Mass Shooting – Killed – John Kohler (Barberton, OH)

John Kohler1

Two men have been arrested in connection with the New Year’s Eve shooting deaths of a Barberton father and his two teenage children.

Michael Deon Hendon, 22, and Eric Donta Hendon, 30, both of Akron, were arrested Friday on three counts each of aggravated murder.

Additional charges, including a potential death penalty specification indictment, will be considered when the case is reviewed later this month by a Summit County grand jury.

The arrests came on the same day that John Kohler, the Barberton father whose home was targeted by armed robbers on New Year’s Eve, died of apparent gunshot wounds.

He was shot in the home invasion burglary that also claimed the life of his 18-year-old stepdaughter, Ashley Carpenter, and his son, David Kohler Carpenter, 14.

Kohler’s girlfriend, Ronda Blankenship, 38, survived the shooting and is recovering at an area hospital.

Autopsies this week showed that Ashley died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Her brother, David, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He also suffered defensive wounds to his arms, reports show. They were found together in a back bedroom.

The haunting 911 call from a Barberton woman paints a picture of the aftermath of a shooting New Year’s Eve that left her and her boyfriend wounded and his two teenage children dead.

“Help, help,” a wounded Ronda Blankenship pleads to a dispatcher in the conversation released Thursday by Southwest Summit Communications. “I’m bleeding everywhere … my boyfriend is here. I have two kids here … Help, help, help. Oh God.”

The teens were visiting their father, John Kohler, 42, at his 7th Street Northeast home on New Year’s Eve.

His girlfriend, Rhonda Blankenship, 38, was also shot, but survived.

A call for help was made around 6:50 p.m.

Hendon and his brother, Eric Hendon, 32, are accused of breaking into a 7th Street S.W. home in order to steal drugs and money, according to police.

Killed – Eric M. Wheeler (Springfield, OH)

Eric M. Wheeler

SPRINGFIELD — A Northeastern High School graduate died after a shooting that a 911 caller said was an accident, but officers investigating the incident could need weeks to complete their work, Springfield’s police chief said Tuesday.

Eric M. Wheeler, 22, died Monday afternoon from injuries sustained when he was shot in the abdomen at a southeast Springfield house.

No charges have been filed, according to the Springfield Police Division.

Authorities were alerted to the shooting at 3:29 p.m. at 932 Barker Drive, about one mile from the Burnett Plaza Shopping Center.

A man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing his friend while they were drinking inside of a Springfield home received a three-year prison sentence on Friday.

Dustin Olwin, 29, of 932 Barker Drive, pleaded guilty June 17 to involuntary manslaughter, a third-degree felony. In exchange for the guilty plea, charges of reckless homicide, negligent homicide and using weapons while intoxicated were dismissed.

Olwin was charged in connection with the December 2013 shooting death of his friend Eric M. Wheeler. Wheeler was shot and killed while the two were drinking and hanging out at Olwin’s home.
In a 9-1-1 call from the night of the shooting, a woman on the phone with dispatchers said they were “screwing around” with guns when Wheeler was “accidentally” shot in the abdomen.

Killed – Jason Canan (Ravenna, OH)

Jason Canan

A Windham Township man is being held in the Portage County jail without bond, charged in the murder of his nephew who was found dead in the house they shared on South Chapel Street on Christmas Day.

Joseph E. Thornton, 48, of 9889 S. Chapel St., is charged with murder, an unclassified felony, according to Portage County Sheriff David Doak. He will be arraigned today in Portage County Municipal Court in Ravenna.

Doak said emergency dispatchers received a call at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday from a relative of Jason R. Canan, 39, who lived with his uncle in the P M Estates Mobile Home Park on the north side of state Route 82, halfway between Garrettsville and Windham.

The relative reported being told that Canan may have been shot inside the residence, Doak said. Sheriff’s deputies, accompanied by Garrettsville police officers, responded to the residence and found Canan’s body inside. He had been shot and killed, Doak said.

Investigation led deputies to question Thornton in his nephew’s murder, and he was officially charged with murder Thursday morning, Doak said. The investigation is continuing, with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification, he said.

Hocking County Coroner tells 10TV that Phillip Loschiavo, 30, was pronounced dead at Grant Medical Center at 7:53 p.m. Friday.

On Christmas evening around 6 p.m., police say Loschaivo shot and killed Teresa Bickley, 30, in the parking lot of Hocking Mall in Logan.

Bickley died at the scene.

Loschiavo then shot himself. He was rushed to Grant Medical Center in critical condition at the time.

Bickley went along to support Loshaivo’s wife. His wife was not injured in the shooting.

After Loschaivo died, an autopsy was performed Saturday morning. the Hocking County coroner confirms the cause of death as “complications from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Killed – Rande Neff (Whitehall, OH)

Rande Neff1

The death of a man found shot inside his Whitehall condominium on Tuesday evening was being investigated as a homicide, Whitehall police said.

Officers found the body of Rande Neff, 48, inside his condo at 428 Shell Court W. after they responded to a 911 call from someone who was asking officers to check on Neff. He was shot at least once, Sgt. John Grebb said in a news release yesterday morning.

Whitehall police continue to investigate a homicide discovered Christmas Eve at a Shell Court West apartment.

Whitehall Sgt. John Grebb said police have no viable suspects in the city’s second homicide of 2013.

Police discovered the body of Rande Neff, 48, at 9:33 p.m. Dec. 24 inside his apartment at 428 Shell Court W.

Acquaintances of Neff called and asked police to check on Neff, who had not recently been seen, Grebb said.

“(Neff) was estranged from his family,” Grebb said, and it is not known precisely when he was last seen alive.

Grebb said acquaintances asked police to check to the residence after having no contact with Neff for a lengthy period of time.

Police found no signs of forced entry.

“(Neff) died from at least one gunshot wound,” Grebb said.

A coroner’s report is pending to determine how long Grebb was dead prior to police finding the body.

Killed – Diana Fields-Edmonds (Cleveland, OH)

Diana Fields-Edmonds

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 38-year-old Cleveland woman was shot about 3 a.m. and pushed from a car on East 83rd Street near Woodland Avenue, police said.

Police were called and found the woman in the street. She was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she died.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Diana Fields-Edmonds.

She was a passenger in a vehicle at the time of the shooting, which occurred on East 83rd, police spokeswoman Jennifer Ciaccia said.

“At some point between Cedar and Woodland avenues, shots were fired from outside the vehicle,” Ciaccia said. “The victim was then pushed from the vehicle, along with her purse, and the driver left the scene.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cleveland man was sentenced to life without parole for the vicious slaying of his wife, whom he shot twice then dumped her body in the street and drove over it with her car.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose ordered Antonio Hicks, 36, to prison in the slaying of Diana Fields-Edmonds on Dec. 21. Within moments of Ambrose’s sentence, family members of Fields-Edmonds clapped and one yelled, “There is a God.”

The sentence came after a two-week trial in which a jury convicted Hicks on Thursday of aggravated murder, felonious assault and weapons charges. Hicks told Ambrose that he didn’t shoot his wife.

Killed – Terria Nettles (Cleveland, OH)

Terria Nettles

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a Cleveland woman shot dead Wednesday on the city’s East Side.

Terria Nettles, 21, was shot in the head after an unknown gunman opened fire about 10:30 p.m. near the 4100 block of East 146th Street, officials said.

Nettles was riding in the passenger seat of a car when the driver pulled into a driveway in an attempt to turn around. Witnesses heard multiple shots fired, police said.

A single round struck Nettles. She was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she died from skull and brain injuries, according to the medical examiner’s office.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A case of mistaken identity has landed two men in prison for life for the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old woman in December.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy McDonnell on Monday sentenced David Baker, 28, of Bedford Heights to life in prison with the first chance of parole in 37 years. She sentenced Chevarre Young, 26, of Cincinnati to life in prison with the chance of parole in 36 years. McDonnell sentenced the men after they pleaded guilty in the slaying of Terria Nettles, 21.

Nettles was with two friends on Dec. 18. They were driving to another friend’s house on East 146th Street, but they drove past the correct address.

Nettles pulled into a driveway to turn around, said Joe Frolik, a spokesman for Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty.

Before she could pull the car out of the driveway, Baker and Young left the porch of a home and began shooting at the car, Frolik said. Nettles was struck once in the head and died.

Baker fired several shots from a .38-caliber handgun, while Young fired some from a .44-caliber, according to interviews and court records.

Nettles did not know the men. But authorities said the men believed someone was after them.

When they noticed a car driving slowly and turning in to a home on East 146th Street about 10:45 p.m., they panicked and came out with their guns drawn and began firing.

Double Shooting – Killed – Michael A. Sibert Jr. (Cleveland, OH)

male

Maurice Fountain, who was shot during a robbery in Canton on Dec. 13, died of gunshot wounds to the left cheek and neck with skeletal, vascular and soft tissue injuries.

Fountain was at the home of 19-year-old Michael Sibert Jr. on Alan Page Drive when three people entered the home and attempted to rob the two men, according to a Canton police release. One of the men shot Sibert, who was able to return fire and hit the shooter in the face, forcing the other two men to flee, Canton police said.

Fountain also was shot during the encounter, and was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center by helicopter. Sibert was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Her son, 19-year-old Michael A. Sibert Jr., was killed Dec. 13 during a robbery at his apartment on Alan Page Drive SE. Since then, the mother has missed giving him hugs and kisses, ones she planned to shower him with until he was an old man.

The small cross dangled over her chest Tuesday when she sat in court and watched two teenagers — Amir G. Eppinger and David D. Sharp — admit to their roles in his death and get sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Each teenager pleaded guilty to complicity to involuntary manslaughter. The charge had been amended from complicity to murder as part of a plea agreement.

Under the plea deal, Eppinger and Sharp agreed to testify against another codefendant in the case, Marcus R. Cobb, 27, who is charged with complicity to murder.

According to court records, Maurice Fountain, 16, of Cleveland, shot Sibert, who died at the scene, police said.

Sharp, Eppinger and Fountain struggled with Sibert’s friend, who was at the apartment, according to court records. Fountain died Dec. 21 from gunshot injuries sustained during the robbery, police said.

Canton police responded to 643 Alan Page Drive S.E. at approximately 6:08 p.m. Friday regarding a shooting casualty.

Killed – William Wolf (Colerain Township, OH)

male

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio —Colerain Township police made quick work of an early morning homicide investigation, taking a suspect into custody within hours.

Officers were called to the 5700 block of Springdale Road shortly after 1:30 a.m. after William Wolf, 50, was found in the parking lot of a business.

Investigators said the the deadly shooting happened outside the Club Trio Lounge. Colerain Township police said they had ‘good leads’ on a suspect just hours after the shooting.

Those leads led to Patrick Kraus, 37, being taken into custody a short time later.

Patrick Kraus was so haunted by his military action in Iraq and Afghanistan that he couldn’t comprehend why shooting and killing a man in December in a Colerain Township parking lot was wrong.

After two doctors testified to that Monday, Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Charles Kubicki Jr. declared Kraus not guilty by reason of insanity before his Monday murder trial.

Instead, Kraus, 38, of Colerain Township, will be sent to Summit Behavioral Healthcare, the Roselawn mental health facility, for treatment.

“He has severe post traumatic stress disorder,” one of his attorneys, Norm Aubin, said after Monday’s ruling.

Kraus, Aubin said, was in the U.S. Marines and then joined the U.S. Army to serve as a Ranger. His job in Afghanistan and Iraq was to be the first soldier through the door when hunting for terrorists. “He got help at the VA (Veterans Administration) but never got any better,” Aubin said,

That was unfortunate for William Wolf, the man Kraus beat and then shot and killed Dec. 13 in the parking lot of Trio Lounge in the 5700 block of Springdale Road. Court documents note Kraus approached Wolf in the early morning hours in the parking lot. Kraus punched Wolf and knocked him to the ground and then jumped on Wolf and pummeled him with punches.

Kraus then pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot and killed Wolf before driving away.

Double Shooting – Killed – Kenneth Herring (Columbus, OH)

Kenneth Herring

A South Side man who was killed by Columbus police early yesterday had shot and wounded his girlfriend three hours earlier and might have wanted officers to shoot him, police and a family spokesman say.

Kenneth R. Herring, 50, was shot repeatedly when police confronted him just after midnight on the porch of a home at 719 S. 17th St.

Police did not release details of the confrontation but said five officers fired their weapons while trying to take Herring into custody. He died at the scene at 12:14 a.m.

Division spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said a tip had led police to the house, where Herring apparently knew at least one person. Four people inside and the officers were not hurt.

Police found a gun at the scene, but Weiner would not say where. It was the 21st shooting by division police this year and the seventh fatal one.

Police had been searching for Herring on Wednesday night in connection with an earlier shooting at 1196 Lockbourne Rd.

Officers were called to that address at 9 p.m. by the mother of Richell Dixon.

“My daughter’s been shot twice by her boyfriend,” she said in her call to 911. “Please hurry.” She identified Herring as the shooter and said he was running south on Lockbourne toward Marion Road.

Dixon, 44, was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Police said yesterday that her condition has stabilized and she is expected to survive.

The Dec. 12, 2013 shooting occurred just after midnight when five police officers fired on Kenneth R. Herring, 50, on the porch of a home at 719 S. 17th St.

Herring, who was killed by the officers, had shot and wounded his girlfriend three hours earlier at a South Side home. Plainclothes officers had received a tip that Herring was at the S. 17th Street address.

Killed – Krystal Barrows (Ross County, OH)

Krystal Barrows

CHILLICOTHE – A Ross County grand jury did not return a secret indictment for Ross County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brett McKnight in the accidental death of Krystal Barrows.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office met with the grand jury Friday, said Jill Del Greco, spokeswoman for the state office. The case is now closed because the grand jury did not return the indictment.

Details of the grand jury’s decision are secret under Ohio law, Del Greco said. She could not comment on McKnight’s future with the Ross County Sheriff’s Office.

Barrows, 35, was killed during service of a warrant Dec. 11, 2013, when McKnight’s gun inadvertently fired. Barrows was struck by a bullet during the no-knock search warrant at a residence off U.S. 23 South when the single round was fired as law enforcement entered.

She died the next day in a Columbus hospital.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation later determined the round had come from a submachine gun held by McKnight, who reported he never realized the gun had fired. A shell casing was found just outside the home, and evidence showed the bullet had passed through the home from the outside before hitting Barrows.

In the release, Ross County Sheriff George Lavender’s office said that members of the U.S. 23 Task Force were executing a search warrant about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday at a trailer at 467 Rt. 23 S. near Chillicothe. The release said they expected to find large amounts of heroin, several weapons and a guard holding an assault rifle at the front door.

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of a woman killed during a Ross County drug raid last December. According to documents filed Friday at the Ross County Courthouse, the suit has been filed against Ross County Sheriff George Lavender, Sgt. Brett McKnight and Ross County.

They are accused of negligence in the death of Krystal M. Barrows, who was mortally wounded in a drug raid when law enforcement entered the residence December 11th. She died the following day.

A subsequent investigation found Sgt. McKnight’s weapon discharged when a concussion grenade was tossed into the residence as tactical entry teams were entering.

Double Murder – Killed – Darnell Green (Toledo, OH)

Darnell Green

The two men who were shot and killed in North Toledo on Monday night were each shot in the head.

Darnell Green, 23, was shot a total of seven times — his wounds were to the head, torso, and both arms, said Lucas County Deputy Coroner Dr. Maneesha Pandey.

John Hill, 25, suffered only the gunshot wound to the head.

Both deaths are homicides and toxicology tests are pending, Dr. Pandey said.

Toledo police said at least 10 shots were fired into 25 E. Pearl St., in North Toledo, where several people were hanging out.

Sgt. Joe Heffernan said all of the shots were fired from outside the residence and both victims were found dead inside.

Sergeant Heffernan said the shots were fired through a glass-paneled door.

The plan Monday night was to finally record a tribute song to memorialize Darnell Green’s cousin.

Green and several friends met up at 25 E. Pearl St., where they planned to cut the track and have an otherwise quiet evening.

At 8:25 p.m., police were dispatched to the North Toledo home on a report of two people shot. When they arrived, they found Green, 23, and John Hill, 25, dead.

Killed – Goran Sojic (Dayton, OH)

male

DAYTON — The Love’s Travel Stop security guard who shot and killed an unarmed truck driver will not be indicted, a Montgomery County grand jury ruled.

The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday that neither Joshua Karp, 25, nor anyone else would face charges in the death of 48-year-old Goran Sojic. Karp fired multiple times at Sojic on Dec. 8, 2013 at the new truck stop on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard.

A press release from the prosecutor’s office said that Sojic, “while speaking a foreign language, charged at an armed, uniformed security guard behind the enclosed cash register area, and refused his commands to stop, which caused the security guard to fear for his life, as well as the safety of others inside the establishment.”

The release said the grand jury considered evidence after a lengthy Dayton police investigation and testimony from 12 witnesses. Those witnesses included police officers, an EMS responder, and civilian employees of both the Love’s Travel Stop and the Hardee’s Restaurant which are located inside the same building. The grand jury also heard forensic evidence gathered from ballistics testing, autopsy findings, toxicology testing and from security surveillance video.

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The family of a man shot and killed by a security guard at the Love’s Travel Stop in Dayton has filed a lawsuit.

Dayton Police say 48-year-old Goran Sojic from Illinois was killed by 25-year-old security guard Joshua Karp in December.

Karp claims Sojic came at him so he acted in self-defense, but now Sojic’s family said that was not the case.

2 NEWS Investigates first told you, security guard, Joshua Karp should not have had a gun while on the job the night he shot and killed Sojic. The state told us they hadn’t fully processed his application. Now, the family of the man killed is using that same information to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday, police officers responded to Love’s Travel Center at 2217 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd. where they found Sojic shot in the chest and the arm.
