Killed – Fuad Ali (Minneapolis, MN)

Fuad Ali

A Minneapolis businessman was shot in south Minneapolis early Wednesday and died about 12 hours later at Hennepin County Medical Center — leaving many in the Somali community shaken and angered.

Slain was Fuad Ali, 31, a Somali-American who owned two banquet halls and was beloved by the Somali arts community, particularly singers and other entertainers, said Abdirizak Bihi, director of the Somali Education and Social Advocacy Center.

“The younger generation loved him,” Bihi said. “He gave them space to breathe. This is a big loss for the second generation [of Somali immigrants], which is the majority of our community right now.”

Police responded at 12:50 a.m. to a “shots fired” call in the 2600 block of Pleasant Avenue S., where officers found a man lying in the street with a gunshot wound.

Ali was being dropped off in the area of Pillsbury Avenue between 26th and 27th streets, near his residence, when he was shot, Bihi said. Family members told Bihi that they didn’t believe he had been robbed

Double Shooting – Killed – Ted Hoffstrom (Orono, MN)

Ted Hoffstrom

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department says there is no doubt that 30-year-old Ted Hoffstrom murdered Dr. Stephen Larson in his Orono home over the weekend.

Sources tell WCCO-TV that Larson, a 74-year-old OBGYN doctor, delivered Hoffstrom, who was born prematurely and suffered from mental and physical ailments. Hoffstrom allegedly blamed those issues on the delivery. Hoffstrom was believed to have long harbored hostility towards Larson.

Larson was on the phone with a patient when he answered the door at his Orono home Friday night. The patient heard words exchanged and the phone went dead. It was the patient who called 911.

Audio from the sheriff’s dispatch reveals officers encountered a despondent Hoffstrom. Officers can be heard asking each other for a Taser. They also talk about Hoffstrom’s gun.

“Mr. Hoffstrom was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and after diligent attempts to negotiate with Mr. Hoffstrom, shots were fired. Mr. Hoffstrom died at the scene,” Stanek said.

Officers then discovered the deceased Larson inside his home. He had died of multiple gunshot wounds before officers arrived.

Larson, 74, was shot and killed at his home on the 1000 block of Heritage Lane just before 9 p.m. Friday. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, Larson died of multiple gunshot wounds. He was the only one home at the time of the incident.

Killed – Gypsy Wayne Watts (Pine County, MN)

Gypsy Wayne Watts

23-year-old Gypsy Wayne Watts was shot to death while attempting to rob a home on a farm in Sandstone, Minn., early Thursday. Police said two suspects invaded the home at 2:30 a.m., and one of them was armed with a handgun. The elderly homeowner was able to retrieve his own gun during the confrontation and shot and killed the armed suspect. “He feels terrible. He feels absolutely terrible,” Pine County Sheriff Robin Cole said of the homeowner. The victim had come to the man’s home with three others to steal his painkillers, which he takes for pain associated with his terminal cancer.

SANDSTONE — A 75-year-old Sandstone man pretended to be blind and hard of hearing to fool an armed intruder into lowering his gun, court papers say. The intruder ended up dead and another suspect is facing prison time.

Charles Carlson told authorities he was sleeping on his porch when he awoke to noises in his farmhouse early Thursday. He went to his kitchen and ended up with a gun pointed at his head.

Carlson knew the man’s gun was loaded, “as he could see the rounds in each chamber of the cylinder,” according to charges filed Friday. So Carlson pretended to be blind and hard of hearing. The intruder lowered his weapon for a moment — long enough for Carlson to grab his own loaded handgun. Carlson shot Gypsy Wayne Watts, 23, twice during the ensuing confrontation, the charges say. Watts died at the scene.

“It was an unfortunate thing that happened,” Carlson said.

Pine County authorities charged a 16-year-old alleged accomplice in juvenile court with three counts of first-degree burglary Friday. The charges allege that the intruders were after drugs and money.

Authorities contend that the 16-year-old was at a party when he told Watts about a man he knew only as “Carlson,” who the teen believed would have cash and drugs. The pair, both wearing latex gloves, found Carlson’s wallet in a bedroom and swiped a $100 bill before Carlson woke up.

Triple Shooting – Killed – Adlai Xiong (St Paul, MN)

male

Police have identified the 27-year-old man who was shot and killed outside a St. Paul bar over the weekend.

Adlai Xiong, of Minneapolis, was shot in the head outside the Moonshine Saloon at 1129 E. 7th St early Saturday morning.

Authorities were called to the Dayton’s Bluff bar at 1:19 a.m. for a report of an assault. When police arrived, they found three people who had been shot. Xiong was taken to Regions Hospital where he died. The two other victims are recovering from their wounds and have not been identified.

A St. Paul man was convicted Wednesday on the 14 counts he faced in the murder of a rival gang member at the Moonshine Saloon.

Ramsey County District Judge Judith Tilsen immediately sentenced True Thao in Ramsey County District Court to three consecutive life sentences, with no possibility of parole.

True Thao, 31, shot and killed Adlai Xiong, 27, outside the bar early on Oct. 26.

The motivation for the killing came eight months earlier, when someone from the OMB gang got into a fight at the Moonshine that ended in two people stabbed, prosecutor Elizabeth Lamin said at True Thao’s trial. Cher Vang, 28, died. That case remains unsolved.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – A St. Paul man is charged with 2nd-degree murder and two counts of 2nd-degree attempted murders after a gang-related drive-by shooting in front of a bar on St. Paul’s east side.

According to the criminal complaint, 31-year-old True Thao allegedly fired a semi-automatic handgun in to a crowd of people standing in front of the Moonshine Bar at 1179 E. Seventh St. on the evening of Oct. 26.

Witnesses say Thao, who was driving a dark blue Acura TL, pulled up about 15 to 20 feet away from the bar, rolled down his window and took aim at the group with what appeared to be a Tec-9 with an extended clip.
Adlai Xiong, 27, was killed after suffering three gunshot wounds, one of which was to the head.
Two others, a man and a woman, each suffered three gunshot wounds. Both survived.

Killed – Michael Regner Tray (Minnetonka, MN)

Michael Regner Tray

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has identified the 27-year-old man who was shot and killed by Minnetonka police on Wednesday.

Michael Tray of Austin was killed in an underground garage at Claremont Apartments after walking around carrying a cocked revolver just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. A resident told police he didn’t live there, but was walking around with the gun before police confronted him in the parking garage at 10761 Smetana Road near Excelsior Boulevard. Tray died at the scene.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the incident. It was the first officer-involved fatal shooting in the history of the police department, a spokeswoman said, referring all questions to the county.

The names of the Minnetonka police officers who responded to the shooting will be released next week. Police Chief Mark Raquet referred questions to the county, but said the incident was isolated and residents shouldn’t be concerned for their safety.

The family of a 27-year-old man shot and killed by Minnetonka police on Wednesday is seeking answers after the first officer-involved fatal shooting in the suburban department’s history.

Police responded to the Claremont Apartments on the 10700 block of Smetana Road at about 8:24 p.m. on a report of a person with a gun.

The Minnetonka Police Department has released the names of the officers involved in the killing of Austin native Michael Regner Tray, 27, Oct, 23 at the Claremont Apartments in Minnetonka.

The officers are James Comings and Ryan Smith.

Comings was hired by the Minnetonka Police Department April 16, 2012 and was previously employed by the U.S Border Patrol 2005-2011.

Smith was hired by the Minnetonka Police Department effective June 25, 2012 and was previously employed as a detention deputy with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office beginning in 2009 until he was hired by Minnetonka.

Neither officer has had any citizen complaints or disciplinary action with the Minnetonka Police Department, according to city officials.

Killed – Aaron James Moran (Shakopee, MN)

Aaron James Moran1

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a man who was fatally shot in Shakopee.

The Hennepin County medical examiner’s office identified the victim Thursday as 32-year-old Aaron James Moran of Shakopee.

The medical examiner says Moran died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers were dispatched to a house on a report of an armed robbery about 7 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived, they found Moran suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anthony James Cox, who was found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder Monday night in the shooting death of a Shakopee man last year, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole by District Court Judge Christian Wilton.

Cox, 22, of Minneapolis, was also found guilty of first-degree aggravated robbery in the slaying of 32-year-old Aaron James Moran of Shakopee on Oct. 22.

A grand jury indicted Cox on Dec. 5 on three charges of first-degree murder, and they relate to murder with premeditation and two counts of murder with intent while committing a felony. He was also charged with first-degree aggravated robbery.

Another man charged in the case, Brooks Ellery Kurr, 36, of Annandale, pleaded guilty on Dec. 2 to aiding and abetting unintentional second-degree murder. Kurr, who testified for the prosecution, has not been sentenced.

According to court documents, authorities said that Moran had a negative relationship with Kurr, a former co-worker. The two had worked at the limousine shuttle service Affordable Town Car.

Cox shot Moran four times on the evening of Oct. 22 at Moran’s home on Prairie Street in Shakopee. Moran’s 15-year-old nephew was home at the time and witnessed the shooting. The nephew told police that the shooter took property from the home, which was stored in a backpack, before fleeing the scene.

Police located Cox and Kurr near Shakopee on Oct. 26 using a device that tracks cell phones. Police were soon told that a suspicious black male was seen in the alley between Seventh and Eighth avenues, just blocks from Moran’s house. Police arrested Cox, who was allegedly in possession of the backpack stolen from Moran’s residence, which contained a cell phone and ammunition.

Kurr, 36, was a driver for a limo service in Shakopee and believed that Moran, a dispatcher at Affordable Town Car Service, was keeping limo runs from him, according to the criminal complaint. He knew the victim was keeping a log that detailed when he was late for work and when he didn’t answer his phone, and he blamed Moran when he was fired after a drug test showed methamphetamine use, the complaint said.

It said Kurr even staked out Moran’s house to see if the victim was going on runs that Kurr thought should be his.

Double Shooting – Killed – Reginald Antwine Haynes Sr. (Minneapolis, MN)

male

Minneapolis police are investigating a deadly shooting that took place early Sunday morning in the parking lot of an Uptown bar.

The shooting occurred just after 2 a.m. in the Mortimer’s Bar parking lot on Franklin Avenue and Lyndale Avenue S.

Two men were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, but one of them died upon arrival. The second victim is currently in critical condition, and it is not clear if there is any relationship between the two.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed 31-year-old Reginald Antwine Haynes Sr. died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. The other victim has not been identified.

Hayws walked into Mortimer’s just after 12:30 a.m., and police say the shooting that made it the last night out he would ever have was not a random incident.

Authorities say the three men — the shooter and the two victims — all knew each other. They left at bar close and got into an argument.

Killed – Erick Renada Pineda Ordonez (St Paul, MN)

male

St. Paul police have identified the homicide victim found dead of a gunshot wound in a Frogtown alley Friday morning.

The body of Erick Renada Pineda Ordonez, 20, of St. Paul, was found at 7 a.m. Friday in the 600 block of Van Buren Avenue. Police want the public’s help in finding out what happened to him.

James W. Davis-Drew was charged with second degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Erick Renada Pineda Ordonez, of St. Paul. Davis-Drew was accused of aiding and abetting and being aided in Ordonez’s unintentional death during a robbery attempt.

Witnesses said they heard several gunshots around 3 a.m. One witness said two men ran eastbound through the alley after the shots were fired. Another witness said he saw Ordonez’s car drive north on St. Albans Street crossing Van Buren Avenue with the brake lights illuminated. A little later, he noticed brake lights from behind the house at 665 Van Buren Avenue. Later, the witness saw a man on crutches walk east on the sidewalk in front of the house and appear to meet up with a woman who walked from across the street before he lost sight of them. The witness then heard gunshots come from behind the house.

A fingerprint lifted from the inside handle of the front passenger door of Ordonez’s car matched the known print for Davis-Drew, who was sentenced in 2008 to more than 4 years in prison for first degree aggravated robbery.

Police found Ordonez’s wallet without cash inside of a grill in the front yard of 639 Van Buren Avenue, where Davis-Drew sleeps once or twice a week.

Bank records showed that Ordonez withdrew more than $300 from his account on Oct. 11 a little after 2 a.m. at a Super America convenience store in Fridley. The investigation revealed that a taxi had picked up a fare at 639 Van Buren Avenue about 3:30 a.m. and took a man to the Greyhound bus station in Minneapolis.

When Davis-Drew was spotted on Oct. 22, he ran from officers and dropped a bag and backpack, which contained a handgun and marijuana.

Davis-Drew told police he was homeless and had found the backpack after he got off the bus, which goes against video which shows him on the bus already with the backpack. He said Ordonez gave him a ride from the Super America at Old Hudson Road and White Bear Avenue and then dropped him off at St. Albans and Grotto streets. He said he called a cab from 639 Van Buren to go to the bus depot to visit family, but the depot was closed.

Video from the SuperAmerica shows Ordonez getting into his vehicle with Davis-Drew, a man on crutches and another man.

Killed – Adam E. Poole (Hubbard County, MN)

Adam E. Poole

A duck-hunting trip took a deadly turn in northern Minnesota Saturday afternoon when a mishap claimed the life of a 23-year-old man.

The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office says the hunter, 23-year-old Adam Earl Poole, and a friend were hunting in a channel between two lakes when they stood up at the same time to shoot at ducks. Poole’s hunting partner lost his balance while firing and accidently shot Poole in the head with his shotgun.

First responders received a 911 call just before 4:45 p.m. and rushed to the remote location in Crow Wing Lake Township. By the time they arrived Poole had died of his injuries.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy but at this point Poole’s death appears to be a terrible accident.

The Park Rapids Examiner reports that Poole was a newlywed and an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Wedding pictures posted on his Facebook page featured an overjoyed groom and groomsmen dressed in satin camouflage vests and hats.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. Hubbard County deputies and medical staff responded to the scene.

Murder/Suicide – Killed – Gilbert R. Avieda (Brooklyn Center, MN)

male

Authorities on Wednesday released the name of a man who was killed by his son before the younger man killed himself in the family’s Brooklyn Center home. Gilbert R. Avieda, 65, was shot multiple times shortly before 1 a.m. Monday at the home in the 1300 block of 72nd Avenue N., according to the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office.

A man shot and killed his father, then fatally shot himself early Monday in their Brooklyn Center home, authorities said.

The shooter’s mother suffered a bullet wound in her arm but was not an intended target during the domestic dispute, which happened about 1 a.m. in the 1300 block of 72nd Av. N., according to police.

The woman, who was no longer married to the father, is recovering, police added.

Other people were in the home at the time of the shooting, according to police.

While the majority of domestic violence homicides involve a man murdering a woman, and domestic incidents in general are commonly between a man and woman, domestic violence can occur in any type of relationship. In Brooklyn Center, Gilbert Ramos Avieda, age 65, was shot and killed by his son Sept. 23 after a domestic dispute. Avieda’s son then turned the gun on himself. Avieda’s ex-wife also suffered a gunshot wound on her arm.

Killed – Palagor Jobi (Burnsville, MN)

Palagor Jobi

Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, Palagor Jobi stepped out of Nina’s Grill in Burnsville and struck up a conversation with a woman, his friends say.

After her boyfriend told him not to talk to her, the two exchanged words, then blows, witnesses said. Both went down, and soon gunshots rang out.

Jobi never got back up. Authorities say the suspected shooter, Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson, 31, drove away with two women in the car.

One person is dead after a shooting outside a bar in Burnsville, Minn.

It happened outside the parking lot of Nina’s Grill around 2 a.m. Sunday, according to police. When officers arrived at the bar, located at 2510 Horizon Dr., they found a deceased man in the parking lot.

It took less than two hours Wednesday for jurors in Dakota County District Court to convict Shavelle Chavez Nelson of first-degree premeditated murder in the death almost 14 months ago of Palagor (Paul) Jobi.

Shortly after the verdicts were read, District Judge Kathryn Messerich sentenced Nelson, 32, to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He showed no emotion and told the judge he had nothing to say.

One of two people involved in the deaths of a former University of Minnesota student and a man shot at a Burnsville bar last fall pleaded guilty Friday.

According to court documents, Ashley Conrade is charged with first-degree and second-degree murder and aiding an offender after 22-year-old Anarea Schunk’s body was found dumped along a rural road in Rice County in October 2013. Schunk had been stabbed almost two dozen times.

Schunk’s former boyfriend Shavelle Chavez-Nelson is also charged with murder in Schunk’s death.
Schunk disappeared after the shooting death of 23-year-old Palagor Obang Jobi on Sept. 22, 2013, at Nina’s Grill in Burnsville, according to police. Conrade pleaded guilty to charges of aiding an offender in this case.
Investigators say Conrade, Schunk and Chavez-Nelson returned to Conrade’s Rosemount townhome that evening. The complaints say Schunk was stabbed to death at that townhome.

Dikken was charged in the shooting deaths of 26-year-old Kara Ann Monson and 28-year-old Christopher Allen Panitzke.

Monson died at the scene of multiple gunshots wounds, but Panitzke, 28, remained conscious and made the 911 call that summoned help. He told the first officers on the scene that “Andy” Dikken had shot him and his girlfriend. He again identified Dikken as the assailant when questioned by another officer at the Granite Falls Hospital Emergency Room, where he had been taken for care, according to the complaint.

Panitzke was airlifted to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he died Sept. 8 of complications from the multiple gunshot wounds he suffered.

Killed – Jeffrey Thomas Elling (St Paul, MN)

Jeffery Thomas Elling

A St. Paul man was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder of a pedestrian who argued with him about his driving.

Aloeng Kelly Vang, 19, who told police he was a former gang member, was angry after a confrontation Sunday with Jeffrey Thomas Elling, according to a criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court. He rang the doorbell at Elling’s East Side home and shot him, the complaint said.

Elling, 50, bled to death at the scene, the Ramsey County medical examiner’s office said.

The criminal complaint gives the following account:

Elling and his girlfriend were sitting on their porch in the 1400 block of York Avenue on Sunday. They had gotten up to investigate a cat or raccoon that had crossed the road when Aloeng Vang drove his Toyota around the corner from Birmingham Street, almost hitting Elling and his girlfriend.

Elling confronted the driver.

“Elling told Vang he needed to slow down and be more careful when he drove or someone would end up getting hurt,” the complaint said. Elling then pushed the driver, who fell.

The two men argued. Elling went back to his porch, and Aloeng Vang left.

A relative of Aloeng Vang who lives in the same block as Elling told investigators that Aloeng Vang came to her house angry. He said that Elling had just pushed him and that he needed to do something or get something. She tried to calm him, reminding him that he had a wife and a child.

“Vang said he ‘didn’t want to look like a pussy’ and left,” the complaint said.

A few minutes later, a woman approached Elling and asked him what his dispute was with Aloeng Vang. Elling said he was bothered by Aloeng Vang’s reckless driving.

Ten to 15 minutes after that, about 3 a.m., when Elling and his girlfriend were in their house, the doorbell rang. Elling got up to answer it.

“As Elling began to open the door, (his girlfriend) heard two shots and (heard) the glass front door shatter,” the complaint said. She “saw Elling fall out onto the front steps and out of her view.” She called police.

When officers arrived, they found the front patio door shattered. Elling, who wasn’t breathing, had a bullet wound at the base of his neck. Blood had soaked his shirt.

Two 9mm casings lay at the end of the driveway.

Killed – Hagos Tsegay Melake (Shoreview, MN)

MUGSHOT PROCESSED -

A man found shot to death in Shoreview in late August had been attacked and robbed of thousands of dollars in cash earlier that month in St. Paul.

According to search warrant documents filed Wednesday in Ramsey County District Court, Hagos Tsegay Melake, 26, of South St. Paul, was the victim of a robbery on Aug. 15 in which $3,800 was stolen from him.

Melake ended up with one of the robbers’ cellphones, which he used to try to contact his assailants to get his money back. But when he was unsuccessful, Melake made an appointment to see a St. Paul police officer. He was found dead with a gunshot wound to the back of his head the next day.

On Aug. 29, a deputy responded to a call reporting someone was slumped against a building in the 5700 block of Hamline Avenue N. Melake, who didn’t have identifying documents on him, was found lying in the parking lot.

Melake was last seen leaving the Hunan Garden Restaurant on Cedar Street in downtown St Paul about 1:30 a.m. that day. His card was used at an ATM by an unidentified woman at a U.S. Bank office on W. Broadway in Minneapolis about 4:30 a.m. The woman, who was photographed, is being sought as a person of interest.

Killed – Edmond Fair (Brooklyn Center, MN)

Edmond Fair

The mother of a 24-year-old man killed by a Brooklyn Center police officer last summer during a late-night traffic stop has alleged in a wrongful-death lawsuit that her son was handcuffed, unarmed and defenseless when he was fatally shot in the chest.

In the suit, filed Wednesday in federal court in Minneapolis by the mother of Edmond Fair, officer Ryan Soliday is accused of carrying out “the atrocious and unjustifiable killing” soon after Fair was pulled over driving a van about 2 a.m. on Aug. 23 on Shingle Creek Parkway near the entrance to Interstate 694.

Padden said all four passengers in Fair’s van told him that Fair, 24, was in handcuffs when he was shot in the chest by officer Ryan Soliday.

However, the dash-cam footage released by authorities suggested that Fair was not completely handcuffed when the struggle broke out. The video shows that after Fair’s van was pulled over, Soliday asked the suspect for identification. Soliday then asked Fair if he had any warrants out for his arrest.

In the audio from the footage, Fair is heard pleading with officers not to take him to jail. As Soliday attempts to cuff Fair, Deering is heard warning Fair that he will be Tased if he didn’t comply. Police claim that Fair still resisted, prompting Deering to use the stun gun on him, though it didn’t prove effective. Footage from the car’s interior camera showed fleeting signs of the ensuing struggle, and it appears that Fair’s left hand is loose, as previously claimed by the police. The officers alleged that Fair attempted to grab one of their firearms, which led to Soliday opening fire. The video then features Soliday’s voice shouting, “Shots fired, shots fired.”

MINNEAPOLIS – A federal judge has dismissed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Brooklyn Center police officer who shot and killed a man during a traffic stop.

U.S. District Court Judge David Doty ruled Monday that Officer Ryan Soliday was justified in using deadly force against 24-year-old Edmond Fair in August 2013. Court documents say Fair fought off Soliday and his partner when they tried to handcuff him. They say he grabbed one of their Tasers and shocked them both before Soliday shot him.
