Killed – Jose Mendoza (Berwyn, IL)

Jose Mendoza1

Three suburban men were ordered held today after they were charged with committing a botched New Year’s Eve robbery that ended in the death of a Berwyn man.

Eddie Garcia, Salvador Alvarado and Jonathan Ivory each face first-degree murder and attempted robbery charges for the shooting death of 20-year-old Jose Mendoza, Assistant State’s Attorney Brooke Shupe said Sunday.

Ivory, 24, of Westchester, picked up Alvarado and Garcia on Dec. 31, she said.

The three smoked marijuana and talked about doing a robbery, according to Shupe.

Ivory drove the trio to the 2100 block of South Oak Park Avenue, near the Millennium Cutz barbershop, and dropped Garcia off, she said.

Garcia, 21, of Alsip, waited in a back alley for Mendoza, Shupe said, and attempted to rob him when he walked up at about 9:40 p.m.

A struggle, ensued, and Garcia shot Mendoza once in the chest, she said. He got no cash from Mendoza.

Mendoza, of the 2600 block of South East Avenue in Berwyn, was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m. on Dec. 31, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Garcia fled to the getaway car after the shooting, but dropped his phone, the handgun’s clip and one of his shoes in the process, all of which were recovered by police, Shupe said.

Murder/Suicide – Dead – Michael Penrose (Parke County, IL)

male

DANVILLE — Investigations into the death of an area woman continue after her body was found in her home late Sunday evening.

The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department was called just before 9 p.m. Sunday to the home of Jamie L. Sternberger, 40, along Greenwood Cemetery Road.

Capt. Rod Kaag, chief investigator for the sheriff’s department, said Sternberger was found dead inside the residence with initial indications of gunshot wounds.

ANVILLE, Ill. (AP) – Authorities in east central Illinois say a man found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Parke County, Indiana, was a suspect in the murder of a 40-year-old Illinois woman.

The woman, Jamie L. Sternberger, was found fatally shot Sunday in her mobile home near Danville. Her vehicle was found Sunday in Indiana at an undisclosed spot where 43-year-old Michael Penrose is believed to have committed suicide.

Chief Deputy Bill Todd of the Parke County, Indiana, sheriff’s office says Penrose may have been living with Sternberger for about six months at her home outside of Danville where her body was found.

Capt. Rod Kaag of the Vermilion County sheriff’s department tells The (Champaign) News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1cla9tu ) investigators consider Penrose the only suspect in the murder.

However, Chief Deputy Bill Todd with the Parke County, Ind., Sheriff’s Office said his department is working through its official identification confirmation process, but they believe that it was the body of Michael Penrose, 43, that was found at 5:38 p.m. Sunday at an undisclosed location in Parke County, Ind.

Todd said they believe Mr. Penrose was the victim of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. He said they have linked Mr. Penrose to a rural address near Rockville, Ind., but believe he had been living temporarily with Ms. Sternberger for the last six months at her mobile home.

Killed – Jernale Richardson (Chicago, IL)

male

Jernale Richardson was found shot to death in the Austin neighborhood early Friday.

Richardson, 36, was found about 3:50 a.m. in the 5900 block of West Midway Park with gunshot wounds to the chest and head, authorities said.

Richardson, of the 5100 block of West Ohio Street, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Area North detectives are investigating.

An Austin neighborhood man has been charged with first-degree murder after prosecutors said he shot and killed the father of his girlfriend’s child.

Shaughnessy Simms Jr., 31, of the 5900 block of West Midway Park, was ordered held without bail Sunday by Cook County Judge James Brown.

Assistant State’s Attorney Kingsley Sawyers said Simms and his girlfriend began to argue Friday at Simms’ home because he’d been dating other women. The argument went on for a couple of hours, Sawyers said.

Eventually he said the girlfriend went to her room and got on the phone, speaking to Jermane Richardson, the father of her 7-year-old child.

Richardson showed up at the residence 45 minutes later and knocked on the door, the prosecutor said. Simm’s girlfriend came out of her room to speak to Richardson, who was at the bottom of a set of stairs.

A witness later saw Simms come out of his room with a “big gun,” Sawyers said, and he began to argue with Richardson as the girlfriend tried to intervene.

Eventually Richardson began to walk up the stairs toward Simms, Sawyers said, but Simms shot him once in the arm. Then, after Richardson fell to the ground in a seated position, the prosecutor said Simms stood over him and shot him two more times, once in the head.

Attempted Murder/Suicide – Wounded – Man (Westfield, IL)

male

WESTVILLE — A performance evaluation between a local chemical company president and a longtime employee turned deadly the day after Christmas.

About 2:30 p.m. Thursday, a call of shots fired came into Vermilion County’s 911 center from DynaChem Inc., a chemical company south of Westville, said Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn.

DynaChem’s president had been doing a performance evaluation of an employee who had worked at the facility for more than 20 years, Hartshorn said, when the worker pulled a handgun from a briefcase. He shot his boss twice — once in the head and once in the hip — and then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life, according to Hartshorn.

Keith Rife, president and CEO of DynaChem, according to the company’s website, did not suffer life-threatening injuries, Hartshorn said. Rife was rushed by ambulance to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

The employee, chemist Wayne Woodson of Georgetown, was pronounced dead at the scene. Woodson is listed on DynaChem’s website as its director of new technologies.

“All we know is something went wrong in the performance evaluation,” Hartshorn said.

Hartshorn said Rife managed to get out of the office on his own and into a hallway where other employees helped him and called 911.

Killed – Pregnant Teen – Eva Casara (Chicago, IL)

Eva Casara2

CHICAGO – A third suspect in the Christmas Day murder of a pregnant Chicago teen has been charged after surrendering Monday, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Darius D. Marshall, 19, of Dolton, Ill., is due in court Thursday to face charges of murder and attempted armed robbery. His attorney, Stuart Goldberg, told the Sun-Times his client will plead not guilty.

Marshall turned himself in after his brothers, a 16-year-old boy and 21-year-old Diante Coakley, were charged with the murder of Eva Casara, 17, over the weekend. Prosecutors say Casara was shot in the back of the head during a botched robbery in which she was allegedly participating Dec. 25. She was reportedly 26 weeks pregnant with the child of the 16-year-old suspect, who was her boyfriend.

Prosecutors have said Casara plotted with her boyfriend, his brother Coakley and another unnamed brother to commit a robbery, reports the Sun-Times. They believe Coakley fired the fatal shot, though they say Casara wasn’t the intended target.

Casara was shot in the back of the head on Wednesday. Her body was found in a residential area in Dolton around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, but police believe the shooting occurred somewhere else. Casara was taken to the hospital, where doctors saved her baby but she died.

“We believe we found the actual location where this young lady was shot at,” Dolton Police Chief John Franklin said. “It was suspected (Wednesday) night that she was not actually shot at 1102, that she was placed there. And members of the Crime Task Force have found some shell casings in the 15200 South Dorchester where we believe the actual shooting did occur there.”

Killed – Jarrett D. Mosby (Madison, IL)

Jarrett D. Mosby

MADISON, Ill. – A 21-year-old Mizzou student was shot to death Monday while sitting inside a vehicle.

Police were called to the intersection of W. 2nd and Bissell streets at 12:44 a.m. for a report of a traffic accident. When officers arrived, they found Jarrett D. Mosby in the front seat with multiple gunshot wounds.

Mosby was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family says he was a senior at University of Missouri, studying business, and had just been accepted into the Honor Society. Mosby has a 6-year-old son, and he was home for the holidays.

MADISON • The Madison County state’s attorney on Monday filed first-degree murder charges against an East St. Louis man for killing a Mizzou college student last week in an apparent drug deal.

Deneshion M. Swope, 24, is accused of killing Jarrett D. Mosby on Dec. 23 as they sat in a car in Madison. Police say Swope tried to buy marijuana from Mosby. Swope and Mosby were acquaintances and agreed to meet in the early morning hours of Dec. 23.

Mosby, 21, of Collinsville, picked up Swope in his car and the two men got into an argument, according to the Madison County state’s attorney. The argument escalated near 10th and State streets, where Swope allegedly shot Mosby seven times in the upper body, killing him, authorities say.

Police in Madison found Mosby’s body in the front seat of a Pontiac at West Second and Bissell streets. Investigators say they think Swope moved the car from where Mosby had been shot.

Killed – Male Teen – Javon Butler (Galesburg, IL)

Javon Butler

GALESBURG, Ill. — Galesburg police say they have issued arrest warrants for two men in connection with the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy.

The (Galesburg) Register-Mail reports that police are seeking two 18-year-old men — one on first-degree murder and firearms charges and the other for possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police say officers responding to a 911 call around 8:50 p.m. Sunday found Javon Butler in the backyard of a home. The Knox County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

A Galesburg teenager will spend at least several decades in prison after pleading guilty to the shooting death of a Galesburg teen over a year ago. But, it’s not the sentence that the family of the victim was likely hoping for.

19-year-old Brandon Kenney pleaded guilty in Knox County Circuit Court yesterday to charges of Second Degree Murder, and was sentenced as part of a negotiation to 40 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. However, Kenney will be able to get day-for-day credit, which means that he’ll serve about 20 years in prison for the crime, once a prison term for an unrelated Knox County robbery case expires.

Kenney was arrested in January of last year, weeks after the shooting death just before Christmas of 2013 of 15-year-old Javon Butler. Kenney shot Butler during an altercation in the 600 block of Monmouth Boulevard.

Officials say had the first degree murder charges still been in effect, Kenney could have served a minimum of 45 years in prison had he pleaded guilty or was convicted.

Killed – Leroy Griffin (Chicago, IL)

male

Leroy Griffin was fatally shot Saturday night in the Chatham neighborhood.

Griffin, 18, was in the 7900 block of South Lafayette Avenue when an SUV approached about 7 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. Several people got out of the SUV and opened fire — striking Griffin in the head.

Griffin, of the 7500 block of South Langley Avenue, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 7:20 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A third man was charged Sunday in the December 2013 slaying of Leroy Griffin, who was beaten then shot in the head by rival gang members outside a Chatham gas station.

Steven Blanchard, 26, who was charged with first-degree murder, is accused of being the triggerman who killed Griffin. He was ordered held without bail during a brief appearance before Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil.

Blanchard was in an SUV with six other people on Dec. 21, 2013, when someone spotted Griffin, 19, and a friend outside a gas station near the 7900 block of South Lafayette Avenue, according to authorities.

The group spilled out of the SUV and started beating Griffin, Assistant State’s Attorney LaShunda Cooperwood said. Meanwhile, Blanchard chased after Griffin’s friend, who sprinted away from the gas station. Blanchard fired shots at the friend but headed back to the gas station when he didn’t hit him.

As Blanchard walked back to join his group, he saw Griffin running toward him, Cooperwood said. He took aim and fired a single shot, striking Griffin in the head.

Blanchard, of the 1500 block of East 72nd Street, then rejoined the group, which fled in the SUV, authorities said.

Griffin, of the 7500 block of South Langley Avenue, was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Lamont Jackson, 24, and Louis Smith, 25, also were charged with murder in Griffin’s death in December 2014.

Parts of the attack were captured by surveillance cameras, though the shooting itself was not, prosecutors said.

Blanchard confessed to shooting Griffin when he was questioned, prosecutors said.

Killed – Police Officer – Cuauhtemoc Estrada (Bellwood, IL)

Cuauhtemoc Estrada1

Officials say they have multiple suspects in custody after a Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot and killed Friday night trying to stop an armed robbery in suburban Chicago.

Police and family say Cuauhtemoc Estrada was at a family holiday party at a Bellwood, Ill. VFW when he reportedly saw two men in ski masks trying to rob his daughter and her boyfriend at gunpoint in the parking lot around 7:30 p.m., the Tribune reports.

Estrada, 50, reached for his gun and was shot in the chest. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“He was an exceptional investigator, but an even better man who loved his family, his friends and his country,” Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said in a statement according to the Sun-Times. “Quite simply, he made this world a better place and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.”

Charges were filed early Monday against two suspects. Brandon Jackson and Gage Thornton, both 22, now face numerous counts, including first-degree murder charges. Police say they have good evidence against the two Bellwood men, but authorities would not share many details Monday. Prosecutors say Jackson was wearing a red hoodie and a ski mask at the time of the attack. Thornton allegedly wore a red jacket with blue sleeves.

Bellwood police say footprints in the snow led officers back to Jackson’s house. When the men were arrested — Jackson, who works at a moving company, was found with a black ski mask in the back pocket of his jeans. Police also found the distinctive jacket that Thornton, who works at a car wash, was allegedly wearing during the robbery. Detectives also say they recovered an empty gun box with cartridges missing.

Deacon Cooper was found in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds about 4:45 a.m. in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue, according to police news affairs.

Cooper worked at the Aries Bus Co., and was on his way to work, following his usual routine, according to his friend, Steve Herron.

He pulled up to pick up Herron, who also is Cooper’s co-worker.
That’s when Cooper was ambushed by a group of men and gunned down inside his car.

Herron told CBS 2’s Courtney Gousman that he was just about to walk out of his home and jump into the car when he heard gunshots.

In the most recent shooting, 74-year-old Willy Cooper, a deacon at St. Phillip Neri Church, was found fatally shot inside a vehicle in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue, CBS Chicago reports.

Tattooed across the throat of Mark A. Hall, one of two men accused of killing a deacon and a blues musician during botched robberies last December, is the phrase: “God 4 Gives I Don’t.”

On Sunday, it was Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois’ turn to be unforgiving. With a dismissive nod, Bourgeois ordered Hall held without bail as he awaits trial. His co-defendant, Devin Aldridge, was ordered held without bond on Saturday.

Hall and Aldridge, both 23, were charged with two counts each of first-degree murder for the early morning killings of deacon Willie Cooper and musician Eric “Guitar” Davis on Dec. 19, 2013, in the South Shore neighborhood, authorities said.

Cooper and Davis were shot to death within 40 minutes just blocks from each other, Assistant State’s Attorney Luz Toledo said in court.

In both cases, the men were in their vehicles waiting to pick up a friend, prosecutors said. Each tried to speed away to avoid getting robbed by Aldridge and Hall, prosecutors alleged. Instead, they both died in a hail of 9 mm bullets that were traced to the same handgun, according to prosecutors.

Cooper, 74, was shot at 4:44 a.m. in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue. Davis, 41, was sitting in his vehicle in the 6700 block of South East End about 5:20 a.m. when he was shot, police said.

Davis, of the 14200 block of South Eggleston in Riverdale, and Cooper, of the 6800 block of South Crandon, were dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Willie Cooper, 74, a retired CTA driver and deacon, was shot to death around 4:45 a.m., after he pulled up in the 7000 Block of South East End Avenue and was waiting to give a friend a ride to work.

Hall walked up to the drivers’ side. Aldridge walked up to the passengers’ side, and the two demanded money, Assistant State’s Attorney Luz Toledo said in court.

When Cooper began to drive away, Hall shot at him at least 10 times, striking him multiple times and killing him. The victims fled after Cooper crashed into a nearby fence and slumped over the wheel, Toledo said. Cooper suffered wounds to the shoulder, bicep, ear and elbow.

Around 5:20 a.m., in the 6700 block of South East End Avenue, the men approached Eric “Guitar” Davis, 43, who was also sitting in his parked car waiting to pick up a friend, when the men approached him on the driver’s side and demanded money.

When he tried to drive away, he was shot at multiple times and struck in the back, neck and his right inner palm, Toledo said in court. Davis was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago.

Double Shooting – Wounded – Woman (Ivesdale, IL)

female

ATWOOD – A man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a woman who tried to stop him was accidentally shot in the hand Tuesday afternoon, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Terry Rexroad, 45, died after shooting himself at his residence in northern Douglas County near the Champaign County line, according to Peter Buckley, the sheriff’s office’s chief deputy. The incident took place about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at 95E County Road 1550N, a location between Atwood and the Champaign County town of Ivesdale.

Police believe Rexroad’s wife, Theresa Rexroad, 41, found her husband despondent and tried to call 911, Buckley said. Then, Terry Rexroad tried to take her phone from her while holding a handgun, which fired accidentally and hit the woman in the hand, he said. Theresa Rexroad then left the home and called authorities, who found Terry Rexroad dead when they arrived, Buckley said.

Theresa Rexroad was treated for her injury at Kirby Hospital in Monticello and later released, according to the sheriff’s office.

IVESDALE — Police say a man accidentally shot his wife, then turned the gun on himself. It happened at 95 East 1550 North in Douglas County.

Investigators say 45-year old Terry Rexroad was threatening to kill himself and his wife, Theresa, pulled out her phone to call 911. As she was doing that, he struggled to take it from her with a gun in his hand. It went off and a bullet hit her finger.

Police say Theresa ran out and drove about a mile away from the home and called police. She stressed to the dispatcher that her son was on a school bus and would be home any minute. The bus was stopped nearby and turned around.

Killed – Kevin Ross (Evanston, IL)

Kevin Ross

Left: Azim Hakeem; Right: Mobeen Hakeem

Mobeen Hakeem, 34, and Azim Hakeem, 38, were discovered around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Evanston Pipe and Tobacco shop in the 900 block of Davis Street in the north suburb, according to relatives and authorities.

The mother of the two men drove to the store to check on them shortly after 8 p.m. where she found the “open” sign still illuminated and the doors padlocked. The Sun-Times reports after the woman called authorities who later snapped the lock to enter the store, and found the men in the basement with “at least” one gunshot wound each.

December 20, 2013 (EVANSTON, Ill.) — Police in Evanston say a suspected bank robber who was shot and killed on Monday was responsible for the murder of two brothers back in July.

Police say a search conducted in a basement storage locker in Ross’s Evanston condominium turned up documents belonging to Azim Hakeem, 38, and his brother, Mobeen Hakeem, 34,. The brothers were were shot to death July 30 at their store, Evanston Pipe and Tobacco. Their bodies were found in the basement.

It was a crime that caused unease in the Evanston community and stymied police who assigned two officers full time to try to solve it. The murders of brothers Mobeen and Aziz Hakeem inside the tobacco shop they ran has gone unsolved since July.

But police got a break in the case after following up on bank robbery suspect 29-year-old Kevin Ross, who was shot by officers after a confrontation Monday. They searched a storage locker in his apartment.

“Police searched that storage locker and located several pieces that linked him to the scene of the double murder, and also specifically, linked him to the murder itself,” said Cmdr. Jay Parrott, Evanston Police Dept.

Among the items they found in the storage locker were the victim’s I.D.s, a matching .22-caliber shell casing consistent with the weapon used to shoot the brothers multiple times, and a receipt from cigar shop from several months earlier, indicating he had been in the store previously.

Hakeem’s family however believes police take pinning the crime on the wrong suspect. They have been anxiously hoping for an arrest in the case, but they doubt Ross was the killer.

“We’re just really frustrated because there’s this consistent pattern of misinformation, lack of transparency and it just raises more and more doubts,” said Farheen Hakeem, victim’s sister.

Kevin Ross was shot and killed on Monday, after allegedly robbing a Chase Bank branch in the 900 block of Grove Street. When police approached him after the robbery, and he refused to drop his weapon, officers shot and killed Ross.

Double Shooting – Killed – Eric M. Anderson (Chicago, IL)

Eric M. Anderson

After allegedly harassing his ex-girlfriend for weeks, a man threatened the woman and her mother with a gun in a Northwest suburban home, shot a police officer who tried to intervene and was then fatally shot by police, authorities said.

A firefighter who by chance was eating dinner near the scene in Arlington Heights on Thursday night helped save the life of Officer Michael McEvoy, police said.

After the 52-year-old officer was dragged from the home with a wound to the chin area, fire Deputy Chief Ken Koeppen, who had come outside after seeing emergency lights, helped stanch the bleeding.

McEvoy, a 24-year veteran, was listed in critical but stable condition at a hospital Friday and was expected to recover, authorities said.

“Ken Koeppen was a hero in all this,” said Arlington Heights police Cmdr. Andrew Whowell. “It was an act of God that he was (there).”

The gunfire capped a span of weeks in which the alleged gunman, Eric M. Anderson, 41, of Niles, persistently harassed a woman who had broken up with him in late November, according to court records. Less than a week before he died, Anderson was charged with sending harassing emails to his 39-year-old ex-girlfriend even though police had warned him not to contact her, court records show. He was released on bond after his arrest Sunday, police said.

A judge signed an emergency order of protection against him Monday, ordering Anderson to stay away from his ex-girlfriend.

“I feel that he may still try and contact me after this,” the woman wrote in her petition for the order. “I just want him to leave me alone.”

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, McEvoy and three other officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at a town house in the 1900 block of Windham Court. Anderson’s ex-girlfriend was at the home visiting her mother, who had called police and then escaped unhurt, Whowell said.

McEvoy was the first officer to enter the house and was shot once, Whowell said. A fellow officer dragged him from the house, police said.

About two hours into the standoff, Anderson and the woman left the house for an attached garage, Whowell said, and officers confronted him. The woman ran away as Anderson pointed his gun at officers, who shot him multiple times, Whowell said.

Anderson was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights and was pronounced dead at 11:02 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A 68-year-old man was shot to death during an attempted robbery in the Logan Square neighborhood early Thursday.

Cayetano Sandoval was shot in the chest multiple times in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue about 1:50 a.m., authorities said.

Witnesses in a nearby bar told officers that two people tried to rob Sandoval, police said. One of the robbers knocked him to the ground, then the other shot him multiple times.

Both robbers ran off after the shooting, police said.

Sandoval, of the 1600 block of West Ontario Street, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police said he was shot as many as five times.

An alleged gang member has been charged with murder after prosecutors said him and a friend fatally shot a 68-year-old man during a 2013 robbery in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Joshua Johnson, 23, was nabbed at the Rolling Meadows courthouse on Friday when he appeared for an unrelated case.

He now also faces first-degree murder charges for the Dec. 12, 2013, shooting death of Cayetano Sandoval in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue.

Prosecutors said Sandoval had just returned home from his job at a bakery when Johnson and another man approached him after he parked his van about 2 a.m.

Johnson demanded Sandoval give them money and began hitting him. Johnson held Sandoval down and the other man took out a gun and opened fire, prosecutors said.

Sandoval was shot five times and died at the scene, authorities said.

Mario Ortega, 20; and Joshua Johnson, 23, approached Sandoval after he parked his car in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue around 2 a.m. on Dec. 12, 2013, coming home from his job at a bakery, according to Cook County court documents. Prosecutors said Ortega, also known as “King Krazy,” and Johnson are both Latin Kings.
