying to enter the vehicle himself when he was approached by the two carjackers, the sources said.

A struggle ensued, and several shots were fired, including the one that killed Friedland, the sources said. Investigators believe the shooter used a handgun, according to the sources.

NEWARK — Four men have been indicted on charges of killing a Hoboken attorney during a carjacking in December at The Mall at Short Hills, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today.

Basim Henry, 33, of South Orange, Hanif Thompson, 29, of Irvington, and Karif Ford, 32, and Kevin Roberts, 35, both of Newark, were indicted in connection with the Dec. 15, 2013 murder of 30-year-old Dustin Friedland, prosecutors said.

The fatal shooting occurred when the four men carjacked Friedland as he and his wife entered their Range Rover on an upper level parking deck at the upscale mall in the Short Hills section of Millburn, prosecutors said.

Friedland’s widow, Jamie Schare Friedland, is pursuing a lawsuit against the mall’s owners as well as the Universal Protection Service, whose officers patrol the mall, and the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad.

Her lawsuit alleges the mall’s owners knew of the history of carjackings in Essex County and failed to take appropriate action.
