Killed – Eric Andrews (Somerset, NJ)

Eric Andrews

SOMERSET – Two brothers are being sought in the killing of a rapper who was shot to death last weekend at a Franklin Township hair salon.

Somerset County prosecutors say 21-year-old Zaire Cromedy, of New Brunswick, and 28-year-old Antwan Cromedy, of Bound Brook, both face first-degree murder charges in the death of 28-year-old Eric Andrews Jr., whose stage name was E-9.

The charges were announced today, along with a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the whereabouts and arrests of both suspects.

The murder charges stem from the shooting that occurred just before 6 p.m. Sunday inside the Nu Trendz Hair Salon. Authorities say the men began arguing and the dispute soon turned physical.

Andrews was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

Triple Murder – Killed – Female Teen – Zainee Hailey (Newark, NJ)

Zainee Hailey

NEWARK — One of the teenage victims of a Christmas night shooting in Newark was a 13-year-old girl taking out the trash, a law enforcement source said today.

Zainee Hailey, 13, was killed while taking garbage out of her Schley Street house, the source said. She was a student at Bragaw Avenue Elementary School in Newark.

Also killed was Kasson Morman, 15, a resident of North Seventh Street in Newark, the source said. Mormon was a student at Central High School in Newark.

A third teenager was also injured in the shooting. The source did not identify him, but said the teenager is a 14-year-old student at Weequahic High School in Newark.

NEWARK — A 15-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting three teenagers on a Newark street on Christmas night last year, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The boy pleaded guilty on Monday in juvenile court in connection with the murders of Zainee Hailey, Kasson Morman and Abdul Frazier, said Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, he faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced, Carter said. But Carter said juveniles are sentenced to what is called an “indeterminate term,” meaning the parole board can release him when it determines he is rehabilitated.

The boy opened fire in the 100 block of Schley Street, because he felt “disrespected” after one of the boys apparently hit on his girlfriend, law enforcement sources have said.

Hailey, 13, was gunned down as she and her younger brother carried trash bags to the street from her family’s third-floor apartment. Hailey and Morman, 15, died shortly after the attack, and Frazier, 14, died from his injuries a few weeks later.

NEWARK — The third teenager shot on a South Ward street on Christmas night died early this morning in the hospital, authorities said,

Abdul Frazier, 14, was one of the three teenagers shot on Schley Street. He has spent the past three weeks at University Hospital where he died at 4:57 a.m. today, said Thomas Fennelly, the chief assistant Essex County Prosecutor.

The innocent Newark girl died in a hail of bullets intended for somebody else after she and her 7-year-old brother carried the holiday trash to the curb, authorities and neighbors said.

A visitor, Kasson Morman, 15, was also slain when the gunfire erupted around 10 p.m. Wednesday, while a 14-year-old boy was shot but survived — critically wounded with a bullet lodged in his spine.

Mass Shooting – Killed – Pierre Clervoyant (Irvington, NJ)

Pierre Clervoyant

IRVINGTON, N.J. — Authorities say three men are dead following a Christmas morning fight at a U.S. strip club that began when a man apparently tried to enter with a gun but was stopped.

Two other men were wounded in the shooting Wednesday in New Jersey.

Prosecutors say the three men killed include the club owner’s son and an employee. The third has not been identified, but police say he appears to have been an unintended target.

IRVINGTON — The teenager accused of shooting five people, three of them fatally, at an Irvington go-go bar after he was denied access to the club early Christmas morning was arrested at his mother’s home in Florida today, authorities said.

Anthony Fields, 19, was captured by the FBI in Orlando and charged with three counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault after prosecutors said he was the lone gunman in the shooting outside of Slick’s Go-Go bar, said Anthony Ambrose, chief of detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Fields was intoxicated and carrying a firearm when he tried to enter the club about 12:45 a.m. Dec. 25, according to prosecutors and relatives.

A dispute erupted between Fields and bouncer Woodley Daniel, 32, relatives said. When Pierre Clervoyant Jr., a manager at Slick’s and son of the club’s owner, tried to calm things down Fields began shooting, according to police and relatives.

Clervoyant Jr., 34, Daniel and Mushir Cureton, 27, were killed.

Two other people were injured, but Ambrose said they have recovered and may have been released from University Hospital in Newark.

Clervoyant Jr., 34, Daniel and Mushir Cureton, 27, were killed.

Two other people were injured, but Ambrose said they have recovered and may have been released from University Hospital in Newark.

Mass Shooting – Killed – Brandon Varlow (Trenton, NJ)

Brandon Varlow

TRENTON – A shooting in front of a South Ward convenience store last night left a 24-year-old city man dead and four people wounded, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The shooting happened directly in front of the Community Food Market at the intersection of Jersey Street and Home Avenue, Mercer First Assistant Prosecutor Angelo Onofri said this morning.

Just before 10 p.m., a vehicle traveling on Home Avenue stopped directly in front of the store, a prosecutor’s office spokeswoman said. Multiple shots emanated from the vehicle, cutting down Centre Street resident Brandon Varlow, three men and a woman. The car then fled the scene.

Varlow was shot multiple times, the prosecutor’s office said. He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center but pronounced dead there last night.

The people shot alongside Varlow – men 24, 25, and 43 years old and a 25-year-old woman – were taken to area hospitals but all expected to survive, the prosecutor’s office said.

Murder/Suicide – Killed – Midalis Sanchez-Monteagudo (West New York, NJ)

Midalis Sanchez-Monteagudo

The man and woman killed yesterday afternoon in West New York in what officials are calling a murder-suicide were married but were going through a divorce, according to friends of the woman.

They had three children, including a 17-year-old son who was at the scene when his mother was shot in the head by his father, according to Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Gene Rubino.

The woman, who friends have identified as Midalis Sanchez-Monteagudo, 36, of North Bergen, was shot in the head at Solo Nails at Bergenline Avenue and 50th Street at around 5 p.m. yesterday, officials said.

Sanchez-Monteagudo’s husband, who friends have identified as Jose Leonardo Martinez, 39, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound a short time later in the parking lot off Bergenline between 51st and 52nd streets.

“She wanted a divorce and he told her he would ‘kill her, kill the kids and kill himself’,” said Tony Castro, the son of the godfather of the couple’s middle child.

Castro said Martinez had been jailed within the last two months for threatening his wife and that Sanchez-Monteagudo had handed divorce papers to Martinez about two weeks ago.

Killed – Dustin Friedland (Millburn, NJ)

Dustin Friedland

MILLBURN — The 30-year-old man who was shot and killed during a carjacking at The Mall at Short Hills on Sunday night apparently struggled with his attackers shortly before he was killed, law enforcement sources told The Star-Ledger today.

Dustin Friedland, an attorney from Hoboken, tried to fend off the two men who tried to carjack his 2012 silver Range Rover at gunpoint in the mall parking lot around 9:10 p.m. on Sunday, according to the two sources, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

Friedland was shot in the head during the altercation, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray, and he died at Morristown Memorial Medical Center at 11:45 p.m. His wife was with him at the time, but she was not injured, Murray said.

Friedland had opened the front door of the Range Rover for his wife, and was trying to enter the vehicle himself when he was approached by the two carjackers, the sources said.

A struggle ensued, and several shots were fired, including the one that killed Friedland, the sources said. Investigators believe the shooter used a handgun, according to the sources.

NEWARK — Four men have been indicted on charges of killing a Hoboken attorney during a carjacking in December at The Mall at Short Hills, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today.

Basim Henry, 33, of South Orange, Hanif Thompson, 29, of Irvington, and Karif Ford, 32, and Kevin Roberts, 35, both of Newark, were indicted in connection with the Dec. 15, 2013 murder of 30-year-old Dustin Friedland, prosecutors said.

The fatal shooting occurred when the four men carjacked Friedland as he and his wife entered their Range Rover on an upper level parking deck at the upscale mall in the Short Hills section of Millburn, prosecutors said.

Friedland’s widow, Jamie Schare Friedland, is pursuing a lawsuit against the mall’s owners as well as the Universal Protection Service, whose officers patrol the mall, and the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad.

Her lawsuit alleges the mall’s owners knew of the history of carjackings in Essex County and failed to take appropriate action.

Killed – Dixon Rodriguez (Perth Amboy, NJ)

male

PERTH AMBOY – A 32-year-old man shot and killed by police Wednesday afternoon was armed with a knife, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.

Dixon Rodriguez, described by friends as having special needs, encountered two Perth Amboy police officers on Hall Avenue about 1:18 p.m. and attacked one of them with the weapon, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“We have recovered a weapon from the decedent’s hand,” Carey told ABC-TV news.

PERTH AMBOY – Surveillance video of a police-involved shooting in Perth Amboy has been released, 1 and a half years after the fatal shooting.

Dixon Rodriguez was shot and killed by Perth Amboy police officers after a confrontation on Hall Avenue in early December 2013.

In the video released, Rodriguez is seen talking with two officers who were responding a 911 call. Rodriguez gets into a physical altercation with one of the officers and then the other shoots and kills him. Authorities have said Rodriguez was armed with a knife. Rodriguez’s family denies that claim.

PERTH AMBOY – The mother and brother of a special needs man shot and killed by city police officers claim in a recently filed lawsuit that police entered their home after the shooting, took a knife from the kitchen and planted it on the victim’s body.

CAMDEN A Marine Reservist who was trying to break up a fight in a Camden parking lot was shot to death early Sunday.

Camden County Police investigators said Timothy Loper Jr., 27, of Pine Hill, died from a gunshot wound to his back that pierced his heart at Second and Spruce Streets at 2:46 a.m.

According to police, over the course of the investigation, the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force developed leads on the suspect’s whereabouts and then forwarded that information to law enforcement in Florida.

On Thursday, Robert E. Byers, 36, was arrested in Miami and charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Killed – Andrew Murnieks (South Brunswick, NJ)

Andrew Murnieks

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A schizophrenic man who was off his medications barricaded himself in his house for hours and assaulted a police officer before he was shot and killed, authorities said.

Andrew Murnieks, 28, was shot once in the chest around 10:30 p.m. in his Hannah Drive home, said Peter Aseltine, a spokesman for the state Attorney General.

Police had been called to the residence for previous incidents, authorities said.

On Wednesday night they responded to the house about 6:30 p.m. on the report of an emotionally-disturbed person, Aseltine said.

Murnieks’ mother told officers her son was schizophrenic and had not been taking his medications, authorities said.

As police approached the door, Murnieks allegedly opened the front door and raised a large knife in a threatening manner, police said. The officers shut the door, retreated, and notified the county’s Special Operations Response Team.

Over several hours, a negotiator made repeated efforts to resolve the situation, Aseltine added.

But when those efforts failed, the officers entered the residence.

Murnieks allegedly assaulted one of the officers, police said. An officer then fired a single shot which hit the 28-year-old in the chest around 10:30 p.m., authorities said. Murnieks was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick an hour later, they added.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK —A state grand jury has cleared a member of the Middlesex County Special Operations Response Team who fatally shot a South Brunswick man after a four-hour standoff at the man’s house.

The grand jurors “no-billed” the officer Tuesday after hearing “extensive testimony and evidence,” in connection with the death of Andrew Murnieks, 28, in November 2013, according to Acting Attorney General John Hoffman.

The news comes as the Murnieks family’s wrongful death lawsuit against the state, Old Bridge and South Brunswick continues in Superior Court.

Murnieks’s relatives and their attorney could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Murnieks was shot inside his home at 8 Hannah Drive around 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, 2013.

Killed – Abdul Kamal (Irvington, NJ)

Abdul Kamal

Police responding to a domestic violence call shot and killed a New Jersey man who allegedly threatened officers and refused to take his hand out of his pocket at their request.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says a woman called police to say her estranged husband had broken into her apartment on Stanley Street in Irvington around 2 a.m.

When police arrived, they encountered the man, identified as 30-year-old Abdul Kamal, outside the house; he allegedly threatened them while keeping one hand in his pocket and refused to show his hands.

One officer used pepper spray on Kamal, and when he still refused to take his hand out of his pocket, all three of the responding officers fired their service weapons, prosecutors said.

Kamal was pronounced dead at the scene; it wasn’t clear how many times he had been shot.

Kamal, who was a history of domestic violence with his estranged wife, according to authorities, did not have a weapon in his possession. The prosecutor’s office said the police shooting appears to be justified and no charges are expected to be filed against the officers.

NEWARK — Newark activists hit the streets Friday evening after a grand jury failed to indict three police officers in the fatal 2013 shooting of an Irvington man.

The activists marched from the corner of Market and Washington Streets down to the calling jury’s decision not to indict the officers who killed 30-year-old Abdul Kamal an injustice.

“We are outraged by that decision,” said Larry Hamm, chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress. “We can’t understand how that verdict was possibly reached.”

During a confrontation with six responding officers, Kamal began to remove his right hand from his pocket while threatening to shoot police, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement today.

Kamal, who died at the scene, was later found to be unarmed and with only a cell phone in his pocket, authorities said.

Abdul Kamal violated a restraining order and broke into his estranged wife’s Irvington home on Nov. 11, 2013, police said. She fled and called 911, according to police.

Killed – Kaneil Harris (Atlantic County, NJ)

male

EGG HARBOR TWP.— A 22-year-old man was found dead in a hotel in the 6000 block of Black Horse Pike Sunday, according to Channel 6 Action News.

Employees of the Howard Johnson Inn found the body of Kanell Harris at about 11 a.m., authorities said. Harris had been shot to death in a hallway.

George Neewilly, 23, was arrested at a Pleasantville home Sunday, and charged Monday with second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun and fourth-degree aggravated assault with a firearm, said Jim McClain, the acting Atlantic County Prosecutor.

The staff of the Howard Johnson Inn on the Black Horse Pike found the body of Kaneil Harris of Atlantic City on Sunday morning.

During the course of the homicide investigation, detectives determined a handgun had been fired into a hotel room near where Harris’s body was found, McClain said. Neewilly was connected to that gunshot, and charged, the prosecutor added.

However, Neewilly has not been charged in Harris’s death.

male

UNION COUNTY – A weeklong, multicounty search for two Jersey City men wanted in connection with a 2013 homicide in Rahway has ended with the apprehension of both, according to acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park.

Ericdelman Vega, 36, also known as “Editto,” was arrested Thursday afternoon following a routine traffic stop near the Jersey City entrance to the Holland Tunnel, two days after Alexis Vazquez, 37, turned himself in to authorities in Elizabeth.

Vega is charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses, while Vazquez is charged with second-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree tampering with evidence in connection with the shooting death of Jorge Torres, 27, of Newark.

At about 3 a.m. Nov. 10, Rahway Police Department officers responded to reports of shots being fired in the vicinity of the Breathless men’s club on the 800 block of Hart Street in Rahway. An injured Torres was found seated in a vehicle parked just outside the entrance to the building’s parking lot, according to Union County Homicide Task Force Supervisor Michael Henn. Torres was pronounced dead at the scene.

A seven-month investigation involving the Homicide Task Force and the Rahway Police Department resulted in the two defendants being identified as suspects, and charges against them were filed late last week.
