Killed – Mario Edward Garnett (Phoenix, AZ)

Mario Edward Garnett1

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com)–A nationwide manhunt ended Saturday when a bank robber, accused of shooting and killing a police officer in Tupelo, Mississippi, was killed during a shootout with police in Arizona.

Investigators say the suspect killed in Phoenix is the same man who shot and killed Sgt. Gale Stauffer Monday. Officer Joseph Maher was also injured in that shooting. The suspect was also caught on camera earlier Monday morning trying to rob a bank in Atlanta, GA.

“All of us hope that the conclusion of this investigation will bring some measure of comfort and peace,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge, Daniel McMullen.

In Tupelo, Mississippi, the FBI along with state and local law enforcement held a media conference, and Beth Stauffer, the widow of Officer Gale Stauffer, also made a statement thanking law enforcement for their work and the nation for their prayers and support.

The man suspected in a spree of bank robberies and the killing of a police officer in Tupelo, Miss., was sentenced in 2010 for threatening to kill President Obama and his predecessors, a federal law enforcement official told ABC News.

Authorities today identified the suspect, who was killed Saturday in a shootout with police outside a Phoenix, Ariz., bank, as Mario Edward Garnett, 40.

An indictment said that in August 2010 Garnett allegedly posted a message to the White House website, saying among other things: “if you order a strike on Iran, I’m going to come up there and blow your brains out on national TV. You scheming hypocrite … Netanyahu is a dead man. Damn Israel.”

Six days later, he allegedly posted another message, saying: “I’m going to settle some scores on behalf of Israel and America’s victims on behalf of those they continue to oppress. I’ll kill president and farmer alike. You are either worth something or you are chaff.”

Garnett was sentenced in June 2011 to eight months behind bars and three years supervised release for the threats against the president.

According to court documents, he was held for a month after his sentencing, but on July 26, 2011, he was let out on supervised released.

He was supposed to participate in a “program of mental health aftercare,” but he violated the conditions of supervised released, saying during a mental health session on Sept. 21, 2011, that his probation officer should be “put to death,” according to the document.

He repeatedly “rants and makes threats,” court documents said at the time.

A federal judge placed Garnett on home confinement with GPS monitoring for 120 days.

But in October 2011, a federal judge sentenced Garnett to 24 months in prison for violating his supervised release, and the judge said he “recommends a facility to evaluate and address the defendant’s mental health.”

Double Shooting – Killed – Michael Clower (Red Rock, AZ)

male

On Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at 6:25 a.m. an armed robbery occurred at the “M Passion Adult Boutique” in Picacho Peak. According to a Pinal County Sherriff’s office press release, two armed suspects entered the business and tied up the female employee in a back room. The female was able to escape and called 9-1-1 as the suspects were running out the back door. The safe from the business was taken by the suspects.

An “attempt to locate” was broadcasted to law enforcement agencies.

At 6:29 a.m. a PCSO deputy located an Audi passenger car in the area of the reported robbery leaving at a high rate of speed westbound on Interstate-10. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle by using his emergency lights and siren. The vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated in which the Audi reached speeds in excess of 120 mph.

At 6:37 a.m. the suspect vehicle exited onto northbound Highway 87. The suspect vehicle pulled into a dirt field and then the suspect vehicle and deputy’s vehicle collided.

Initial information is the two armed suspects exited the vehicle and shot at the deputy. The deputy returned fire and shot both suspects. One suspect died at the scene and the other suspect who was shot in the arm and leg attempted to run. The deputy was able to catch him and attempted to arrest him yet the suspect fought with him.

Eventually the suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital to be treated for his gunshot wounds.

The suspects, who authorities later identified as 32-year-old Michael Clower and 23-year-old Adam Chavez, exited the damaged vehicle and began firing at the officer. The deputy returned fire, killing Clower and striking Chavez in the arm and leg, according to a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Babeu said Chavez fought and struggled with the deputy during the arrest.

The deputy, who is a seven year veteran and member of the SWAT and Search and Rescue teams, appeared to have escaped the head-on collision without injuries, Babeu said.

Chavez was hospitalized but his condition was not available Monday evening.

Killed – Jordan Nava (Youngtown, AZ)

male

Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies have made two arrests in connection with the shooting death of a man Saturday outside a Youngtown hotel.

Jamal Akil Nathani Perryman, 24, of Glendale, was arrested Monday after questioning by detectives, according to a court document acquired Thursday morning.

Deputies took Joseph Gonzales, 22, into custody Wednesday morning after a search warrant on a home near 163rd Avenue and Jomax.

Perryman and Gonzales are accused of trying to rob Jordan Nava of a half-pound of cocaine valued at $7,600 in the parking lot of a Best Western Hotel.

The suspects’ cell phones were both traced to the shooting location, leading to their questioning and arrests.

Gonzales got away the day of the shooting in a ’90s model gray/silver sedan driven by Perryman eastbound on Grand Avenue, according to MCSO spokesman Christopher Hegstrom.

MCSO said Nava, 24, was shot near the Best Western Hotel at 11201 W. Grand Ave. shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday.

The court document said Gonzales pulled a gun while in Nava’s vehicle and ordered him to give up the cocaine. A witness who was acting as the “middle man” for the buy said Nava pulled a gun, but Gonzales fired first.

Gonzales left the vehicle as Nava fired back and got into the car with Perryman, the witness said.

Nava was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Double Murder/Suicide – Dead – Hector Karaca (Tucson, AZ)

Hector Karaca

The suspect in an October double murder in Phoenix has died after a chase and a shooting in Tucson.

KOLD-TV, the CBS affiliate in Tucson, reports that U.S. Marshals and Toledo police served a warrant on the suspect at a motel near the Tucson airport.

Police said that led to a carjacking and a pursuit to 22nd Street and Fifth Avenue in south Tucson where the suspect, Hector “Flaco” Taner Karaca, 24, shot himself.

Police were looking for Karaca in connection with the Oct. 21 murders of 25-year-old Jose Alonso Villa and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Kristen Bianca Furgeri. Their bodies were found in a bed in a back house near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road shortly after 11:30 p.m., said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.

Villa’s brother heard gunshots coming from the back house and told his mother. She looked out the front window and saw Karaca running to her car and leaving, according to the police report.

It also said Villa’s mother waited about 10 minutes until her husband arrived home before calling police. When her husband got home, he checked on his son and Furgeri and found them shot to death.

The charred remains of a white 2005 Hyundai Elantra stolen from the scene were found in an alley near 20th Avenue just north of Buckeye Road the following morning. Police identified the suspect as Karaca, who spent time in the Arizona prison system for vehicle theft.

In an interview with police, Villa’s mother said she went to the back house about 9:30 p.m. and there was a man there she knew as “Flaco” carrying a green, camouflage gun in the home with her son and his girlfriend.

Villa’s father told police Karaca and Villa became friends about a month prior to the deadly shooting and that Karaca would come to the house once a week. On the day of the shooting, Villa’s father said Karaca was trying to sell him the camouflage gun.

He said witnesses saw the suspect get into the family’s Hyundai and drive away with the car’s lights off.

On Dec. 12, authorities located Karaca in Tucson and when they attempted to arrest him, he led police on a chase and then shot himself to death.

PHOENIX – Police are searching for a suspect who shot a man in a Phoenix apartment Thursday morning.

According to Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump, a 20-year-old man was shot just before 7 a.m. near Indian School Road and 23rd Avenue.

The victim Lemuel Warren, 19, who was shot at least once, was transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition but did not survive his injuries, Crump said.

Phoenix police were looking for a man suspected of shooting another man during an apparent domestic dispute Thursday morning.

Police said Cunningham and his girlfriend got in a fight at his girlfriend’s apartment near 23rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

A 20-year-old man, who is the father of one of her children, stepped in the middle of the fight and police said Cunningham shot him. He later died at the hospital.

Police said two children were in the apartment at the time of the shooting. Crump said police don’t think the children saw the shooting.

“We are fortunate that the kids are OK. It was an infant and a 6-year-old. They were not hurt in this. They are with family now and it is our goal to try and locate the suspect,” Crump said.

Double Shooting – Killed – Jeff Ward (Tempe, AZ)

Jeff Ward

Tempe police arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault on Sunday in connection with a fatal shooting during an apartment party, officials said.

Daniel Taylor is accused of firing multiple rounds at about 2a.m. Sunday in the patio area of a party in the 800 block of South River Drive, according to Sgt. Michael Pooley, a Tempe Police Department spokesman.

The shots killed Jeff Ward, 28, and sent a female guest at the party to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Pooley said.

Taylor had arrived at the party uninvited and was asked to leave, Pooley said.

A Tempe man who fired a gun into a house party late last year was sentenced to 31 years in prison Friday for murdering one person and wounding another.

Daniel Cody Taylor, 19, was sentenced in Maricopa County Superior Court by Judge Michael Kemp to 22 years for second-degree murder in the death of Jeff Ward and nine years for aggravated assault for shooting and wounding a woman at the party.

Tempe police said Taylor crashed a party Dec. 7 at an apartment complex near University Drive and Price Road but was told to leave because he was not dressed appropriately. After returning to the party in a different outfit, Taylor was informed that it was a private party and was asked to leave again.

Taylor came back the next morning and fired into the unit’s front patio, police said, killing Ward and wounding the woman.

Killed – Isaac Lankisch (Phoenix, AZ)

Isaac Lankisch

The man who Phoenix police say hurled a hatchet at officers moments before those officers shot him has died.

Police said 42-year-old Isaac Lankisch went into another man’s apartment near Campbell and 27th avenues at about 8 p.m. Friday and took something.

After the homeowner confronted Lankisch and told him return the property, Lankisch began chasing the man with a knife and small ax, police said. Lankisch threw the ax and missed the victim, instead striking a hallway wall.

When the homeowner barricaded himself in the bathroom, police said Lankisch began chopping away at walls in the apartment.

Lankisch eventually left and the homeowner called 911. Two officers who were already at the apartment complex on an unrelated call, responded and called for backup.

“Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the original two officers were informed that Lankisch was on foot on Highland Avenue,” said Sgt. Tommy Thompson in a statement. “They went there and located him in front of some other apartments in the area of 2500 W. Highland, which east of the original call.”

Lankisch still had the hatchet in one hand and “an approximately 10-inch hunting type knife in the other hand,” he said.

“The officers drew their weapons and began giving verbal commands for him to drop the weapons and get on the ground, but he would not comply,” Thompson said.

Lankisch approached the officers, holding the knife and ax “in an offensive manner.”

After he got within about 10 feet of one of the officers, he threw the hatchet at them.

“That officer then fired at Lankisch, who was struck and fell to the ground,” Thompson said. “The officers rendered first aid until Phoenix Fire Department personnel arrived.”

Lankisch was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. No officers were injured.

Killed – Scott Mitchell (Tucson, AZ)

Scott Mitchell1

A north-side man, reported to be suicidal, was shot and killed Monday by a sheriff’s deputy.

A woman at a home in the 5200 block of North Crowley Lane near the intersection of North La Cholla Boulevard and West Curtis Road, called 911 at about 9:30 a.m. She wanted deputies to “check the welfare of her roommate who was suffering a mental health crisis and had a firearm,” Deputy Courtney Rodriguez, spokeswoman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, said in a news release.

Deputies made contact with 46-year-old Scott Mitchell and determined a court order was in place for a mental health evaluation, Rodriguez said.

“Deputies were able to get the female out of the house safely and confirmed with her that Mr. Mitchell was suicidal, armed with a firearm and barricaded inside the residence. Deputies attempted to talk Mr. Mitchell out, but the attempts were unsuccessful,” Rodriguez said.

Due to the threat posed by Mitchell, nearby homes were evacuated, school buses were diverted and the SWAT team was called in.

In an attempt to communicate with Mitchell, SWAT members sent a robot into the home, but Mitchell shot it, disabling the cameras, Rodriguez said.

SWAT members then shot chemical agents into the home. When Mitchell fired at deputies outside the home, he was shot and killed by Sgt. Derek Tyra, a 14-year veteran of the department, Rodriguez said. Mitchell died sometime before 5:30 p.m.

Killed – Jeffrey Bellemare (Phoenix, AZ)

Jeffrey Bellemare

PHOENIX – Phoenix police have identified an apartment complex security guard who was murdered in West Phoenix overnight.

Police say 59-year-old Jeffery Bellemare was working at a complex near 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

Officer James Holmes said officers responded to a shooting call around 1:30 a.m. where they found the victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He said Bellemare died at the scene.

PHOENIX – It’s been more than a year since a security guard was shot and killed outside a west Phoenix apartment complex and police are still looking to identify two suspects.

Phoenix police officers found Jeffrey Bellemare, 59, suffering from gunshot wounds on Nov. 29, 2013 at the Graybriar Condominiums near 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Bellemare died at the scene.

A man and a woman were seen running from the area and then fled in an older model sedan. Police have released composite sketches of the two suspects and hopes someone in the public may recognize them.

After spending Thanksgiving Day with family at his Surprise home last year, Jeff Bellemare dressed in his uniform and headed for the Maryvale apartment complex where for a year he’d worked as a night security guard.

At about 1:30 a.m., as Black Friday shoppers emerged from Valley stores feeling victorious or snubbed, someone shot the 59-year-old father of two in the torso at the Graybriar Condominiums.

First responders pronounced him dead less than 15 minutes later.

Killed – Scott Greer Bybee (Prescott, AZ)

Larry Clay1

PRESCOTT – The police officer who fatally shot Larry Clay on the night of Nov. 19 was alone, according to several police reports released Wednesday afternoon.

Officer Jared Willis responded to a report of a suicidal man in the 4800 block of Hornet Drive at about 8:45 p.m. and ultimately shot and killed Clay, whom he said had a knife in each hand and charged him with them.

According to a report by the second officer on the scene, Gary Novak, he was responding from Yavapai Regional Medical Center to back-up Willis with lights and siren.

“At one point, I heard Officer Willis on the radio say that he was not going to approach the subject and was going to wait for other officers to arrive on the scene,” Novak wrote. As he turned onto Hornet Drive and shut off his siren, he heard Willis radio, “‘Shots fired, he charged me,'” Novak wrote.

When he arrived at the scene, “15 to 30 seconds” later, he first passed two other people in the street, who were later identified as family members. Clay was laying in a driveway, two kitchen knives nearby on the ground, and was still breathing, Novak wrote.

Shortly after that, he wrote, Clay took a deep breath and apparently stopped breathing, and Willis asked about doing CPR. Novak told him to wait while he checked for more weapons, and finding that Clay had none in his hands, the two officers started CPR.

Within two minutes, he wrote, Prescott Fire and Lifeline ambulance crews arrived to take Clay to the hospital.

Novak took Willis aside and had him sit on a low wall. A family member came over, patted Willis on the back, and “said something to the effect of ‘I am sorry I had to call you. You did the right thing,'” he wrote. That family member told officers that he heard Willis tell Clay to stop and put the knives down, but that Clay continued to advance on Willis at what he described as a “medium speed walk,” starting from about 15 feet away.

A third report said that a witness told police that he’d heard three shots in rapid succession. A different witness told an officer that he had heard six shots.

Another officer’s report said that the dispatcher told officers that Clay had already stabbed himself in the stomach prior to officer’s arrival.

“He’s threatened that he’s prepared for suicide by cop,” a caller to 911 said.

Clay was pronounced dead at YRMC at 9:24 p.m., a report said, and Arizona Department of Public Safety investigators took over the incident sometime after 5 a.m.

Police came to the location after there was a report of a suicidal threat. The officer gave the 44-year-old verbal commands and the man then ignored him and headed towards the police officer, said Clayton Heath, a spokesman for Prescott police. Police shot the man then rendered first aid, according to a press release on the shooting.

Killed – Isha Baczynski (Mesa, AZ)

Isha Baczynski1

MESA, Ariz. –
Mesa Police say an altercation between two groups of people apparently led to the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old woman whose body was found on the street near a home.

Sgt. Tony Landato says the woman was found dead in the street with at least one apparent gunshot wound around 3 a.m. Tuesday near University and Stapley.

One group is believed to have gathered at the home and at least two other individuals were in a vehicle.

A neighbor says he heard shots ring out and then a woman shouting for help.

Killed – Antonio Flores (Tucson, AZ)

male

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) – Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Antonio Flores.

Police are searching for what is described as a greenish-colored SUV or crossover-type vehicle in connection with this incident.

Sgt. Maria Hakwe with Tucson Police tells KGUN9 that around 10:16 p.m. Saturday, an officer heard gunfire while driving through the intersection of South Park Avenue and East Irvington Road.

As he neared the intersection, several individuals in a gray 2004 Chevrolet Silverado flagged down the officer.

The officer was told that one of the occupants of the Silverado had been struck by gunfire and was in the bed of the truck. The officer called for back up and began to administer CPR to Flores, said Hawke.

Tucson Fire Department transported Flores to a local hospital, but he died as a result of his injuries.

Police say Antonio Flores and his friends were at a Circle K at Campbell Avenue and Drexel Road on November 16 when someone shot an air soft gun at them from a green SUV.

The group followed the SUV to get a license plate number when someone took out a more lethal weapon.

“The people in the other car just started shooting up the truck,” said Dennis Flores. “Shooting my son, and piercing his heart.”

Mass Shooting – Killed – Carol Sanders (Phoenix, AZ)

Carol Sanders

PHOENIX — The man who killed his child, wife and brother-in-law Tuesday night in Phoenix before turning his gun on himself, once drove his family into the desert, forced them to the ground and threatened them with a gun, according to court records.

“It all ends now,” the 53-year-old Michael Sanders told his terrified wife and daughter, 51-year-old Carol Sanders and 14-year-old Audrey as they cowered on the ground, according to a restraining order petition filed by the woman in October.

The document depicted Sanders as erratic and prone to violent outbursts.

“He kept remarking what a nice day it was,” she wrote. “We strongly believed he was saying ‘nice day to die.’ We believed he planned to kill us all.”

The incident, which started with an argument between Michael Sanders and his daughter during a family outing, was one of numerous episodes in which he threatened his family members, according to Carol Sanders.

On one occasion, he raged at his wife because she purchased some fish at the grocery store and forgot it in the car, according Carol Sanders’ account in the document. When she arrived at home, Michael Sanders screamed expletives at her, threw the remaining groceries around the house and punched several holes in the wall of the family’s garage.

Later, he told his wife that she had “30 days” to get money from her mother to pay off the home or he’d “burn it down with me inside.”

The threats became a reality Tuesday when Michael Sanders fatally shot Carol, Audra and Carol’s brother, 49-year-old Tom Fitzpatrick at their home in northeast Phoenix, police said. He then turned the gun on himself, police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said.

Police believe he contacted his wife as she was gathering her belongings from their house.

The victims were found scattered throughout the property. Carol Sanders was found on fire in the backyard, Audra Sanders was found dead inside the home and Carol’s brother was found in the front yard.

Michael’s body was found in the alley behind the home, Crump said.

Just seven hours before the killings, Michael and Carol Sanders appeared at an order-of-protection hearing in a Maricopa County courtroom at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Michael, an unemployed Phoenix man, was challenging the restraining order his wife got in October. She had filed for divorce Oct. 14, citing domestic violence.

The judge declined to lift the order, Carol’s attorney Leslie Satterlee said. Another judge that day had just authorized supervised visits between Michael and his daughter Audra.

“After the judge entered the order, there was nothing to indicate that he would react in this way. He did not blow up. He did not storm out. There was no indication that this was coming.”

Police first started receiving calls about 4 p.m. Tuesday with reports of shots being fired in the residential neighborhood, Crump said.

Police dispatchers could hear gunshots in the background while the neighbors were on the phone, he said.

Investigators now believe Michael Sanders forced his way into the home as his wife was removing belongings with Audra and her brother, police said.

Mass Shooting – Dead – Michael Sanders (Phoenix, AZ)

Michael Sanders

Killed – Male Teen – Jesus Enriquez (Glendale, AZ)

Jesus Enriquez1

A teen’s death remains a mystery. He was shot in a supermarket parking lot and later died from his wounds. Now the victim’s family is speaking out in hopes of solving the crime.

Glendale Police don’t know who did and they don’t know why it happened. They’re answers everyone is looking for, but police now need help from the public in hopes of bringing justice to the boy’s family.

Jesus Enriquez was shot Saturday night and police believe there were at least two people there that may have seen it happen — and those two men were caught on surveillance camera video leaving the scene. Authorities are now calling them persons of interest.

“He didn’t make it through the third surgery. His heart stopped again.. passed away.”

This woman didn’t want to be identified. She’s a relative of the 16-year-old victim.

The shooting happened at a Fry’s parking lot at 43rd Avenue and Northern around 11:15 p.m.

Police have released surveillance pictures of a dark colored 4 door sedan. They believe the two men inside may have information about what happened that night.

Killed – Jose Orejel (Yuma, AZ)

male

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) – Authorities in Yuma say a shooting victim has died and the man arrested in the case is now accused of homicide.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office says 32-year-old Jose Orejel died Friday. He’d been hospitalized in critical condition since being shot several times Wednesday afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Office says 47-year-old Robert Moore was arrested Thursday afternoon at a residence where numerous weapons were recovered.

Katz has previously said that evidence at trial would reveal that an armed Moore made the decision on Nov. 6 to drive to Jose Orejel’s home due to a prolonged dispute over $500.

Katz previously stated that when Moore arrived at the home he pulled into the driveway and called 32-year-old Orejel outside. When Orejel opened the door, Moore allegedly fired three shots at him, striking him twice, Katz said.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 800 block of Eleanor Avenue at about 12:44 p.m. in reference to shots fired. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

YUMA, Ariz. – A jury has found a Yuma man charged with murder not guilty on all counts. The jury in the Robert Wade Moore III trial came upon the verdict Thursday.

Moore was found not guilty on one count of second-degree murder and not guilty on one count of manslaughter.

We spoke to Moore moments after he was released Thursday afternoon, but he had no comment.

Moore was originally charged with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting Jose Orejel over $500. The defense stated to the jury that Moore has no criminal history or evidence that he had financial problems. Leading to the question, why would he kill someone over $500. However, the State tried convincing the jury that Moore is not a reasonable man and planned the killing all along.

Killed – Alfred San Antonio (Phoenix, AZ)

male

PHOENIX –
An officer involved shooting in north Phoenix leaves one man dead and police say they had no choice but to shot after the man came at them with a knife.

“I’m getting into bed.. I hear this real loud pop pop pop pop,” said Justin Blum.

Neighbors heard the gunshots ring out around 11:30 p.m. Sunday — counting nine of them.

“All of the sudden, my roommate bursts in the door and says get out here, somebody just shot at a cop,” said Blum.

The shooting took place inside the doorway of unit 2 of a complex located near 5th Avenue and Tonopah.

“I heard just cops and it sounded like a high speed pursuit, then I heard the chopper pretty much right over our condo complex,” said Jeff Van Horn.

Police were called to the area because of a domestic dispute — an argument between the 51-year-old suspect and his 54-year-old girlfriend. She escaped after he attacked her with a chef’s knife and called 911. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, identified as Alfred San Antonio, lunged at them with the weapon.

“This particular suspect still had this knife and began charging at both officers. One of the officers discharged his weapon, striking this particular suspect. That suspect was declared deceased on scene,” said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

According to Phoenix Police, the girlfriend told officers the 54-year-old had been drinking, but the cause of the argument is unknown and neighbors say they had never seen the couple fight before.

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a valley strip club manager and his girlfriend. On Sunday morning, police found their bodies inside their home near 75th Avenue and Deer Valley Road.

Mass Shooting – Killed – Female Teen – Shannon Moore (Phoenix, AZ)

female

Phoenix police said Sunday that they may never learn exactly why a 56-year-old man fatally shot a family of four who lived next door before killing himself in a townhouse complex in Phoenix.

But neighbors in the family-oriented, 250-unit complex, near 17th Avenue and Hazelwood Street, said the shooter often argued with pet owners about barking dogs and left written notes complaining about the noise.

“He didn’t want noise,” neighbor and dog owner Denise Lopez said. “The dogs were waking him up. He always used to complain.”

What is known, according to police, is that Michael Dante Guzzo took his pump-action shotgun and, at about 9a.m. Saturday, fatally shot his next-door neighbors: Bruce Moore, 66; his daughter, Renee, 36; her husband, Michael, 42, who took his wife’s last name; their son, Shannon, 17; and two dogs.

Guzzo then began walking to a unit across the courtyard, where a Chihuahua and pit bull had started barking at the gunfire, the dogs’ owner said.

Guzzo banged and kicked the front door, said Libni, who lives at the unit and declined to provide a last name. Libni’s girlfriend had just left the shower and was trying to open the door and hold a towel around herself at the same time, he said, but he sent her upstairs to be with the two children.

“That’s when he fired through the door,” said Libni, who was standing to the side at the time.

Guzzo then began to walk away as Libni raced up to the second floor, retrieved his gun and opened a window, he said.

“A man’s got to protect his family,” Libni said.

At the sound of the window opening, Guzzo raised the shotgun and fired, shattering the glass, Libni said. He said he had just ducked.

“It’s a miracle,” he said.

Guzzo then walked across the courtyard to his unit, went inside and fatally shot himself, police said.

The ex-wife of the man who murdered his four neighbors and killed their two dogs Saturday because the canines wouldn’t stop barking loudly, says there were warning signs he would snap.
Michael Guzzo, the 56-year-old gunman, became enraged over the noise from the pets at a neighboring townhouse in a Phoenix apartment complex, detectives say.
They believe the pharmacist used a pump-action shotgun to shoot dead Bruce Moore, 66; his daughter, Renee Moore, 36; her husband Michael Moore, 42 (who took his wife’s last name); and their son, Shannon Moore, 17. He also slaughtered their dogs.
Guzzo then fired several rounds into the door of another neighbor. He returned home and killed himself.

Killed – Josh Collins (Yuma, AZ)

Josh Collins

10/26/2013 (Last updated: 10/31/2013) | Officer Joe Franklin, Public Affairs Unit

On Saturday October 26, 2013 at 2:21 a.m., The Yuma Police Department responded to 1600 W. 12th Street for a report of shots fired.

UPDATE: The investigation revealed James Spurgeon, former Chief of the Cocopah Police Department, was at the residence of Angela Cochnauer. Spurgeon, Cochnauer and two juveniles were asleep in the apartment when Joshua Collins forced entry into the apartment and assaulted Spurgeon and Cochnauer with a baseball bat and stabbed Spurgeon multiple times.

During the assault Spurgeon was able to retrieve his handgun and shot Collins. Collins was found deceased from a gunshot wound inside the apartment.

Spurgeon and Cochnauer were taken to Yuma Regional medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. The two juveniles were not injured during the incident and were not aware of what had occurred.

The case remains under investigation.

The Yuma Police Department has finished its investigation into a fatal shooting involving former Cocopah Police Department Chief James Spurgeon and has determined that he acted in self-defense. As a result, no criminal charges will be filed.

Spokeswoman Sgt. Leanne Worthen of the Yuma Police Department said that the completed report of the investigation had been sent to the Yuma County Attorney’s Office to be reviewed but that it did not recommend any charges be filed.

Roger Nelson, chief criminal deputy attorney, confirmed that his office did receive the investigation report but said it was sent it back to the police department without having been reviewed because no charges were being alleged.

The police chief for the Cocopah Tribe of Arizona has been fired after a deadly shooting while he was off duty.

The Yuma Sun reports that the Cocopah Indian Tribe terminated James Spurgeon, two days after he and a woman, who is a tribal police department employee, were beaten.

Police said a man attacked Spurgeon and the woman about 2:20 a.m. Saturday at the woman’s home in Yuma. Both had blunt force trauma to the head and Spurgeon was stabbed multiple times, according to police.

The suspect, Josh Collins, was found dead in the home when Yuma police responded to a report of gunshots. Yuma police said Collins’ gunshot wound did not appear to be self-inflicted, but it was unclear who pulled the trigger.
