WINSTON-SALEM — Police are investigating the death of a Winston-Salem man.
Officers found Dontae Renard Ross, 21, of 822 Woodcote St., lying on the ground behind a house in the 2500 block of La Deara Crest Lane just before 1 a.m. Thursday.
Ross had a gunshot wound to his buttocks, according to a news release. Ross could not tell police who shot him.
He was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and underwent surgery. He died from his injuries.
On Friday, Judge David Hall of Forsyth Superior Court kept reminding Michael Damon Hines of two things – that he’s alive and that his actions in 2013 led to the death of another man, Dontae Renard Ross, an aspiring rapper and musician.
Both men have sons around the same age, but while Hines’ son can still see his father, Ross’ son can’t, Hall said.
“You may not have pulled the trigger but you were part of the group mentality that led to this man’s death,” he told Hines.
Hines, 23, of Kernersville, pleaded guilty Friday to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in connection to Ross’ death on Sept. 12, 2013. Hall sentenced Hines to almost two years to three years and four months in prison.
Joseph Anthony Pichardo Jr., 23, of Glenmont Road, is charged with murder in Ross’ death. Devonte Leon Hall, 23, of Promise Lane Court, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon. The cases of both men are pending.
Ross was shot around 1 a.m. Sept. 12, 2013 as he and two of his friends were walking along La Deara Crest Lane, Assistant District Attorney Sharleen Sullivan said.
