Killed – Christopher George (Longmont, CO)

ChristopherGeorge

The Boulder County Coroner on Monday afternoon identified the man shot and killed by a Boulder County deputy on Sunday as 43-year-old Christopher George.

Detectives continued working Monday on the investigation into the fatal shooting of George in his home southwest of Longmont after his mother called for help because he had been holed up in a room for days.

Members of the county’s multi-agency critical incident team visited neighbors of the home at 8309 N. 95th St. on Monday morning and revisited the scene inside the house, which was surrounded by police crime scene tape and secured by Boulder County deputies. The home was released to its owner, Dixie George, at about 6:15 p.m. Monday.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office reported on Sunday that a woman at the home called county dispatch at 8:35 a.m. and asked for help for her adult son, who had been in his room for several days. The woman reported to the sheriff’s office that he did not have access to weapons.

Deputy Brandon Bussard, a two-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, and Deputy Gary Robinson, a 16-year veteran, responded about 10 minutes later. They went to the room to speak with George and he reportedly “displayed” a gun during the conversation.

Boulder County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cmdr. Heidi Prentup reported Bussard fired several rounds and wounded the man, who died at 12:50 p.m. on Sunday after he was flown to Denver Health Medical Center for surgery.

“The male, who was seated on his bed partially covered with blankets, reached behind his back. One deputy advanced in an attempt to gain control of the man’s arm. The man produced a 9 mm handgun and pointed it at the deputy,” Prentup wrote Monday in an email update about the shooting. “Both deputies saw the gun, heard the suspect manipulating the weapon and feared for their life. (Bussard) ultimately fired three times, striking the male twice in the torso, with the third round going into the bed.

When the suspect’s handgun was examined later it was jammed, appearing to have malfunctioned.”

The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday that a Boulder County deputy who shot and killed a Longmont area man in his home Dec. 29, 2013, was justified in the shooting.

Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett and chief trial deputy Sean Finn sent a letter to Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle that detailed the review of the case and the finding.

As a result, prosecutors will not file charges against Boulder County Deputy Brandon Bussard, who shot Christopher George, 43, after George reportedly pulled a gun and pointed it at Bussard.

Killed – Lawrence Sanchez (Clifton, CO)

Lawrence Sanchez

An hours-long standoff with law enforcement in an Orchard Mesa neighborhood ended with the shooting of an unidentified suspect around 4 p.m., according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and scanner traffic.

Communications between dispatch and officials at the scene indicated the suspect, armed with a rifle, refused to come out of the home situated on C Road between 32 and 32 1/2 roads.

Officers at the scene reported shots were fired at 3:29 p.m. and again at 4:06, scanner traffic indicated.

Witnesses reported roads into the neighborhood were blocked off by police as the incident unfolded.

Initial reports from the sheriff’s office stated the county SWAT team was called to the scene in Clifton and contact was made with the suspect.

“The situation is now being considered an officer-involved shooting,” an updated sheriff’s office report said. “The situation is being turned over to the Critical Incident Response Team.”

Mesa County, Colo. – Immediately following the shooting incident that occurred at 3210 B ½ Road, on Saturday, December 14, 2013, the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was activated to conduct an investigation. The CIRT on this investigation is being lead by the Grand Junction Police Department.

In tangent with the Mesa County Coroner’s Office, the suspect is identified as Lawrence Sanchez, DOB: 10/16/1964. At the time of his death, he was wanted for escape from a halfway house (Community Corrections) and other related charges by The Colorado Department of Corrections.

Two deputies were placed and remain on administrative leave for their involvement in this shooting, which is standard procedure.

As noted earlier, the CIRT investigation continues. Once complete, likely a matter of weeks, the case will be forwarded to District Attorney Pete Hautzinger, for his review and disposition.

Murder/Suicide – Dead – Karl Pierson (Littleton, CO)

Karl Pierson

Claire Davis, the 17-year-old who was shot in the head during the Dec. 13 shooting at Arapahoe High School, died Saturday afternoon with her family at her side.

The high school senior died at 4:29 p.m. at Littleton Adventist Hospital after eight days on life support.

LITTLETON, Colo. – The family of a teenage girl who was shot and killed at Arapahoe High School are promising not to sue the school district over the murder of their daughter, if Littleton Public Schools agrees to a list of requests including an arbiter’s investigation.

Claire Davis was shot by a classmate inside Arapahoe High School in December 2013. She died in the hospital eight days later.

The shooter, fellow student, Karl Pierson, took his own life after shooting Claire, investigators said.

“They want to how Karl Pierson, who was known as troubled, how he fell through cracks and why he didn’t get the help he needed,” said family spokeswoman Katy Atkinson.

Davis, 17, was shot in the head by another student with a shotgun at point-blank range at the school on Dec. 13, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said.

The father of a Colorado teen that killed a classmate asked for his son to be remembered as a person “who lost his way for a moment” on the same day a vigil was held to commemorate the victim on the one-year anniversary of her death.

Police say Pierson was looking for revenge against a librarian, but couldn’t find the faculty member and killed himself as a school resource officer closed in. Davis was just a random victim, police surmised, and the gunman and victim didn’t even know each other.

In Friday’s shooting, Pierson was armed with a shotgun, a bandolier stocked with ammunition, a machete and three Molotov cocktails, Robinson said. Pierson fired five shots within 1 minute and 20 seconds, he said.

But the 18-year-old senior also was filled with a rage that began to unravel when he was told he could no longer serve as a captain on his speech and debate team. His father said the entries in his diary, which was kept on a thumb drive and hidden in his car, began to show a downward spiral that neither he nor his ex-wife could have imagined.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said Friday’s shooting at Arapahoe High School by 18-year-old Karl Pierson likely was motivated by retaliation against a librarian at the school.

Robinson said that it appeared the librarian was the initial target but that the gunman planned to hurt multiple people.

He said the teen bought the pump-action shotgun legally Dec. 6 at a local store.

Anyone over 18 is allowed to buy a shotgun in Colorado; only those over 21 can legally buy a handgun.

The gunman, Karl Pierson, intended to kill another person in the school but fired randomly hitting 17-year-old Claire Davis at close range. He then killed himself.[2] Claire Davis died December 21, 2013.[3]
