Killed – Roy D. Rhodes (Milford, DE)

male

MILFORD, Del.- Delaware State Police say Roy D. Rhodes has died from injuries sustained Saturday in an officer-involved shooting in Milford.

Rhodes, 58, of Milford, had been listed in critical condition at Milford Memorial Hospital since the shooting. He was pronounced dead Monday evening.

DSP on Monday also identified the officer involved as Milford Police Sgt. Robert Young, 39, an 18-year veteran.

Young was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the DSP investigation into the incident.

The DSP Homicide Unit is investigating at the request of the Milford Police Department.

DSP spokesman Sgt. Paul Shavack said Rhodes was driving a Lincoln Town Car at around 4 p.m. Saturday on Milford-Harrington Highway when he nearly caused a crash with another car. The other car avoided a collision, and Rhodes crashed through some bushes and stopped in a driveway.

Shavack said the other driver got out to check on Rhodes, who was holding a knife to his own throat. The driver took the knife from Rhodes, who then allegedly pulled out a handgun. That is when Sgt. Young arrived on the scene.

Shavack said Young repeatedly ordered Rhodes to put down the gun, but he refused. Young then shot Rhodes three times in the upper body and lower extremity, according to Shavack. Both the knife and the handgun were recovered at the scene.

Killed – Darby N. Ford (New Castle, DE)

male

It wasn’t long after Jason Willard pulled into his Glasgow apartment complex Monday that he knew something was wrong.

New Castle County police were scouring the grounds of the Autumn Park apartment complex that afternoon, preventing him from leaving with his newborn child.

“I thought it was something stupid going on and then I see the body there,” Willard said Tuesday evening pointing to a concrete slab at the entrance to his apartment building.

“He was just laying there dead,” Willard said of a man shot to death Monday afternoon.

Police identified the victim Tuesday as Darby N. Ford, 19, of the 1600 block of S. 23rd St. in Philadelphia, although court records also listed another address in the first block of Bellewoode Drive. That is in the Bristol Place community off U.S. 40 in Glasgow.

Ford was found shot to death about 1:20 p.m. in the first block of Winterhaven Drive in the Autumn Park complex, said Cpl. John Weglarz. The gunman remains at large.

Killed – Kareem Owens (Wilmington, DE)

Kareem Owens

A 23-year-old man became the city’s latest homicide victim Sunday night when he was gunned down at an intersection in the city’s Ninth Ward, police said.

The slaying raises the year’s homicide rate in the city by gunfire to 15 victims, including the two victims killed inside the court house earlier this year.

The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at West 24th and North Washington streets, Cpl. Mark Ivey said.

Police have identified the victim as Kareem Owens, 23, of Wilmington.

Ivey said police were alerted to shots fired in the area by a 911 call.

The victim was found by officers in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The officers administered CPR and the victim was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Ivey said.

Four days later on Oct., 31, police announced that U.S. Marshals arrested 30-year-old David Hinson of the 2500 block of North Washington Street in Wilmington and charged him with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited in connection with Owens’ death.

WILMINGTON — Two women were shot to death when a gunman opened fire at the New Castle County Courthouse this morning, state police said. The shooter, who police said is dead, was the former father-in-law of one of the women killed, law enforcement and legal sources said.

Police said the gunman entered the lobby of the courthouse about 8 a.m. and started shooting, and Capitol Police returned fire. Two injured Capitol Police officers were shot in the chest, but saved by bulletproof vests.

One wounded officer was identified this evening as Steven Rinehart, 50, a retired New Castle County officer who joined the state force last year, law enforcement sources say.

Police said Rinehart and another Capitol Police officer were injured in the shooting, and were later released after seeking treatment at a hospital.

The other injured officer has not been identified, but police said he is a 42-year-old on the force seven years.

Law enforcement and legal sources identified the gunman as Thomas Matusiewicz, the 68-year-old father of David T. Matusiewicz, a former optometrist who spent time in federal prison for kidnapping his three daughters and bank fraud in 2007.

David Matusiewicz, 45, was involved in a bitter custody fight with his ex-wife, Christine Belford, identified by law enforcement and legal sources as one of the women killed in the shooting. The other woman killed has not been identified.

WILMINGTON, Del. – February 12, 2013 (WPVI) — Police say the gunman in Monday’s courthouse shooting in Wilmington, that also left two women dead, killed himself during an exchange of gunfire with police.

Police sources say Matusiewicz’s intended target was one of the victims, 39-year-old Christine Belford, the ex-wife of Matusiewicz’s son, David.

Belford and her friend, 47-year-old Laura Elizabeth Mulford of Newark, were both killed in the attack.

Investigators say both Thomas and David Matusiewicz were at the courthouse at about 7:40 a.m. Monday. David, who was there for a child support hearing involving Belford, had already gone through the security station.

Police say Thomas Matusiewicz never breached the security perimeter beyond the metal detectors inside the courthouse.

At about 8:15 a.m., Belford and Mulford entered the public lobby. Police say Thomas Matusiewicz approached and shot Belford. Mulford was shot as she tried to flee.

Capitol police officers exchanged fire with Matusiewicz. Both officers were hit in their bulletproof vests and were not seriously injured.
