Double Murder – Killed – Donivan K Walker Jr. (Hampton, VA)

Donivan K Walker Jr.

Two men are dead and a 16-year-old suspect is in custody following a shooting incident at the Woodland Skateboard Park this afternoon.

Officers were called to the park in the area of Woodland Road and Mercury Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m. and found the two victims. One died at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital, but died about an hour later, according to a Hampton police news release.

The victims were identified by police late tonight as Donivan K. Walker Jr., 21, of Hampton, and Kenneth J. Wilson, 20, of Hampton.

The shooting occurred after an altercation, said Cpl. Mary Shackelford, a police spokeswoman. The shooter left the park after the fight and returned a short time later with the firearm, the police news release said. Both men were shot and the shooter fled the scene on a moped.

At 4:06 p.m., Hampton police received a call about a stolen Jeep Liberty from the 1700 block of Newton Road. The suspect in the carjacking matched the description of the shooter at the park, police said. Less than 10 minutes later, the stolen vehicle was spotted in the area of Shelton and Grimes roads. There was a short vehicle pursuit that ended when the 16-year-old suspect from Hampton was taken into custody at the VA Medical Center about 4:20 p.m. without incident.

The identity of the suspect was not released by police because of his age. He was charged with first-degree murder, capital murder, grand larceny of a firearm, carjacking, felony evade and elude, possession of a firearm by a juvenile and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was being held at Newport News juvenile secure detention.

Killed – Thomas Michael Harris (Sussex County, VA)

male

A Disputanta hunter has died of injuries he suffered Monday in a deer hunting accident in Sussex County, authorities said.

Thomas Michael Harris, 61, died at 10:40 a.m. today at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, said Lee Walker, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, which is investigating the incident.

The shooting occurred about 1:40 p.m. Monday during a hunt club outing near U.S. 460 and Georgetown Road outside of Waverly.

Walker said members of hunt club, which included Harris and the shooter, were driving deer with hunting dogs. At one point, a deer ran through the area and a hunter fired his shotgun and struck Harris – who was standing beyond the deer – in the back of the head.

Killed – Sheena Green (Henrico County, VA)

Sheena Green

A Henrico County woman who was fatally wounded Sunday in Richmond had sought a protective order last week against the suspect in her death, claiming he had threatened to kill her.

The woman, Sheena Green, 26, requested a protective order Dec. 23 against Corenzo Laroscoe Hill, the father of her two children, according to court records in Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

That day, Green wrote in an affidavit for the protective order that Hill kept “putting his hands on me and saying he’s going to kill me. This is not the first time this done happened.”

But Green’s petition for the protective order was dismissed because she failed to appear that day at a preliminary protective order hearing, according to court records.

Green was found about 5:30 a.m. Sunday lying on the ground in a wooded area in the 2700 block of Richmond-Henrico Turnpike in the city’s North Side.

She had been shot, run over by a vehicle and left for dead, according to a source familiar with the case.

She was taken to VCU Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

A Henrico County man who left the mother of his two children bleeding from gunshot wounds and then ran over her with her car will serve 26 years in prison.

Corenzo Hill, 31, of the 3700 block of Conway Street, entered a no-contest plea Tuesday morning in Richmond Circuit Court to second-degree murder as part of an agreement that resolves a brutal murder preceded by issues of domestic violence. Hill had been indicted on first-degree murder, abduction and firearms charges and faced a life sentence.

Murder/Suicide – Killed – Tammy Black (Virginia Beach, VA)

Tammy Black

UPDATE 12/23: Police identified the suspect as 45-year-old Dennie Black and the victim as 45-year-old Tammy Black of the 3500 block of Shore Drive.

Dennie Black has been an instructor at the Navy’s regional training academy for law enforcement since July 2011, Navy officials told 13News Now.

VIRGINIABEACH — A husband and wife died Sunday afternoon after they got into a fight at The Chesapeake House on Shore Drive, near the Lesner Bridge.

Police said they got a call about a firearms violation at about 3:30 p.m. When they got to the apartments, they cleared the complex and found a woman dead inside an apartment. Later, they found her husband’s body outside of the building.

Officers said that the situation grew from a domestic altercation between the couple.

On Sunday, Dennie Black had a different message. At 12:30, he posted on Facebook that the truth about his marriage was about to come out. “Tammy, I hope you’re happy!” he wrote.

Three hours later, both were dead. Dennie Black, 45, is believed to have shot his wife at the condo they had shared off Shore Drive. Then he shot himself and fell off the sixth-floor balcony, according to police reports and the medical examiner’s office.

Friends and family, who say the shooting came after months of turmoil, are questioning events leading to the deaths. On Sunday, friends say, police took Tammy Black, 43, to a magistrate so she could seek an emergency protective order against her husband.

Michelle Bryant, Tammy Black’s sister, said her sister called on Sunday, telling her she was on her way to the magistrate and admitting that she was scared to go. Black called back a little while later to say her request had been denied.

In October, Tammy Black decided she wanted to end the marriage, Bryant said, and they started the divorce process. Dennie Black had moved out of their condo at the Chesapeake House.

Cindy Banwarth, Tammy Black’s friend, said Tammy Black told her that her husband was abusive and had threatened to kill her and himself. Banwarth said Tammy Black didn’t want to report him to police because of fear of what it would do to his career.

Killed – Jayson Syrkes (Spotsylvania, VA)

Jayson Syrkes

Two Spotsylvania teenagers charged in the fatal shooting of another teen will be tried as adults.
The Free Lance-Star reported that a Spotsylvania Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court judge certified the charges against 17-year-old Steven Foster and 15-year-old Douglas Hayes on Wednesday. Judge Philip Fines sent the case to the grand jury.

Police found the body of 18-year-old Jayson Marquis Syrkes last December along a wood line behind his home in Spotsylvania.

Steven Ray Foster Jr. will be 46 years old when he is expected to be released from prison in 2044.
The 16-year-old was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison with all but 30 years suspended in Spotsylvania County Circuit Court.

Foster was one of two county teens charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jayson Marquis Syrkes, 18, in the Sylvania Heights area in December.

Foster also received a 20-year suspended sentence for statutory burglary.

A law enforcement officer reported that his home was broken into on Dec. 1 and six firearms were stolen, along with some loose change. Foster was considered a suspect a day before the shooting because the officer’s neighbors had seen him knocking on doors there, the agreement said.

Then on Dec. 7, Michael Dunivan called police after he heard a gunshot behind his home on Mansfield Street off Tidewater Trail and saw two boys running away toward the River Heights trailer park. Dunivan later learned that it was his grandson who was shot.

According to the agreement, 17-year-old Douglas “Dougie” Hayes and Foster arranged to meet with Syrkes to sell him one of the stolen guns, a Glock 9 mm, for $100.

When the teens met, Foster showed Syrkes a different gun. Foster told police he pulled out the clip, pushed it back in, then pulled the trigger.

Syrkes was struck in the face at close range and was dead by the time police arrived. Police said Syrkes had a $50 bill in his pocket.

According to the agreement, Hayes told police that he wiped down the gun and threw it over a fence near a white shed on Christopher Court.

Officers and tracking dogs searched the area, and Foster and Hayes were both apprehended within an hour of the shooting.

Jayson Syrkes, 18, was found shot to death in the woods behind some homes in the Sylvania Heights area of Spotsylvania, Va., Saturday afternoon, and two teenagers have been charged.

Killed – Joe Ray Rumfelt (Alleghany County, VA)

male

Second-degree murder charges against two Covington men have been certified to an Alleghany County Circuit Court grand jury.

The charges against Casey Shane Gillispie, 22, and Dustin Thomas McClear, 21, were certified Thursday by Alleghany County General District Court Judge J. Gregory Mooney.

The two have been charged in the December death of 71-year-old Joe Ray Rumfelt of Selma.

Rumfelt’s body was discovered by a relative Dec. 3 in the living room of his home in the 1400 block of Donovan Street. An autopsy concluded that he died of a gunshot wound and blunt, forced trauma.

McLear was arrested and charged with Rumfelt’s murder Dec. 7. Gillespie was taken into custody Dec. 9. Since their arrests, both have been held at the Alleghany Regional Jail in Covington without bond.

Testimony during Thursday’s preliminary hearing indicated that Rumfelt’s murder was a robbery gone awry.

McLear and Gillispie allegedly told Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office investigators that they originally planned to rob the Clifton Forge Pizza Hut Dec. 1., only to change their minds after noticing a number of vehicles parked at the restaurant.

“They decided that the Pizza Hut was too busy to take the chance because there were too many people,” Sgt. David Williams of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office said during testimony Thursday.

With their plan to rob Pizza Hut foiled, they turned their attention to Rumfelt, whom they had sold antiques to just prior to Thanksgiving.

In statements to Williams following their arrests, McLear and Gillispie said their initial plan was to get Rumfelt to the door and rob him after striking him in the head.

“Casey said they were supposed to hit Mr. Rumfelt, take the money, and leave,” Williams said.

After their initial attempt to contact Rumfelt failed, they went back to the house a second time and gained entry and told Rumfelt they wanted to sell him a BB-gun.

Once inside the kitchen area of the house, Gillispie allegedly pulled out a .22-caliber revolver and demanded money from Rumfelt. Rumfelt refused to hand over money and chased Gillipsie into the living room. While in the living room, Gillispie allegedly shot Rumfelt and beat him three times with a dumbbell, weighing 15 to 20 pounds. That scenario is based on statements made by McLear to investigators.

The two suspects fled the scene, but returned a third time to steal items from Rumfelt’s house, including two guns. Both guns were later recovered by police.
McLear and Gillispie both face felony charges of buying or receiving stolen goods.

Killed – Sue Hutson (Chesapeake, VA)

female

A 19-year-old woman charged with killing her mother was arraigned Monday on one count of first-degree murder.

Rachel Hutson is to be arraigned on a related firearm charge today in General District Court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Jan. 9 in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Police responded about 3:45 a.m. Friday to the Hutsons’ Indian River home for a report of a shooting, according to a police spokesman. They found 58-year-old Susan Hutson dead inside.

Chesapeake, Va. – A Chesapeake woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder and weapons charges in the 2013 death of her mother.

Hutson was 19 years old when she was charged with murdering her own mother Susan Hutson. The crime occurred at their Osborn Avenue home the day after Thanksgiving in 2013.

According to the medical examiner’s report, 58-year-old Susan Hutson died from a shotgun blast to the chest at close range.

Her defense attorney argued she had a history of mental illness that had gone undiagnosed for years. However, in late 2014, a judge determined that Hutson was competent to stand trial.

She pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony during a hearing on Tuesday.

Killed – Rodney Beanum Jr (Fredericksburg, VA)

male

(WJLA) – Two young men are under arrest in connection to the shooting death in a man in Fredericksburg, authorities say, but a search continues for the person who pulled the trigger.

The shooting happened at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1900 block of Howard Avenue, Fredericksburg Police say, where Rodney Beanum Jr. was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Beanum, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later Sunday, authorities arrested and charged Travon Thomas, 23, and Delante White, 22, with obstruction of justice. Both are free on bond.

A man who was part of the robbery that resulted in the brutal slaying of Fredericksburg resident Rodney Beanum Jr. last year was ordered Friday to serve eight years in prison.

Diontae T. Washington, 23, of Richmond pleaded guilty in Fredericksburg Circuit Court to robbery and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to a total of 38 years with all but eight years suspended.

Washington’s sentence was identical to the one received last month by 20-year-old Lorenzo M. Jones of Richmond.

Washington and Jones were both key prosecution witnesses against the other two co-defendants in the Beanum case, Wesley Carlton Smith and John Pegram.

Smith and Pegram have already been convicted of charges connected to Beanum’s death and have sentencings pending.

Beanum, known as “J.R.” and “King Tweezy,” was shot multiple times in the back of the head while lying face down on Howard Avenue in Mayfield early Nov. 24, 2013. Commonwealth’s Attorney LaBravia Jenkins and prosecution witnesses all identified Smith as the shooter, but a jury convicted him only of two counts of robbery and conspiracy and recommended that he serve 25 years in prison.

According to testimony, the four defendants had been hanging out in Stafford and Fredericksburg Nov. 23 when they hatched a plan to commit a robbery.

They went to Jay’s Lounge in Fredericksburg to seek out a target. Beanum was chosen at the recommendation of Smith, witnesses said, and the group followed him to Mayfield.

After Beanum let out one passenger, he and Delante White were surrounded by armed men, beaten and robbed. Washington and Jones said there was no plan to kill anyone.

Jones’ BMW was shot up as the suspects fled the scene, and police found his car nearby in Mayfield. That led police to Jones and Washington, who later agreed to testify against Smith and Pegram.

Killed – Eric N. Wilkins Jr. (Ettrick, VA)

Eric N. Wilkins Jr.

ETTRICK, Va. (WTVR) — A Virginia State University student was shot and killed at the University Apartments near campus Thursday night.

Eric Wilkins, 22, of Hopewell, was a junior at the school, a VSU spokesman confirmed Friday morning.

Wilkins was shot during a verbal altercation with another person at the complex located half-a-mile from campus along the 4000 block of J. Mitchell Jones Drive. The shooting happened about 11:30 Thursday night. Wilkins’ body was discovered outside in the area of a parking lot and sidewalk.

ETTRICK – Police arrested Brian W. Williams Jr., 19, of Hopewell, on Friday afternoon in the shooting death of Eric N. Wilkins, 22. Williams was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Chesterfield County and VSU police are jointly investigating the shooting. Williams is being held without bond at Chesterfield County Jail.

Chesterfield police Lt. David Shand said investigators believe Wilkins was likely in the wrong place during a dispute that didn’t involve him. The fight occurred outside an apartment where a party of 30 to 40 people was being held, Shand said.

A friend of a Chester teen charged with fatally shooting a Virginia State University student during an off-campus party in November testified Tuesday that the defendant told him after they both had fled the scene that he had messed up and fired shots.

Lamar Perry, a prosecution witness, testified in Chesterfield County General District Court that he and another young man were with defendant Bryan W. Williams Jr. when a dispute erupted during a late-night party Nov. 21 at the University Apartments at Ettrick, 4000 block of J. Mitchell Jones Drive.

Perry said he, Williams and Khayan Curry were there about 20 minutes when a physical altercation occurred as they were leaving. Perry testified that someone among the 30 to 40 young partygoers brushed past him and pushed down Curry, his friend.

Perry said Williams, 19, then grabbed him, saying, “Let them get their one-on-one on.” But Perry said he then shook himself free of Williams and was about to join the fight — presumably to help his friend — when he heard shots.

At least one round struck VSU student Eric N. Wilkins Jr., 22, in the back, and he died at the scene. Police said Wilkins was a bystander and an unintended victim of the violence.

Double Shooting – Killed – Jannine Parisi (Chantilly, VA)

Jannine Parisi

CHANTILLY, Va. (WJLA) – A man and a woman were killed early Wednesday morning inside their Chantilly home, police say, and authorities are looking for answers about why they died.

Jannine Parisi, 47, and Paul Parisi, 46, were both found dead in the home on Point Pleasant Drive at about 5 a.m. Wednesday, Fairfax County Police say.

Authorities were called to the home on reports of shots fired, and upon arrival, first responders found the bodies of both victims.

Police say two teenagers were inside the home when they heard gunshots. The teens then ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

Police say it appears to be a domestic situation and that there is no threat to the public. Neighbors say the family moved into the home four years ago. Neighbors also say there was a police car and an ambulance at the home a few days ago.

Two teen girls inside the home at the time heard the gunshots and fled to a nearby home in the 13400 block of Point Pleasant Drive, where someone called 911.

Paul Parisi had a two-decade career with the ATF and was most recently assigned to the Washington Field Division’s arson and explosives group, according to the bureau. Jannine Parisi was a health and physical education teacher at Franklin Middle School in Chantilly, according to the county school system.

Killed – Joshua Hathaway (Lynchburg, VA)

Joshua Hathaway

No criminal charges will be filed against a Liberty University security officer who fatally shot a student in November, according to a report released Thursday.

The report, prepared by Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Jeff Bennett, states security officer A. S. Mulberry acted in self-defense when he shot 19-year-old Liberty University student Joshua Hathaway on Nov. 19 at a residential annex off Odd Fellows Road.

The report states Mulberry told investigators he was sitting at the front desk of Annex II at about 4 a.m., eating a meal, when Hathaway entered the lobby. Hathaway had blood trickling from his face and told Mulberry he had been mugged and his car stolen.

Mulberry asked Hathaway to sit down as he retrieved the first-aid kit from his vehicle. As Mulberry encouraged him to sit, Hathaway’s “demeanor changed entirely and he said, ‘Sir, I have a problem,’” Bennett wrote in his report.

Hathaway then revealed a yellow-handled mallet from beneath his shirt. Mulberry stepped back to “create space” when he tripped and fell.

“As he got back to his feet, Hathaway was closing in with the mallet raised to strike,” Bennett wrote.

Mulberry and Hathaway fought, falling against the front desk countertop, when Mulberry forced Hathaway to drop the mallet.

Even without the mallet, Hathaway “continued to attack,” Bennett wrote.

“Mulberry felt Hathaway ‘starting to claw at his neck,’” according to the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Amid the fight, Mulberry struggled to radio for help, not realizing it had switched off the police channel during the brawl.

Hathaway reached for the pistol at Mulberry’s hip. The two wrestled to the ground, Hathaway on top, as Mulberry tried to buck him off.

“I knew if I did not get him off me I was dead,” Mulberry told investigators.

Back on his feet, Mulberry drew his pistol to fire at the student.

“The gun clicked but did not discharge,” Bennett wrote.

Mulberry fought to shove Hathaway back while loading a bullet into the chamber.

The officer fired two rounds in quick succession, a standard maneuver called a “double tap.” Hathaway paused and collapsed to the floor and said “All right, I’m done, I’m done,” Bennett wrote.

Killed – Jeffrey Michael Luedecke (Henrico County, VA)

male

A 22-year-old Henrico County man’s 17-month fight to establish his innocence in the shooting death of his father came to an end Thursday in a flood of tears, relief and thanks.

“The court finds you not guilty,” Henrico Circuit Judge Gary A. Hicks concluded, setting in motion a frenzy of joy after a three-day trial and a long summary of the case that Hicks said established Michael A. Luedecke’s innocence of voluntary manslaughter in his father’s death in November 2013.

Luedecke’s younger brother, Jonathan, 19, a Marine, credited Michael with saving his life during an emotional appearance on the witness stand Wednesday, when he sobbed uncontrollably recalling how his father, Jeffrey, 51, fought to gain control of an assault rifle during an unprovoked attack on his two sons in the family home.

Michael Luedecke, who’d been beaten and choked moments before the attack on his brother, grabbed a pistol and shot his father in the head from about a yard away. It ended what family members said had been a lifetime of fear living in the shadow of an angry man who hoarded weapons, demanded attention and even threatened to kill neighborhood dog walkers.

Henrico police said they responded shortly after 8 p.m. to a call for service in the 8800 block of Midway Road, which is off Parham Road south of Patterson Avenue near Regency Square mall.

“Detectives’ investigation revealed Michael Andrew Luedecke shot his father after the two were involved in a verbal argument that escalated,” police said in a statement, declining additional information about what may have preceded the argument.

Police found Jeffrey Michael Luedecke, 51, inside the home, dead from a gunshot wound. A search warrant in the case was sealed, and police declined to say if Michael Luedecke acknowledged shooting his father or to provide details about where he was arrested.

Killed – Ronald Kirby (Alexandria, VA)

Ronald Kirby

A man who helped shape the region’s transportation policy for a quarter-century was fatally shot inside his Alexandria home Monday in a stunning incident that has police — and his many friends in politics and the media — searching for an explanation.

Officials said Tuesday that Ronald Kirby, 69, director of transportation planning at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and that the medical examiner had deemed the case a homicide.

He was last seen alive early Monday morning, but a relative who arrived at the home early in the afternoon found Kirby suffering from gunshot wounds.

In an interview, Kirby’s wife, Anne G. Haynes, 71, said she saw her husband Monday morning before leaving for a doctor’s appointment. She spoke to him by phone about 10 or 11 a.m., asking for directions to a place where she volunteered. It wasn’t until she came home about 3:30 p.m. and saw the police tape surrounding her home that she learned that her husband had been found dead by his son, 33-year-old Josef Kirby.

Alexandria police say a relative called them after finding Kirby unresponsive in his home at about 12:30 p.m. on Veteran’s Day. Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook told reporters at an afternoon briefing that Kirby was the victim of a homicide who was killed by “multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.”

Killed – Rodney White (Richmond, VA)

Rodney White3

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — Police are investigating a homicide on the city’s Southside early Sunday morning that investigators said happened in an alleyway.

According to Gene Lepley, with Richmond Police, officers responded to a call at 1:50 a.m. at the 2300 block of Gordon Ave, located in the Oak Grove neighborhood.

Police discovered Rodney S. White, 22, shot several times and lying in an alley that intersects with Gordon Avenue.

White was transported to VCU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Loved ones say Richmond’s recent murder victim was the victim of a hate crime. Police say 22-year-old Rodney White was gunned down last weekend in an alley on the 2300 block of Gordon Avenue, on Richmond’s south side.

Friday night, the LGBT community and Richmond Police joined family and friends for a candlelight vigil. Loved ones tell me White was dressed as a woman the night of the murder.

But police are not calling this a hate crime even if his loved ones are.

“To his friends he was also known as Amari,” said family friend, Danielle Davis.

Amari is his transgender name. He recently started embracing a new identity.

“I’m glad that the transgender, the gay community is out supporting us tonight,” said Davis.

Killed – Jeremy J. Meredith (Richmond, VA)

male

Richmond Police have released the identity of a man shot and killed on the Southside Sunday evening.

Police say Jeremy J. Meredith, 21, was shot and killed in the 2400 block of Yorktown Avenue around 10:00p.m.

Police say the call came in reporting disorderly conduct and multiple shots fired next to a food mart, where officers happened to be on an unrelated call. Police were on the scene in moments.

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Richmond Police arrested Darryl A. Greaves, 32, of Yorktown Avenue, in connection with a weekend homicide.

Greaves is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Police said additional indictments will be sought and added no suspects are being sought at this time.

The arrest comes after a man was killed in a South Richmond shooting. Officers were called to the 2500 block of Yorktown Avenue, off Jefferson Davis Highway, about 10:10 p.m. Sunday.

Police identified the shooting victim as Jeremy J. Meredith, 21, of Labrook Dr.

Upon arrival police found Meredith laying in the street with a gunshot wound. He was transported to VCU Medical Center, where he later died.

Witnesses said they heard nine to 10 gunshots ring out in rapid succession. Following the shots, police surrounded a house on Yorktown Avenue just down the street from the shooting, according to neighbors. Multiple witnesses saw officers handcuff and detain two men, who exited a home peacefully after some verbal coaxing by police.

Killed – Shane Whitworth (Virginia Beach, VA)

male

A 30-year-old man died after officers shot him in Witchduck Landing on Wednesday.

Around 6:15 p.m., police responded to a home in the 500 block of Bay Cove Quay after a woman reported her husband had locked himself in a bathroom and was threatening to harm himself, according to a news release.

When officers arrived, the woman and her 5-year-old left the house safely. Police said they heard Shane Whitworth say he had weapons in the house and was not coming out and heard a gun slide being racked, the release said.

Police surrounded the house.

When Whitworth left through a back door, he fired a handgun once then hid under a trampoline, police said. Eventually, officers saw him climb a ladder and jump over a fence. Police encountered Whitworth, who was still armed, and shot him, the release said.

The police department’s investigative division, the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Office of Internal Affairs are investigating the shooting.

Prosecutors have determined that two officers who shot and killed a 30-year-old gunman in October were justified in their use of force and will not face criminal charges, according to a letter sent Friday to city officials.

Virginia Beach police Officer Steven Brown and Naval Criminal Investigative Service Agent Suzanne Marsteller each fired once at Shane Whitworth after he pointed a gun at them during a showdown Oct. 30 in the backyard of his home and a neighbor’s home, according to the letter, addressed to City Manager Jim Spore and police Chief Jim Cervera from Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin Stolle. Whitworth died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Killed – James Bryant (Mount Vernon, VA)

male

A man was shot and killed by an officer at a homeless shelter just a short distance from the Fort Belvoir military base Wednesday night.

ABC7 has learned it started with a police officer under attack and officials say another officer had no choice but to fire his gun.

Fairfax County police say officers were called to the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter around 6 p.m. for the report of a fight. About half an hour later, neighbors across the street say shots rang out.

Neighbors say multiple ambulances arrived and they witnessed several people being taken to the hospital.

Police say as officers tried to break up the fight, one person in the group turned on one of the officers. That person was shot and killed.

“One of those individuals turned and actually assaulted one of our officers,” Ofc. Eddy Azcarate says. “In that altercation, an officer discharged his weapon and the individual that assaulted one of our officers has died.”

Prosecutors will not file charges against a Fairfax County police officer who fatally shot a homeless man during an altercation at a shelter near Fort Belvoir in October, police announced Tuesday.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond F. Morrogh cleared Officer Mohammed Oluwa, an 11-year veteran assigned to the Mount Vernon Police District, of any wrongdoing in the killing of 28-year-old James Bryant. The officer, who has been assigned administrative tasks since the shooting, will return to patrol duties, police said.

Update – Officer Involved Shooting
Mount Vernon Police District – Detectives have identified the man who died as James Bryant, 28, of no fixed address.

The continuing investigation has revealed that Bryant, a resident at the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter, began assaulting other residents at the shelter. The police were called and two officers arrived. They encountered Bryant who assaulted an officer and wrestled away his baton. During this altercation, Bryant assaulted the second officer with the baton. Officers employed multiple levels of non-deadly force to try to end the assault. These attempts to control Bryant failed to stop his violent actions. The victim officer, previously struck by the baton, discharged his service weapon to stop an additional assault by Bryant. The officers then rendered aid until medical personnel arrived.

The officer struck by the baton was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. He is 35 years old and an 11-year-veteran of the department. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Division in the Mount Vernon Police District. Both officers have been placed on routine administrative leave.

There were at least four other victims from the original fight at the shelter. Three of these victims were transported to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries. The other victims did not require transportation.

Killed – Jonathan Robertson (Pearisburg, VA)

male

Pearisburg, VA – State police have released more information about an officer-involved shooting in Pearisburg over the weekend.

State Police say Jonathan Robertson, 32, was the suspect in a robbery that happened early Friday morning in Narrows.

While they were serving warrants on Robertson Saturday afternoon in Pearisburg, they say he fired at officers. They shot back, killing him.

A passenger in Robertson’s car when the shootout took place has been taken into custody.

Two other men have been arrested and charged in connection with Friday’s robbery.

—————

Giles Co., VA- State Police have released the name of a suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday.

On Saturday a Virginia State Police special agent was assisting the Giles County Sheriff’s Office with an investigation into the robbery and shooting of a Giles County man that had occurred early Friday morning. During the course of that investigation, the special agent and a Giles County sheriff’s deputy were traveling along Fletchers Mountain Road when they encountered the main suspect in Friday’s incident, 32-year-old Jonathan V. Robertson of Narrows.

Robertson had stopped his Chevrolet S-10 pickup across the roadway forcing the law enforcement officers to stop. When the special agent and deputy identified themselves as law enforcement, Robertson displayed a weapon and began shooting at the law enforcement officers. The special agent and deputy returned fire.

Robertson’s passenger, a man from Giles County, bailed out of the pickup truck as Robertson fled from the scene. The passenger was not injured and was taken into custody by the Giles County Sheriff’s Office. He is currently being held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail on charges related to Friday’s robbery and shooting incident.

Robertson continued down Fletchers Mountain Road and crossed over a stinger-spike strip that had been deployed across the road by the sheriff’s office. Despite the flat tires from the spike strip, the pickup truck continued another 75 yards to Narrows Road where there was another exchange of gunfire between Robertson and sheriff’s deputies.

Robertson again fled the scene in his pickup until he ran off the road on Thomas Drive in the Town of Pearisburg. Robertson again fired at deputies and Town of Pearisburg Police, who returned fire.

Robertson was transported to Giles Memorial Hospital and was then flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly thereafter. His remains were taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.

No law enforcement personnel were injured at any of the shooting scenes.

In accordance with each agency’s policy, the personnel involved in the shootings from the Giles County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Pearisburg Police Department and Virginia State Police have been placed on administrative leave with pay.

The incident remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office’s Police Shooting Investigative Team, with the assistance of the Giles County Sheriff’s Office and Town of Pearisburg Police Department.

According to a news release from the State Police, the incident began in Narrows around 4:35 p.m. when a male — who was the subject of an ongoing investigation — confronted law enforcement officers with the sheriff’s office and state police. Shots were fired as a result of the confrontation.

GILES COUNTY – A special prosecutor ruled Monday that the use of deadly force against a Narrows man in Giles County in October was “justified and appropriate,” so no charges will be filed against the officers involved.

Jonathan V. Robertson, 32, was killed Oct. 26 in a shootout with officers from Virginia State Police, Giles County Sheriff’s Office and Pearisburg Police Department. Robertson was wanted on charges of malicious wounding and robbery stemming from an incident a day earlier.

“The officers at each of the three crime scenes and at each stage of this pursuit and apprehension possessed a reasonable belief that they or their fellow officers were in imminent danger of death or serious injury based on the shots fired and firearm brandished by Jonathan Robertson,” Salem City Commonwealth’s Attorney Thomas E. Bowers states in his finding.

Bowers was appointed to investigate the shooting after Giles County Prosecutor Robert Lilly Jr., a former assistant prosecutor for Pulaski County, disqualified himself.

Killed – Michelle Williams (Hampton, VA)

female

Hampton, Va. – A woman was shot and killed in an early-morning shooting in the 300 block of Greenbriar Avenue.

Police received a 911 call about the shooting at 12:05am.

When officers arrived they found the woman, identified as 29-year-old Michelle Williams, in front of a home. She had suffered gunshot wounds to the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This case is about betrayal, about the betrayal of one friend against the other … The individual who betrayed Michelle — who killed Michelle — is Kenard Collins,” said Artisha Gregg, senior assistant commonwealth’s attorney, in her opening statement.

During the first day of a homicide trial Tuesday, prosecutors painted a picture of two people whose longtime friendship ended at the barrel of a gun in 2013.

Kenard M. Collins, of the 1500 block of Big Bethel Road, was arrested and charged with one count each of murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, police spokeswoman Cpl. Mary Shackelford said in a news release. (Daily Press)
Collins, 30, is charged with murder in the Oct. 18, 2013, shooting death of Michelle Williams. Williams was found dead on Greenbriar Avenue with six gunshot wounds to her chest and head. She was 29.

Once thought to be an eyewitness to her murder by police, it only took a jury 45 minutes Wednesday to convict Kenard Collins of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to life plus three years in prison.
