Double Shooting – Wounded – Man (Newport News, VA)

male

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. at the Magnuson Hotel in the 1000 block of Omni Blvd., according to the release. Officers working nearby responded after hearing gunshots in the parking lot. They found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Medical units pronounced Victor RasheemRussell, 23, of Hampton, dead at the scene, the release said.

The other victim, a 23-year-old Hampton man, was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

NEWPORT NEWS — A judge dismissed all charges Friday against a Newport News man accused of killing one man and shooting another after a party last year.

Matthew Allen was charged in the Oct. 12, 2013 shooting of 23-year-old Victor Rasheem Russell, of Hampton. Allen’s second-degree murder, malicious wounding and firearms charges were all dismissed.

The charges were dismissed after witnesses testified that Russell and a friend were the aggressors and that Allen, 24, was being beaten up when the fatal shot was fired.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2 a.m. immediately following a homecoming after-party for Hampton University alumni at the Magnuson Hotel on Omni Boulevard. Russell was fatally wounded in the chest. The event was not sponsored by the university.

The charges were dismissed following a three-hour probable cause hearing. The purpose of the hearing was for Newport News General District Judge Gary A. Mills to decide whether there was enough evidence to move the case up to a Newport News Circuit Court grand jury to review.

Killed – Kevin Heath Frazier (Carroll County, VA)

male

As part of a plea bargain Thursday in Carroll County Circuit Court, Whitney Lee Isom pleaded guilty to an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter in the October 9, 2013 shooting death of Kevin Heath Frazier.

Isom turned herself in to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 14, 2013 after she was charged by a direct indictment five days earlier for second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Under Thursday’s plea agreement, Isom will face a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of $2,500. Judge Brett Geisler set a pre-sentencing hearing in the case for January 7, 2015.

On October 9, 2013, at 8:55 p.m., deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to what was called in as an accidental shooting at 70 Rippey Hollow Road in Pipers Gap. Responding deputies found Frazier, 29, dead from a gunshot wound.

Investigators from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and Special Agents of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations worked the crime scene. A 9 mm handgun was recovered from the scene.

Killed – Torrey Smith (Chesapeake, VA)

Torrey Smith

A 29-year-old man was found shot to death in the 2800 block of Parkside Drive early this morning.

Chesapeake police officers were called to the location around 5:50 a.m. and found Torrey Smith of Norfolk with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Update: According to police, Laquan Wright was taken into custody at 2:00pm Friday in Charlotte, NC by the US Marshals without incident. Members of the Chesapeake Police and Sheriff’s Office Apprehension Office conducted an investigation which led them to the Charlotte area. Wright is being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail awaiting extradition.

Update: A 22-year-old man is now wanted for first-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of Torrey Smith.

Laquan Wright returned home from a friend’s birthday party last October to find the birthday boy in his South Norfolk apartment, according to court testimony.

But it wasn’t where Wright found 29-year-old Torrey Smith that prompted him to eventually shoot and kill his friend, prosecutors said. It was who Smith was with: Wright’s mother.

Wright, a 22-year-old paraplegic who uses a wheelchair, was convicted Monday in Circuit Court of first-degree murder and use of a handgun during the commission of a felony. A jury recommended a sentence of life imprisonment plus three years and a fine of $75,000, Commonwealth’s Attorney Nancy Parr said.

Police are looking for Laquan Wright of the 2800 block of Parkside Drive.

Prosecutors said the party ended about 4:30 a.m. Oct. 6, prompting Wright and two other people to grab some food at McDonald’s. The group eventually headed to Wright’s apartment in the 2800 block of Parkside Drive.

Killed – Toren Waller (Richmond, VA)

male

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — Richmond police are conducting a homicide investigating after a man was found shot dead at a South Richmond apartment complex.

Police said an adult male, 23-year-old Toren Waller, was found dead Saturday from several shots, along the 500 block of Harrow Road, in the St. John’s Woods community shortly before midnight.

A Richmond man faces life plus five years in prison for being convicted of killing a man at the St. John’s Wood apartment complex by shooting him nine times.

A Richmond Circuit Court jury deliberated about five hours before convicting Marichel “Outlaw” Clayburn of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony for the Oct. 6 death of Toren Waller, 23, of the 5300 block of Glenside Drive in Henrico County. The panel then recommended Friday that Clayburn spend life in prison for the murder conviction and the mandatory five years for the firearm charge.

Killed – William Alexander Apps (Charleston, VA)

William Alexander Apps

According to police, Apps was last seen around Spring Street and the Ion area of Mount Pleasant Thursday evening October 3 about 5 p.m. His body was found around 8:30 pm Monday.

The man accused of killing William Alex Apps after arranging to buy his pickup off Craigslist drove to Beaufort in the stolen truck to party with friends after dumping the body, using the victim’s debit card to finance his road trip, authorities said.

Jquan Marqel Scott, 19, of James Island bought food from Taco Bell and Wendy’s, some sneakers and gas while Apps’ worried family tried in vain to reach the 25-year-old Charleston man, who disappeared Thursday, Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said.

Scott was still driving Apps’ stolen truck when investigators caught up with him Sunday, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said. Scott offered a host of explanations before finally confessing that he had shot Apps in the head and left him for dead in a stand of woods in Mount Pleasant, Cannon said.

Scott led investigators from the two counties to Apps’ body Monday, just hours after the local sheriff’s office issued a missing person alert, Cannon said.

Scott, of Greenhill Road, is charged with murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection with Apps’ death. His bail was set at $150,000 on the robbery and weapons charges Tuesday night, with no bail set on the murder and kidnapping charges.

A second suspect, 20-year-old Isaac R. Williams of Rutledge Avenue in Charleston, is also charged with kidnapping and murder and is being held in the Charleston County jail awaiting a circuit judge to set bail.

Apps, a College of Charleston student who grew up in Beaufort, agreed to meet the two men at a Hardee’s restaurant on Spring Street about 4 p.m. Thursday to sell them a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck he had advertised on the online classifieds site, Cannon said.

Apps’ mother showed up as well with the title to the truck, but he sent her home after the deal didn’t go through, opting to give the men a test drive by himself, Cannon said. While they were crossing the Ravenel Bridge into Mount Pleasant, Scott allegedly shot Apps in the head while Apps was sitting in the passenger seat. They dumped his body in woods near a power substation off Magrath Darby Boulevard, Cannon said.

Killed – Donte Jordan Henry-Davison (Norfolk, VA)

male

Police have identified a man who died Monday morning in the 3500 block of Seay Ave. and have charged two men in the death.

Officers who were called to the location about 3:45 a.m. found Donte Jordan Henry-Davison, 20, with what appeared to be a gunshot wound, according to an email from police spokesman Chris Amos. Henry-Davison, of the 2800 block of Grandy Ave., was pronounced dead at the scene.

A General District judge earlier this week dismissed the case against one of two men who had been charged in the Sept. 30 shooting death of Donte Jordan Henry-Davison, 20.

Henry-Davison was found and pronounced dead in the 3500 block of Seay Ave., according to an earlier news release.

The charges against Charles Pope were dismissed at a preliminary hearing Monday after Judge S. Clark Daugherty determined there was not enough probable cause to send the case to a grand jury.

The second man charged in the case – Nevlyn Williams – is scheduled for trial on May 1 on a charge of second-degree murder.

Amanda Howie with the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office told WAVY.com charges against Nevlyn Williams of second degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of cocaine were withdrawn Wednesday morning.

“It should have been obvious from day one that the facts in this matter presented nothing more than a textbook case of self-defense,” Williams’ attorney S.W. Dawson told WAVY.com. “This Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office should be ashamed of the way it treated this young man and Mr. Williams expects – and deserves – a full and sincere apology.”

Killed – Male Teen – Gerard Gomez (Vienna, VA)

Gerard Gomez1

A 16-year-old was found fatally shot early Sunday outside a hotel in the Vienna area, Fairfax County police said.

Gerard Gomez, of the Mount Vernon area, was found about 2 a.m. on a sidewalk next to the Residence Inn Tysons Corner on Westwood Center Drive, police said. He had injuries to the upper body. Officers tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gerard Gomez was angry that a man had displayed a gun during an argument with a friend of Gomez’s at a party last year, so, according to a Fairfax County prosecutor, the teen walked up to the man and asked a question that would lead to his death: “Are you going to use that strap?”

Jose Blanco-Calzadilla, 24, of Mount Vernon took a few steps back and pulled out the handgun. He leveled the gun and fired a single bullet through the 16-year-old’s chest. Gomez fell facedown and died seconds later, the prosecutor said.

Killed – Latasha M. Kolk (Chesapeake, VA)

female

Police today said a woman found shot to death inside an apartment Sunday was shot by her boyfriend.

About 3 p.m., officers were called to the 2500 block of Gilmerton Road for a report of shots fired, according to a police news release. Latasha M. Kolk, 37, was found dead inside the apartment.

An argument escalated, said Officer Kelly O’Sullivan, a police spokeswoman. Police are investigating whether the boyfriend was defending himself.

The boyfriend, whose name has not been released, called police after the shooting, O’Sullivan said.

Prosecutors will not pursue criminal charges against a Chesapeake man who fatally shot his girlfriend last September in their Deep Creek apartment.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Nancy Parr said she has reviewed Detective James Thomas’ investigative notes as well as photographs of the scene and the autopsy report. She said she also visited the apartment in the 2500 block of Gilmerton Road the day of the Sept. 8 shooting.

“It is my opinion that Ricky Calhoun reasonably feared for his life … and was justified in using deadly force to protect himself,” Parr wrote in a letter to police Chief Kelvin Wright.

Officer Kelly O’Sullivan, a police spokeswoman, said Calhoun and Latasha M. Kolk, both 37, had been arguing. Parr added that Kolk directed overt threats and other unspecified “dangerous actions” toward Calhoun before the shooting.

Killed – John Geer (Springfield, VA)

John Geer

Police have released the name of the man killed during a barricade situation in Springfield, Va. Thursday.

Fairfax County Police were dispatched to the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court around 2:30 p.m. for a domestic disturbance and a possibly armed individual.

The man, identified as 46-year-old John Geer, negotiated with police for about 40 minutes before a patrol officer fired a single shot into the home and struck Geer.

Geer then barricaded himself inside the home.

In order to help him, the home’s front door was knocked in by a police tanker, and SWAT team members made their way inside at approximately 5 p.m. Officials later confirmed the gunshot fired by police earlier in the afternoon had killed the suspect.

John B. Geer stood with his hands on top of the storm door of his Springfield, Va., townhouse and calmly said to four Fairfax County police officers with guns pointed at him: “I don’t want anybody to get shot . . . . And I don’t wanna get shot, ’cause I don’t want to die today.”

But as one officer tried to ease Geer through the standoff, another officer, Adam D. Torres, shot and killed Geer from 17 feet away, telling investigators that he saw Geer move his hands to his waist and thought he might be reaching for a weapon, according to newly released documents from the county.

The other three officers, and a lieutenant watching from a distance, said they saw no such thing, the documents show.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WJLA) – The family of a Springfield man shot by police during a standoff last year has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Fairfax County Police Department.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Fairfax County Circuit Court, asks for $12 million for the wrongful death of John Geer, as well as $350,000 in punitive damages against the officers involved.

Officer Rodney Barnes told investigators, “When the shot happened, his hands were up. I’m not here to throw [Torres] under the bus or anything like that, but I didn’t see what he saw.”

Killed – Douglas Allen Whitt (Russell County, VA)

male

CASTLEWOOD, Va. — A three-week investigation by local and state authorities has determined a Russell County woman was justified in shooting her estranged husband to death following a car crash last month.

Douglas Allen Witt, 53, was shot after ramming his one-ton pickup truck into a Ford Escape occupied by his wife, Tamara, and a teenage daughter and continued to push the car until both vehicles went over an embankment on Route 671/Copper Creek Road near Castlewood on Aug. 20 just after 7 a.m., Commonwealth’s Attorney Brian Patton said in a report released Thursday.

Witt exited his truck following the crash and “continued aggressively” toward his wife and daughter when his wife discharged her firearm at him and fatally wounded him out of “apparent fear for her and her daughter’s life,” Patton said in his statement.

The investigation, conducted by Patton’s office, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police, concluded that the homicide was justified and that Tamara Witt would not be charged in the incident, the report said.
