PINELLAS PARK — Gerald Way was hanging out at his uncle’s house when his phone rang.
The caller asked him to step outside, according to a friend who was at the house.
Way, 24, stepped into the driveway at 5021 69th Ave. N. Moments later, a shot rang out, said friend Tiffany Veysey.
She and others ran outside and found Way lying face-down near the roadside mailbox with a bullet wound just above his hip.
Way died early Friday morning from the single shot to the abdomen, according to Pinellas Park Police.
Officers responded to a call for the shooting about 12:53 a.m.
PINELLAS PARK — A St. Petersburg woman is facing a first degree murder charge for allegedly setting up a drug deal that resulted in a fatal shooting Friday, police said Tuesday afternoon.
Mariah Jordan Bell, 22, was arrested Monday morning by Pinellas Park police. She reportedly admitted to detectives that she orchestrated a drug deal on Friday that ended with the killing of Gerald Way, 24, outside a home on 69th Avenue N, according to an arrest report.
Officers responded to 5021 69th Ave. N shortly before 1 a.m. Friday. Way had been shot once in the abdomen, and his friends and relatives had transported him to a hospital in the back of a truck.
Bell told police she had arranged to purchase oxycodone from Way, according to the arrest report. She allegedly arrived at the house in Pinellas Park with another man, who is still at large. Way had stolen several hundred dollars from the man weeks before the shooting, the arrest report shows.
