RIVERSIDE – A man fatally shot during an armed confrontation with Riverside police was identified today.

He was Dontae Hayes, 20, of Riverside, according to the Riverside County Coroner.

The shooting occurred when Hayes pulled a handgun after making contact with officers at Arlington Park, near Miller and Roosevelt streets, at 11:40 a.m., said Lt. Guy Toussant of the Riverside Police Department.

Killed – Damien Toney Jr. (Santa Rosa, CA)

male

A man was shot and killed early Tuesday in Santa Rosa, police said.

Damien Toney Jr., 20, of Santa Rosa was found on the ground in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 2001 Piner Road about 2 a.m. He had been shot in the chest and arm.

Witnesses testified Monday that a man shot dead outside a Santa Rosa party had been fighting inside with his suspected killer’s cousin just minutes before he was gunned down.

Damien Wadell Toney Jr., 20, was seen choking the cousin, identified in court as Paula Brisco, in the Piner Road apartment early New Year’s Eve, police Detective Andrew Riley said at a preliminary hearing.

The two, who had a child together, apparently got into a fight in front of about 25 other partygoers, Riley said. Toney was kicked out and continued a confrontation with Brisco’s cousin, then 15-year-old Joseph Mario Varela, Riley said.

Varela pulled a gun and shot Toney in the chest, police and other party guests said. Police believe Varela’s friend, Manuel Khiobouakham, 19, also fired on Toney.

After initially denying his role, Varela told police he aimed the gun at Toney just to scare him, Riley said. But he said he ended up shooting Toney when the older man punched him in the chin, he said.

Riley said an autopsy showed Toney was shot twice in the chest with two different guns. The gun Varela is believed to have used, a .45-caliber pistol, was found in a friend’s house, Riley said.

(01-03) 17:54 PST SANTA ROSA — A 15-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with murder in the shooting death of a man outside a Santa Rosa party, prosecutors said Friday.

Joseph Mario Varela was also charged with gun enhancements in the slaying Tuesday of Damien Toney Jr., 20, of Santa Rosa. Varela is beng held without bail at Sonoma County Jail.

Triple Shooting – Wounded – Man (San Diego, CA)

male

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Homicide detectives tried to determine Monday what led to a man being fatally shot in the Linda Vista area of San Diego.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 2000 block of Drescher Street around 5 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego police Lt. Jorge Duran.

Once there, they learned a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound had just been dropped off at a local hospital, the lieutenant said in a statement. The man died a short time later.

Trial began Monday for a San Diego man accused of a crime spree that ended with a gunfight in a Point Loma neighborhood two years ago.

“The defendant went on a rampage,” Deputy District Attorney Joe McLaughlin told a jury as he described the events of December 29, 2013.

Sean O’Toole of Linda Vista was shot on Drescher Street and then dropped off at a local hospital where he later died.

Hours later, Travis Bondurant was shot and injured at the La Jolla Biltmore Motel on La Jolla Boulevard.

McLaughlin said investigators had prepared a warrant to arrest Joseph Anthony Hill, a man with a long criminal history, in both shootings. Members of the Violent Crimes Task Force went to Catalina Street in Point Loma on Dec. 30 to take Hill into custody.

That’s when Hill tried to run and in the process struck a law enforcement officer with his car.

On Monday, Deputy DA McLaughlin told jurors O’Toole was shot because he had “disrespected” Hill’s girlfriend.

A jury deliberated only a few hours before finding Joseph Anthony Hill guilty of murdering Sean O’Toole and wounding Travis Bondurant on Dec. 29, 2013.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – The investigation continued Tuesday after U.S. Marshals opened fire on a murder suspect in a Point Loma neighborhood, leaving him critically wounded.

Police said members of the multi-agency Fugitive Task Force tried to arrest Joseph Hill at 1661 Catalina Boulevard at 8:35 a.m. Monday for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of a male in the Linda Vista area Sunday. Neighbors have identified that victim as Sean O’Toole.

Killed – Patrick Addo Odoikyene (Marina Del Rey, CA)

Patrick Addo Odoikyene

atrick Addo Odoikyene, a 47-year-old black man, was shot and killed Dec. 30 in the 4200 block of Via Marina Court in Marina Del Rey, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Odoikyene was found in the early morning hours in a parking lot of an upscale apartment complex with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses heard multiple gunshots and saw a man “wearing dark clothing and a dark hooded sweatshirt” running from the scene.

Odoikyene was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m. at the scene, said Ed Winter, a spokesman with the coroner’s office.

In an email sent Monday to residents of the Shores apartments, management identified Odoikyene as a “courtesy patrol” team member.

A person with knowledge of the incident who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was still ongoing said courtesy patrol members are employees of an outside firm who assist the complex’s residents and visitors.

Witnesses in the 4200 block of Via Marina Court heard two male voices arguing, doors slamming and then two gunshots at around 2:45 a.m, Lt. Dave Dolson of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

A former security guard charged with killing his supervisor at a Marina Del Rey apartment complex is due in court Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Byron Keith Street, 47, has been charged with one count of murder with a special circumstance allegation that the murder was committed during a burglary. Street is due in court Wednesday for an arraignment hearing. Street also faces three counts of vandalism of property worth over $400.

Street worked as a security guard at an upscale apartment complex but was suspended by Patrick Odoikyene, 47, his supervisor, for bringing his girlfriend to work.

Prosecutors say Street fatally shot Odoikyene on Dec. 30.

Killed – Bethany Lytle (Taft, CA)

Bethany Lytle

A woman from Taft was shot and killed after she failed to drop a dagger she was threatening deputies with, according to Kern County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

On Sunday at about 7:40 p.m., deputies from the Taft Substation were sent to a home in the 800 block of Filmore Street in response to an unknown situation.

While deputies were driving to the location, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center told deputies that the resident, 31-year-old Bethany Lytle of Taft had an active no bail arrest warrant for a Sheriff’s parole violation.

When deputies arrived at the location, they said they spoke to a man who told deputies Lytle was brandishing a knife, breaking picture frames and other household items inside the home.

The man also told deputies Lytle had to be held down on the ground while 911 was called.

Deputies went into the home to check the welfare of Lytle. Deputies said they found Lytle inside the home sitting down and speaking incoherently. Lytle suddenly stood up and armed herself with a double edged dagger with an approximate ten inch blade, deputies said.

Lytle became combative and one deputy immediately deployed and activated his Taser, but it was ineffective, according to officials. Another deputy had his duty weapon drawn and both deputies repeatedly ordered Lytle to drop the dagger, but she refused and charged at the deputies, according to officials.

Deputies said Lytle closed the distance to the deputies within five feet and held the dagger above her head while making a stabbing motion.

One of the deputies opened fire and Lytle fell to the ground, but did not drop the dagger.

Lytle continued to refuse deputies orders to drop the dagger, deputies said. Lytle eventually threw the dagger away and deputies took her into custody, according to deputies.

Medical aid immediately arrived to the home to treat Lytle’s injuries. Lytle was uncooperative and struggled with medical aid to the point she had to be restrained. Lytle was airlifted to Kern Medical Center where she later died from her injuries.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that one of its deputies has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a Dec. 29 shooting in Taft.

Deputy Johnny Frisbie’s use of his gun was determined by an internal review board to be within department policy.

Bethany Lytle, 31, was shot and killed after she threatened deputies with the 10-inch knife, the sheriff’s office said at the time.

Triple Shooting – Killed – Sean O’Toole (San Diego, CA)

Sean O'Toole

Killed – Eduardo Guijosa (Salinas, CA)

Eduardo Guijosa

A bicycling 24-year-old was killed Saturday on East Boronda Road, according to the Salinas Police Department which immediately arrested three for their suspected involvement.

Officers were dispatched at 11:56 a.m. to East Boronda Road near McKinnon Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Eduardo Guijosa suffering at least one gunshot wound.

Guijosa, the apparent victim of a drive-by shooting, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

His death is the 25th homicide of the year for Salinas.

Further investigation revealed Guijosa was reportedly confronted by Antonio Lopez, Alejandro Saldana and Richard Vasquez, all 22. The three allegedly parked their vehicle nearby and waited for Guijosa to pass.

“When Guijosa rode his bicycle close to where the three were waiting, Saldana and Vasquez shot Guijosa while Lopez remained in the nearby waiting vehicle,” police said.

The three then fled the area in Lopez’s vehicle, police said. A description of the vehicle led police to a house on West Curtis Street. All three were taken into custody without incident. They were later booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of murder and participating in a criminal street gang.

Killed – Aubert Gholston (Oakland, CA)

male

A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Friday morning while driving a car in West Oakland.

Aubert Gholston was shot about 11:15 a.m. inside the moving Chevrolet, which crashed into a light pole outside Prescott Elementary School, authorities said. The school, at 920 Campbell St., was not in session when the shooting occurred.

OAKLAND — Murder charges have been filed against a man suspected of fatally shooting an acquaintance last December in West Oakland in a dispute over a woman, authorities said Thursday.

Investigators said video surveillance in the area recovered by police played a key role in identifying the suspect, Lyle “Jersey” Johnson, also known as Isiah Lowery, 23. He was arrested in Las Vegas June 26 by U.S. Marshals.

Johnson is charged with the Dec. 27, 2013 fatal shooing of Aubert Gholston, 26. Besides the murder count he is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He has a prior 2009 drug conviction, authorities said.

Officer Jason Andersen said the two men knew each other and were having a dispute over a woman they both knew who was close to Gholston. Andersen said that on the day of the killing, Johnson was in a liquor store in the 1600 block of Eighth Street when he saw Gholston park his car across the street. He went to the car and confronted Gholston, who was inside the vehicle. After and argument, Johnson shot Gholston, Andersen said.

Gholston was able to drive away but crashed in the 900 block of Campbell Street and died at the scene.

Killed – Asa James Dolak (Torrance, CA)

Asa James Dolak

A Torrance man shot to death by police after he set fire to his girlfriend’s apartment and mother’s house was a “stupid child” whose anger was fueled by alcohol, his dog’s death and court orders to stay away from his loved ones, his brother said.

Asa James Dolak, 19, was reportedly extremely drunk when he confronted his former girlfriend, Emily Barrett, with a knife early Thursday at the apartment he occasionally shared with her and their 2-year-old son in north Torrance. A friend might have given Dolak alcohol as a gift on Christmas, said his brother, Samuel Sanchez.

Dolak suffered from mental illness, including dramatic highs and lows, and took medication at times, Sanchez said in an interview Saturday.

Dolak was sought since 12:15 a.m. when he reportedly broke into the apartment he formerly shared with his girlfriend at 167th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard and threatened to kill her with a knife, Watt said.

Dolak’s whereabouts remained unknown throughout the day until officers searching his neighborhood found him in the restroom, about a block from his mother’s house.

Dolak, who appeared to be bloody, was holding a knife and ran from officers. They chased him until the shooting occurred. Firefighters pronounced him dead at 1:35 p.m., Watt said.

The sergeant said an extensive search for Dolak ensued and about 1:30 p.m. someone “that identically matched Mr. Dolak” was seen at the school. The teenage suspect was seen in a girl’s restroom, bleeding from a hand and armed with a knife.

Watt said a short foot pursuit began and Dolak ran to a nearby sports field where he was fatally shot.

“He confronted the officers and failed to comply with their demands and ultimately there was an officer-involved shooting,” he said. “He was armed with a knife.”

Triple Shooting – Wounded – Male Teen (Sacramento, CA)

male

Sacramento police have released composite sketches of a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy in a south Sacramento neighborhood on Christmas.

The sketches depict the same suspect as described by two separate witnesses, according to a Police Department news release.

Officers responded about 9:44 p.m. Dec. 25 to the 7400 block of 29th Street regarding a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a teenage boy suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The youth, identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Brayan Castanon, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries and died Dec. 28.

During the investigation, officers discovered that other people also had been struck by gunfire. An additional victim, also in his teens, arrived at a hospital and medical staff members informed police the youth had suffered injuries that were not life threatening. A short time later, a third teenage shooting victim was found near the scene of the shooting and taken to a hospital. Police said he, too, was expected to survive.

Killed – Deshawn Luther Needam (Compton, CA)

male

Deshawn Luther Needom, a 24-year-old black man, was found dead in a Compton parking lot on Christmas Day, his body riddled with bullets, authorities said.

Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department heard gunfire in the area near the 700 block of West Laurel Street just before 9 p.m. on December 25 and drove in that direction.

“When they reached the location, they found the victim, lying in the parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds,” according to a release from the sheriff’s department.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to his funeral program, Needom was raised by a maternal aunt until her death in 2003 when he went to live with an older sister. He attended Ronald McNair Elementary School, Willowbrook Middle School and Leuzinger High School.

“He had such an infectious laugh that he would end up making everyone laugh, even on their worst day,” said the program for the service held at St. Peter A.O.H. Church of God. “He understood the meaning of family and stood hard for what he believed in.”

Needom’s survivors include his five children.

Killed – Juliana Barrios (Los Angeles, CA)

Juliana Barrios1

Juliana Barrios, a 24-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Wednesday, Dec. 25 in the 700 block of East 87th Street in Green Meadows, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 4:50 p.m., Barrios and a group of people were standing outside a home where a holiday party was taking place when three Latinos in a light-colored truck drove by and a person inside fired multiple rounds at the group, LAPD Det. Sal LaBarbera said.

Barrios, of Pomona, was struck and driven to Martin Luther King Jr. Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center for treatment.

Barrios was pronounced dead in the parking lot at 5:16 p.m. after the medical center, which does not serve trauma patients, could not provide treatment, said Ed Winter, a spokesman with the coroner’s office.

The area where Barrios was shot is frequented by gang members, said LAPD Lt. Jeff Nolte with the Criminal Gang Homicide Division. Barrios could have been mistaken for someone else, Nolte said.

Murder/Suicide – Killed – Violeta Aragon (San Lorenzo, CA)

female

SAN LORENZO — A man who Alameda County Sheriff’s investigators say killed his wife Christmas Day and then turned the gun on himself has been identified as Amerwinfino Lim Jr., 40.

An autopsy conducted Thursday on Lim showed that he died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s office.

A separate autopsy for Lim’s 36-year-old wife — who the Sheriff’s Office identified as Violeta Aragon — is slated to take place on Friday, a coroner’s spokeswoman said.

Aragon was shot multiple times about 2 a.m. in the garage of a small yellow house on the 1800 block of Via Amigos. The shooting was likely sparked by some sort of “marital discord” between the couple, Sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

He declined to discuss details or elaborate on why the fatal shooting took place due to the sensitive nature of the case, but did say the couple did not have custody issues, had not filed for divorce and that no restraining order had been filed within the household.

The shooting occurred with three children ranging in age from 11 to 17 years and two grandparents home at the time of the shooting.

One of the couple’s sons was inside the garage and witnessed the shooting, Nelson said.

LYNWOOD – A man who authorities say was shot to death in a Lynwood street by a man with whom he may have been arguing was identified Thursday by the coroner’s office.

He was Charles DeJon Finch, 34, of Los Angeles, said coroner’s Lt. Joe Bale.

Finch was found lying near the back passenger door of a car in the 12400 block of Bullis Road near Carlin Avenue, at about 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, said Deputy Kim Manatt of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

“A deputy from the Century Sheriff’s Station was patrolling in the area when he heard the sound of gunshots,’’ Manatt said. “The deputy drove in the direction of the gunshots and when he reached the location, he was flagged down by a witness who pointed out the victim, who was lying in the northbound lane of Bullis Road suffering from gunshot wounds.

Triple Murder – Killed – Ilona Flint (San Diego, CA)

Salvatore Belvedere left Gianni Belvedere right

Left: Salvatore Belvedere; Center: Gianni Belvedere; Right: Ilona Flint

The mysterious killings of local residents Ilona Flint, Salvatore Belvedere and Gianni Belvedere have rocked and saddened San Diego. Now, six months into this case, many questions remain unanswered as the San Diego Police Department continues to put together pieces of the puzzle.
Here’s a timeline of key events in this triple homicide case, which first began on the early hours of Christmas Eve with a deadly shooting outside Westfield Mission Valley Mall.

Dec. 24, 2013 – The Christmas Eve Shooting:
At around 1:15 a.m., Ilona Flint and Salvatore Belvedere, both 22 years old, are critically shot in a parking lot outside the Macy’s department store at San Diego’s Mission Valley Mall. Despite being shot in the head, Flint manages to call 911 to report the shooting, telling dispatchers she’s injured near the mall. Minutes later, officers locate the wounded duo inside a vehicle in the 1600-block of Camino Del Rio North. Flint is pronounced dead at the scene. Salvatore, suffering life-threatening gunshot wounds to the head and torso, is transported to a local hospital. SDPD Lt. Mike Hastings holds a briefing on the Christmas Eve shooting and says police are looking for a possible suspect, described as a 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 man wearing tan pants.

Dec. 26, 2013 – Gianni Belvedere is Missing:
Two days after the parking lot shooting, the families of both Flint and Salvatore hold a brief news conference announcing that 24-year-old Gianni Belvedere – Sal’s older brother and Flint’s fiancé – has gone missing. Police confirm Gianni was last seen on Dec. 23 around 10 p.m. at his Tierrasanta home. “Gianni, we need you to come home,” pleads one family member, between tears. “Please call us.” Investigators confirm the Christmas Eve shooting does not appear to be connected to any sort of robbery. Lt. Hastings says a possible vehicle of interest in the case is a 2008-2011 dark gray Honda sedan.

Dec. 27, 2013 – Salvatore Succumbs to Injuries, Search Continues for Gianni:
The Belvedere family confirms that Sal has died from injuries sustained in the Christmas Eve shooting. Police say they’re still searching for Gianni, and issue a missing person bulletin describing Gianni as an Italian-American man with brown hair and brown eyes. He’s 6 feet tall, 165 pounds and likely driving a four-door, dark green 2004 Toyota Camry XLE with the Utah license plate B154VZ. The Belvedere family says Gianni may have also been at the mall with Flint and Sal at the time of the shooting.

Jan. 17, 2014 – Body Found in Trunk of Missing Man’s Car in Riverside, Calif.:
The dark green Toyota Camry with the Utah license plate described in the SDPD’s missing person bulletin for Gianni is found in Riverside, Calif., about an hour-and-a-half north of San Diego County. A passerby calls authorities at around 11:45 a.m. and reports that a foul odor is coming from the trunk area of vehicle, which is parked at a shopping center. When officers arrive on scene, they open the trunk and find the decomposed body of a man inside. On Jan. 18, a Belvedere family member confirms the victim in the trunk is Gianni. The SDPD says it’s working with the Riverside Police Department on this development. An autopsy is scheduled for the following week.

Jan. 23, 2014 – Confirmed by PD: Victim in Trunk is Gianni:
Police officially confirm that the man found dead in the trunk of the car in Riverside is, in fact, missing San Diego resident Gianni Belvedere. The cause of death is not released but detectives clarify that Gianni was a victim of homicide.

June 21, 2014 — Police, Family Confirm Arrest in Triple-Homicide Case
Nearly six months to the date of the Mission Valley Christmas Eve murders, the Belvedere family and SDPD confirm that an arrest has been made in the slayings of Ilona, Sal and Gianni. Carlo Gallapo Mercado, 29, was booked on three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the killings. The SDPD schedules a news briefing for Monday, June 23, to share more information.

Nov. 3, 2014 — Mercado Committed to State Hospital
Judge Joseph P. Brannigan found Mercado not competent to stand trial and ordered he be treated at Patton State Hospital for three years or until he is found competent to assist in his own defense.

The third victim of an unsolved triple-homicide case that has gripped San Diego since Christmas Eve died as a result of fatal gunshot wound(s) to the head, the San Diego Police Department confirmed Friday.

The SDPD said San Diego resident-turned-missing-person Gianni Belvedere, 24, was not able to survive injuries sustained in some sort of shooting, according to preliminary findings from the Riverside Medical Examiner’s office. His final autopsy report has not yet been completed, but San Diego police said this gives new insight into how he died.

On Dec. 24, 2013, at around 1:15 a.m., Flint and Salvatore were found critically shot in a parking lot outside the Macy’s department store at Westfield Mission Valley mall in San Diego’s Mission Valley area. Flint was pronounced dead at the scene of the Christmas Eve shooting. Salvatore died at the hospital a few days later.

A couple days after the shooting, the Belvedere family and San Diego police announced that Gianni Belvedere had gone missing. He was last seen at his home in Tierrasanta on Dec. 23, 2013, around 10 p.m. – just hours before the fatal shooting of his fiancée and brother.

A San Diego shopping mall was negligent in not providing better security measures that might have prevented the Christmas Eve shooting deaths of three persons in its parking lot, a lawsuit asserts.

Filed by attorney Daniel Gilleon in San Diego County Superior Court, the lawsuit says that the mall’s owner, Westfield Centers, “failed to use reasonable care to protect their patrons, guests, tenants and invitees.”

Triple Murder – Killed – Gianni Belvedere (San Diego, CA)

Killed – Male Teen – Carlos Ponce (Madera, CA)

Carlos Ponce1

Madera Police have arrested a man they believe is responsible for shooting and killing a Madera teenager.

Eddie Luna was arrested Friday in the death of 15-year-old Carlos Ponce.

Police say Ponce was shot and killed Monday night just before 9:30 p.m. on the 1600 block of Lacreta Avenue.

Luna is now behind bars at the Madera County Jail on charges of murder and committing murder for the benefit of a criminal street gang.

Family members held a candlelight vigil for a Madera teenager who police say was shot and killed after trying to save his little brother.

Investigators say Carlos Ponce and his brother were walking through their neighborhood to play video games with a friend when a gunman ran up and fired. Police are still looking for the suspect who got away. They believe the suspect mistook the teenager’s dark clothing for rival gang colors.

Songs of sorrow echoed through a small Madera living room where 15 year-old Carlos Ponce lived with his family. A close friend said the 10th grader at Madera South High School spent his evenings working in the fields to provide for his family.

Branden Anderson

Marcaill Deandre Wormley was sentenced today to spend 95 years and four months to the rest of his life in prison for the Dec. 23, 2013, shooting death of Branden Anderson in North Sacramento.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge imposed the term on Wormley, 32, for the murder as well as for three other felonies – hit and run and evasion of police officers in a high speed chase the day of his arrest and for attempting to dissuade a witness before trial.

Killed – Jose Santos Villa (Fresno, CA)

male

Two people have been found guilty of first-degree murder in a local case from December 2013.

Investigators say Cosmen Alvarez shot and killed Jose Santos Villa at the Vagabond Inn in Southwest Fresno. Alvarez admits Villa once owed him more than $30,000 in cash — mostly for the 20 pounds of pot he says Villa owed him.

Alvarez left town with his girlfriend, Yolanda Aviles, who stood accused of helping her boyfriend. Police found the couple about a week later in Los Angeles.

Both Alvarez and Aviles were found guilty of first-degree murder on Friday.

They were convicted of killing Jose Santos Villa, 36, who was unarmed when he was shot seven times outside the Vagabond Inn near Highway 99 and Jensen Avenue on Dec. 22, 2013, prosecutor Sam Dalesandro told the jury.

The couple also was convicted of kidnapping Villa’s friend. Dalesandro said the couple held a gun to the friend’s head and ordered him to tell them of Villa’s whereabouts.

Superior Court Judge Denise Whitehead sentenced 35-year-old Cosmen Alvarez to 72 years to life in prison. His girlfriend, Yolanda Aviles, 48, was sentenced to 36 years to life in prison.

Prosecutor Sam Dalesandro said the couple deserved the maximum sentence because their crime involved great violence.

Killed – Gonzalo Perez Garcia-Garcia (Highland Park, CA)

Gonzalo Perez Garcia-Garcia

Detectives sought the public’s help Tuesday in providing any information on possible suspects in the shooting death in Highland Park.

38-year-old Gonzalo Perez was killed after the shooting on Sunday night around 10:25 p.m. at a 7-11 convenience store located in the 5100 block of North Figueroa Street, according to LAPD Northeast Homicide Detectives.

When the officers arrived, they found Perez lying on the floor with what appeared to be a gunshot wound, investigators said.

Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics responded to the location and transported the victim to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment, according to authorities. Despite life-saving efforts, Perez died as a result of his injuries a short time later.

Investigators said Perez was working in the convenience store as suspects entered the location posing as customers. After the victim walked to the register to assist the suspects, the first suspect jumped over the counter and produced a handgun demanding money from the cash register, according to police.

On Wednesday, a 19-year-old Compton man was charged with special circumstance murder during a robbery and multiple other counts related to previous alleged robberies. Rasheen Childs, who has been on probation for two prior convictions, was due to be arraigned Jan. 21.
